OPENING OP ANNUAL- CORN DIS
PLAY OF" OW. It. A N. AI SPICIOI'S.
Parade of 100 Business) Men Feature.
Rapid GrOTrth of Acreaee Planted
Noted Entries Now are 172.
"WALLA WALLA, Wash., Nov. 26.
(Special.) The O.-W. R, &.. N. Co.'s
second annual corn show was opened
here yesterday under auspicious cir
cumstances. Following a Commercial
Club luncheon, 100 business men pa
raded the streets, each man carrying
an ear of corn. The procession was
headed by the Blks' fife and drum
corps and proceeded to the Denny
building where the corn show Is held.
Mayor A. J. Gillis gave an address
of welcome, which was responded to
by William McMurray. general passen
ger agent, and C. L. Smith, agricul
turist of the railroad. Mr. McMurray
announced that his company had Just
mailed 30,000 local time tables, on the
front page of which was an advertise
ment for Walla Walla and the corn
show.
C Lv Smith declared that since he had
started work there had been an in
crease of 20 per cent in corn acreage In
this county and that he expected a 60
per cent increase in another year.
The show Itself is gay with lights
and natural colors. Decorations are
corn and pumpkins and there are ex
hibits from nearly every point touched
by the O.-W. R. & N.
A feature is the exhibits made by
boys. Leonara Dunlap, of Prescott, has
a 12-ear exhibit. She is tho only girl
to enter the competition. Her corn
compares with any of that of the boys.
The O.-W. R. & N. Co. will give a
banquet for the youthful exhibitors
Friday. Paul Weyrauch, 7-year-old son
of Captain P. H. Weyrauch, president
of the Commercial Club, and manager
of the Blalock Fruit Company, is the
youngest exhibitor. "Rusty," as he is
called, has a shock of com that touches
the ceiling.
Prosser has a community exhibit,
seven farmers showing as many varie
ties grown on land, that, till a few
years ago, raised only sagebrush and
Jackrabbits. The show will continue
all week.
The number of entries tonight
reached 172.
