CAL EWING IS RECEPTIVE Owner of Seals Says He and Partner Will Not Sell Unless Assured CInb Conducted on Right Plane. . - McCredle Harries Home. PAN F-RANC1SCO. Oct- 28. (Special.) "With the Coast League annual ses sion a, thing- of the past, the magnates who had been caller to San Francisco for this important gathering were scattering- today. Judge McCredie, of Portland, was In a hurry to return home and lost no time in taking his departure. Charlie Jraham, representing minority stock holders of the Mission club, was on deck today, but took the train tonight for Sacramento. Henry Berry and Happy Jloean were gathering up odds and ends, but will leave tomorrow after noon at the latest. With the exception of the committee named to dispose of the Mission fran chise, said committee consisting of Cal lowing. Frank Leavitt and A. T. Baum, there remains no unfinished business. Just when this committee wiil get down to action is a matter of specu lation. Members of the committee de clare that they will await the outside propositions from cities that would like to be listed with the Coast League. It la considered likely something will he done before the league executive leaves for the meeting of the minor leagues in Omaha on November 10. Graham Ye HopefoL Charlie Graham declared he was still hopeful he would be able to bring about successful negotiations to cause the return of the team to Sacramento. "The business men want the team there, and I think we will be able to arrange the matter," he said. According to Cal Kwing, nothing more than tentative propositions have been submitted to himself and his business partner, Frank M. Ish, for the hale of the San Francisco baseball club. "We are in a receptive mood," he declared, "and have been for some time. However, we will not sell un less we are assured the club will fall Into the hands of men who will conduct baseball on the right plane." Hognn ot Bidder. Hap Hogan denied today that he was m bidder for the San Francisco fran chise and explained he was quite well satisfied to remain where he is. It i3 understood that Tom Stephens, of San Jose, woulrl like to get the club if it can be arranged, and possibly Kwing and Ish will find a way of retiring actively from the sport. The suggested deal for the transfer 4f Hoy Corhan to the Philadelphia Na tionals is hanging fire. Scout Billy Kcal, while h admits he would like to have Corhan, lias so far refused to place a prie on the Albuquerque al- f a if a farmer, and indicates that he wants to talk trade. Kvving prefers a monetary offr. Corhan quite will- inirlv admits that he would like an other chance in the big brush, and there is no question but that he is entitled to that opportunity. Tel How ard seems satisfied that some propo sition will go through hefore the W in ter is ended to gi ve Corhan his wish President Baum has taken no stens looking to the reduction of his staff of umpires from six to three, but. as it is simply a case of picking the best men, he should have no trouble on his hands. 1'nquesttonably K. Mays, Eastley and Evans to Twirl on Monday. DOUBLE-HEADER ON .TAPIS Pearl C'aey 31 ay I'nipire and Eddie -Mensor Likely to Be Seen in Play Touring Teams Oppose liaeli Other Two Days. Carl Slays, Eastley and Evan Evans will do the twirling for the near Beaver team in the double-header against the National and American league all-stars next Monday after noon at Recreation Park. It is likely that Pearl Casey will officiate as um pire. Higginbotham was expected to be here for the game against the big league tourists, but has not put in appearance so far. Doane, Evans, Eastley, Lober, Davis and Rodgers have already arrived in town. P'isher has been in since Sunday and Buddy Ryan perambulated in on his crippled limb Saturday. Speaking of the team to go against the all-stars yesterday. Bill Rodgers gave out the following list of players and the positions they probably will rill: Fisher will catch. Eastley. Evans and Mays pitch and play in the outfield, Lober will play left and Ryan center field. Rodgers will hold down second base, "Davis shortstop and Eddie Men sor, the former Portlander, now with Pittsburg, will frolic at third. This gives all of the Beavers a chance to get into the game, but leaves a va cancy at first base. Rodgers said that an effort would be made to have Nick Williams hold down that sack. The two big league touring teams will play exhibitions against them selves on Saturday and Sunday, and then on Monday the Oregon aggrega tion will do battle against the in vaders. The trade pulled off "between Walt McCredie and Hap Hogan. whereby Portland .gives Catcher Tantz for Pitcher Smith, means that Dan Murray will be second-string catcher for the Beavers next year. Brenegan told friends when he went East a fortnight ago that he did not intend to return. so it may be that Mack is figuring on only two catchers, per the 18-limit rule. So 'far as Smith is concerned, he is said to have a million-dollar arm and a Jack Johnson head. He is hard to handle, because of his irascibility. Smith broke In at Birmingham, in the Southern League, three or four years ago. In 1912 he won 15 games and lost eight for the Southern Association team. The White Sox grabbed him in 1913, but he was not given much of a chance with the Sox. Last Spring he had an altercation with Kid Gleason. assistant manager of the Chicago team, and was turned over to -Venice when the team departed for the East. Smith gained considerable publicity during the training season at San Fran cisco In a practice game between the Seals and the Sox. The fans had been panning him during the game, and he turned to the crowd and yelled: "I'll be glad when we get back to the United States." , Ever since then he has been known as U. . Ac cording to a letter received here by Mrs. Norman Selby, wife of the pugil ist, "Kid" McCoy, from a friend in Paris, France has lost four noted box ers in the European war. and a fifth probably is fatally wounded. Those thought to have been killed are Charles Ledeaux. Charles Struber, Adrian Hagan and Max Stinger. Le deaux is known in this country, hav ing fought at Los Angeles. The wounded boxer is Georges Car pentier. the idol of the sporting public of France, who recentLy defeated Gun boat Smith in London. ICarpentier was taken to a hospital with a bullet punctured lung, and is not expected to recover. Sounds? the Sport Reveille Here is an astonishing bit of testi mony from a prominent Portland phy sician about the lack of resisting power in an over-trained athlete: "An athlete who at one time." he says, "has strained his nervous system to collapse requires far greater care than a patient 70 years of age who has lived a normal life." He referred especially to the use of anaesthetics and -declared that in his practice of administering them th ex athlete was invariably a source of so licitude. "Tt is not so much the effect of over strain on the heart specifically as it is upon the entire nervous system, upon the vital stamina of which depends the physical energy of the organs," he said. It used to be a fashion for writers to tell of college boys and girls who studied' themselves into untimely graves. The old-fashioned cartoonist also has found -delight in picturing the student hastening his end by study. According- to the local physician, how ever, overwork of the brain -does not shorten as many student lives as over work of bone and muscle. Here's a tip for the betting frater nity: Find- out what championship the Army and Navy play for, then find out who the champions of this champion ship are. then bet against these cham pions. You can't lose. Speaking of falling into a well and coming out with a grand piano, Her bert Moran began the season with the Cincy Reds and finished with the Braves. The following clipping in the New York Mail caused us to scratch our head and pon-der: "In the hnrrah and glamour attend ing the world's series, we trust that it will not be forgotten that Walla Walla closed a successful season in the Western Trl-State League." Today in Pugilistic Annals. 188 Jack McAuliffe knocked out Bill Frazler in the twenty-first round at Boston. This bout was for th lightweight championship. MoAullffo claimed the title in 1888, after his frlond Jack Dempsey grew too heavy for the lishtweight division, and de fended it against Jack Hopper early in 188. Frailer, although he had been beaten by Dompsey, also laid claim to the honor. ' The victory of the little snun from Cork made him the ur.diu iiuted champion of iha UKhtweisnta, f&VV.
