WITHYC01E BUSY
WITH JOB HUNTERS
Each State Office Has Horde
of Candidates, Even Those
That Carry No Salary.
EX-SHERIFFS PULL WIRES
Penitentiary Wardenship Appeals to
Many Reorganization of Several
Posts Are Forecast to Onst '
Democrats Xow In.
Applicants for Jobs under the new
state administration are growing: more
numerous every day.
No office within the rift of either
the Governor, the Legislature or the
State Board of Control has been over
looked by any of theeager band of
office seekers.
The superintendency and wardenship
of the State Penitentiary now seem the
most oesirabie, judging from the num
ber of aspirants.
To read over a list of applicants for
these places is like scanning a regis
ter of the ex-Sheriffs of various Ore-
Son counties.
Among the most prominent candi
dates now in the field for the peniten
tiary superintendency are Ell Maddox.
ex-faherirr of Clackamas . County;
rnomas jjinnvllle, ex-Sheriff of Clat
sop County, and Harry P. Minto, ex.
Bherlff of Marion County.
It is reported also that John Minto,
of Portland, is a receptive candidate
for the place in the event his brother,
tiarry, is not appointed.
Some May Be Retained.
It is generally conceded that the new
administration will restore the former
policy at the penitentiary and retain
a superintendent as well as a warden.
Among the prominent applicants for
the wardenship are "Dad" Hunter and
Andy Vaughn, Portland detectives
Frank Curtis, an ex-warden; James
Cooper, of Portland, and several others
In Portland and other parts of the
state.
Although the Governqr has not the
power to appoint a state game warden
a great many Republicans are proceed
ing on the theory that a reorganiza
tion will follow the advent of the new
administration and that the office will
become vacant.
J. D. Zurcher, of Roseburg, who was
In Portland on business yesterday.
wants to do game warden, so does D.
l-. Ward man, who served as field sec
retary for the Republican county com
mittee in Portland during the recent
campaign. Ward man has many in
lursBiuBuia. uiaer candidates . are
William P. Lake, of Portland, and Ed
Morgan, of Washington County.
Applicants for the office of state
-printer are more than ordinarily active.
inasmuch as that place ia to be filled
before the close of the present admin
lstratlon. Governor West has the ap
pointing power, but he has Indicated
his desire to allow Governor-elect
withycombe to name the man. In that
event a number of prominent Repub
llcans will seek the office. Among
in em are ueorge u. lu snyder, of Salem
H. O. Kundret. of Portland: W. M.
Plimton, the present secretary of the
t-tate .Printing Board, and probably K.
. K. Kubli, of Portland.
Portland Man Seeks Plaee.
Although the office of State Insur
ance Commissioner does not expire
until January, 1917, a good many
Republicans want the Legislature to
change the law so that the office can
be filled by one of their number im
mediately after the new administration
goes into power. Among the appli
cants for the place are Henry C Prud
homme. a Portland insurance man.
Marvey Wells, of Portland, who
servea as treasurer of the Republican
State Committee, also has been men.
tioned in that connection, but he denies
mat ne is an applicant. Local Insur
ance men point out that Wells' pres
ent income from blB own insurance
business is far In excess of the salary
attached to' the job and doubt whether
he will take it even if it is tendered
him. Wells and Dr. Withycombe have
been personal friends for many years.
Bowlby Wanted by Republicans.
W. W. Lucius, of Portland, Is said
to be after the position of state high
way engineer, a place now held by
Major H. L. Bowlby. A number of
prominent Republicans will ask the
new Governor to retain Major Bowlby
In office. The office pays $3000 a year.
Scores of persons have applied to
the newly elected Governor for places
on the various boards and commissions
to which no salaries are attached. At
the same time there is a movement
on foot among members of the new
Legislature- to abolish a good many
boards and to consolidate others.
One way by which Democrats now
In office can be ousted is to abolish
the offices that they hold,, then create
new offices to handle the same work
and fill these offices with Republicans.
It Is apparent that considerable pres
sure will be brought upon the Legis
lature to proceed in this way.
This will apply particularly to' the
state flsh and game commission, which
has the power to appoint the state
game warden and the master flsh
warden. It is probable that the entire
commission will be reorganized.
In the event that a new game
warden Is to be appointed it Is cer
tain that many Republicans partic
ularly among the sportsmen will ap
peal to the administrtion to retain W.
L. Flnley, the Incumbent.
Watson's Job Is Songbt.
Another desirable plum that Is looked
upon longingly by Republioan eyes is
the commlssionershp of corporations
now held by Ralph. Watson, a West
appointee and formerly private secre
tary to the present Governor. Watson's
'term does not expire until January 4,
1917, but It has been suggested that
the Legislature make the corporation
department a bureau In the office of
the Secretary of State. The Governor
or the board of control then would be
empowered to place a man of their own
choice at the head of the bureau. -
But the office of most Immediate
concern is that of private secretary to
the Governor. Dr. Withycombe has
announced that he will fill this place
before another week passes. Although
he has a score of applications he is
understood to be considering only two
or three men seriously.
