The great bank of shining apples,
flanked by a lighthouse built of ap
ples, which was installed "by the North
Pacific Fruit Distributors under the au.
pervlsion of C. A. Malboeuf at the Man
ufacturers' & Land Products Show at
the Armory, was awarded the grand
prize yesterday. The prize consists of
a gold medal banner and $100 in cash,
set aside for the finest apple-advertising
display in the competition. In the
judging novelty and beauty of design,
excellent condition and appearance of
the fruit and merits as a medium of
advertising the apple were taken into
consideration.
The exhibit is placarded with cards
bearing epigrams on the merits of the
apple. At one side is a model of the
globe surrounded by placards bearing
on them the legend, "Buy them by the
box," printed in 10 languages.
Hood River Second. .
Hood River's apple exhibit won sec
ond prize, a silver 'medal banner and
$60. This display was a pyramid of
beautiful boxed apples rising and cul
minating in a replica of Mount Hood,
which was lighted with changing col
ored lights.
The Sealei -Dresser Company was
awarded third prize. Its exhibit was
simple, but striking. The booth was
lined with dark mosses and in the cen
ter stood a siege gun, built of red
apples.
The judges began their work Mon
day afternoon and probably will have
the major part of the judging finished
by this evening, although the great
variety of exhibits that must be con
sidered will make the work rather slow
. today.
C J. Slnsel, of Boise, Idaho, who
served at the Land Show two years
ago, is here again as a judge. Working
with Mr. Sinsel are E. D. Whitney and
S. D. Parker.
The show was well crowded all yes
terday afternoon in spite of the inter
est in the election that was expected
to keep many from attending. In the
evening programmes were given under
the ausDices of the Builders' Exehnnee
the Oregon Industry League and the
federation of States Societies.
Vote Returns Flashed.
Election returns were flashed in the
ballroom of the Armory and attracted
a large crowd.
The concert by McElroy's band in the
afternoon and evening attracted many
and the Hawaiian troubadors were a
populaw feature, with hourly pro
grammes in the Land Products exhibit
hall.
Arrangements have been made with
Eilers Piaon House for a special fea
ture which will begin this afternoon.
Lloyd W. McDowell, director of special
events, completed the' arrangements
yesterday for a three days' engage
ment of the Octavos , from the Eilers
house, who will appear afternoons and
evenings in the Land Products' exhibit
ball, giving concerts on eight pianos.
The principal features for this even
ing are the programme by students of
the Gillespie School of Expression, and
the programme of the Parent-Teachers'
Association.
Programmes for these meetings are:
