S. Howard. Ladd & Tllton Bank; The Oregonlan, or to V. R. Manning:, secretary of the Associated Charities, 411 Commercial block. Donations of clothing: and supplies should be sent to 411 Commercial block. On the fourth day after the campaign for the Christmas relief fund of the As sociated Charities was opened, the total cash donations yesterday were $585.67 and donations of clothing and grocery supplies were coming In In enormous quantities. A new feature In the campaign this year Is the interest shown by the churches and Sunday schools. Special collections have been taken up at re cent meetings of several of the Sunday schools and have been sent to the Christmas fund of the Associated Chari ties. , . Among the contributions received yesterday of this nature was a dona tion from the St. Johns Christian Church and the Fremont United Breth ren Church. The Third Baptist Church, the Rodney-Avenue Baptist Church and the- Forbes Presbyterian Church held a joint meeting recently and the collec tion taken at that time was turned over yesterday to the Christmas fund. Five Barrels of Flour Given. Among the donations of foodstuffs sent tn yesterday the largest was a gift of tive barrels of flour from T. J. Nea lond, of 835 Sixteenth street. Mrs. H. R. Albee sent In a gift of clothing, and food and groceries were given by F. H. Pu.ge, Mrs. C. G. Thayer and the Termi nal Grocery Company. Thus far the special cases in need of relief that have been announced from 'time to time in the campaign have been taken in hand promptly and given the kindest assistance by generous friends and supporters of the work of the Associated Charities. "The responses that are coming in already," says V. R. Manning, secretary of the Charities, "seem to Indicate that Portland's warm-hearted citizens are going to give us even more strong co operation than in the previous years of the work, to carry out successfully our aim of making the Christmas cheer run through the year for the destitute and dependent families in the city. In view of the many heavy demands that are being made on their generosity at this time the response is most promising Among the cases of need that were brought to the attention of the Chari ties yesterday, a few of the typical ones are the following: Case IS Sick Woman Has No Home. A man accompanied by a 3-year-old child appealed to the Charities to help him find means of caring for his wife. She has been desperately ill and was to be released yesterday from the hospi tal convalescent after a serious oper ation. The man is out of work and pen niless and could arrange for not even a room to which to take his wife while she is still weak and ill. Case 16 Danghtcr Support Mother, A 16-year-old girl, working for J6 a week,.nuBt stnpaci.fler widowed mother and little brother 6 years old. Nearly all of the money she can make is taken up to pay the rent. The mother is un able to work and the family is gradu ally coming into worse and worse straits. The child is barefooted and the mother was not able to secure enough money even to get him a pair of shoes. Case 17 Four Orpfcana Destitute. A young man 20 years old and his sister, 18, are trying hard to earn enough to keep a roof over themselves and their younger brother and sister. For a time they were able to earn enough to support the family and then both of them at the same time lost their positions. They have been out of work for several weeks and are now in danger of being obliged to leave the house where they have been living be cause of inability to pay the rent. It seems as though the little family may be broken up in a short-time unless as sistance can be brought to the strug gling young man and woman. ' Case. 18 Lost a Leg) Seeks Work. A young man. 24 years Old, lost his leg in an accident a year ago and is getting about on a wooden limb. He has been selling papers in an effort to make his living, but cannot earn enough in that way to pay for his board and room. He is now hcmelesv on the streets. He is strong and eager to work if soma job can be secured that he can handle in his present crippled condition. TEACHERS' PAY COMPARED Hood River County Gives Best Sal aries of Any County to Mien .
