The Republican Congressional Commit
tee of the First District, which is man
hi? ing- the campaign for the re-election
of Representative Hawley, re
ports the situation from over all the
district as most encouraging:. Chair
man Culver says that conditions could
not be more favorable and that it is
expected that Mr. Hawley will carry
the district by a heavier plurality than
two years ago when he defeated his
nearest opponent by more than 11,500
votes.
The newspapers of the district last
week gave expression to the demand
of the people that a large vote be giv
en Mr. Hawley for the effective ser
vice he has rendered the state and Na
tion and as an expression of the ap
preciation of his constituents because
he has remained steadily at work in
"Washington, even in the face of the
misrepresentations that his opponents
are indulging in at home.
Mr, H a ley Prompt.
In commenting on the work of Rep
resentative Hawley, the Cottage Grove
Sentinel said:
The Sentinel has had frequent occasion
to take up matters with Oregon's mem
fcers of Congress, and be it said to the
credit of Congressman Hawley that his
reply was always the first received and
always the most satisfactory. The prompt
ness of his replies showed that he was on
the job and the information In those replies
showed that he had taken the matters up
promptly with the proper departments. The
Sentinel challenges anyone in the district,
he he. Democrat. Republican, or what not,
to prove that he has ever written Con
pressman Hawley without getting an im
mediate reply. The Sentinel challenges
anyone to say that lie has asked any rea
sonable service of Congressman Hawley that
the latter has r.ot performed to the best of
his ability und in a battsfactory manner.
These sentiments also were expressed
by the Tillamook Headlight, the Dally
Statesman, the Rogue River Argus,
the Lebanon Criterion, and other pa
pers of the district.
Many Letters Received,
These sentiments are not restricted
to the newspapers solely, for hundreds
of letters are being received at head
quarters from all over the district and
they ar uniformly favorable.
The Democratic candidate appears to
have become so impressed with his
self-importance that he is taking a
fling at his predecessors who have
aspired to run for Congress on the
Lemocrtic ticket. For an instance, in
paid advertisements he is running in
the newspapers, ho makes this state
ment: "Heretofore the Democrats have
nominated a weak brother to run
against Mr. Hawley, and made his re
turn easy." This is a doubtful com
pliment to Charles V. Galloway, Robert
tl. Smith and Judge- J. J. Whitney, all
of whom are conceded to be far more
capable than the present Democratic
aspirant.

there has been a total expenditure of
$26,318.84 on Baker County roads. The
roads are in excellent shape. The great
er part of the money was expended in
increasing the number of roads.
BAKER RENOMINATES DUO
Mayor Palmer Now Will Be Opposed
in Race for Office.
BAKER, Or., Oct. 20. (Special.) C.
L. Palmer, Mayor, and George Henry,
City Commissioner, were renominated
virtually by a unanimous vote today
with but little more than 10 per cent
of the total registration of the city
voting. There were no contests, but
as under the city charter two at the
primary election receiving the highest
number of votes are declared the can
didates at the election to be held in
two weeks, the Mayor will be opposed.
Mayor Palmer's opponent will be
Roland Eccles, Kccles' name having
been written in on the ballots by some
voters. Althugh there probably will
not me. serious opposition to either
candidate for re-election November 2,
the fight will be waged around a pro
posed charter amendment to abolish
the commission form of government
and substitute the city manager form.
The present administration is fighting
this and is. promising to install a mu
nicipal lighting plant for Baker homes
if returned to office.

WALLA WALLA, Wash., Oct. 20.
(Special.) Miss Catherine Theresa
Ennis was married to Robert E. Ulea
son, of Portland, at beautiful and im
pressive services at St. Patrick's
Church this morning. Rev. Father Van
Devan celebrated nuptial high mass.
Miss Edna Kindred, Miss Margaret
Corbett, Miss Lillian Davis and Miss
Marie Chapman were bridesmaids. They
were classmates of Miss Ennis when
she graduated from St. Mary's Academy
in Portland in June. Miss Ennis was
given in marriage by her brother. Matt
C. Ennis. with whom she had made her
home. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris
Ennis, now dead, were prominent and
wealthy pioneers. The couple motored
to Milton and took the afternoon train
for Portland.

CENTRALIA. Wash., Oct. 20. (Spe
cial.) The completion of Centralia's
municipal gravity water system.ending
the city's long fight for pure -water,
was celebrated today;
The programme began at 10:30 this
morning with a civic and military pa
rade more than a mile in length, fol
lowed by several addresses. W. H.
Cameron, a local attorney, was speaker
of the day and Fred W. Thomas mar
shal. Nearly every business house in
the city joined in the festivities. Music
and a demonstration by the fire depart
ment were added attractions. The fes
tivities ended with a street carnival
and masqirerade. Prizes were given for
the best costume and for the farmer
bringing the biggest load of visitors.
Sweetheart Weds, Best Man Suicide.
SEATTI.E. Oct. 20. Eugene Lien-
hart, aged 32, attended the wedding
yesterday of his former sweetheart.
Miss Cecelle Roesch, to John Ball, and
acted as best- man. Then he went home
and killed himself. The body was dis
covered today when Mrs. Ball called to
inquire about him.

newspapers. They are regarded as
respectable works of art. The 2 mark
bill is of mingled zed and gray color.

green in color. There is disinclination
all over the country to give change for
notes of more than 10 marks.
The Berliner Tageblatt complains bit
terly that the size of the rye loaf which
usually costs 6d is growing .smaller.
and that bakers all over the country
are reducing the weight of the indis
pensable white roll. Ordinary rye
bread is now more than 2d a pound,
and the tendency is ever upward.
Ixgger Killed by Falling: Tree. .
ASTORIA, Or., Oct. 20. (Special.)
Julius L-abiske, aged 37. an employe
at the Palmer & Libby logging camp
on the Walluski River, was killed
instantly while at work there today by
a tree falling on him. He was a. native
of Germany and leaves a widow and
several children. This was the first
accident in Clatsop County in which
the relatives will receive aid under the
workmen's compensation act.
Road Worker Killed by lulling Tie.
CEXTRALIA, Wash., Oct. 20. (Spe
cial.) While unloading ties at the
Milwaukee gravel pit, three miles from
Grand Mound. Sunday night. Pat Buck
ley, an employe of the road, was killed
instantly when a tie fell on him, strik
ing his head and breaking his neck.

Delinquent Taxes Are Large.

The report of the tax collector for
Baker County shows that $94,837.78
in taxes is delinquent. About one-third
is for last year and the remainder ex
tends back to 1897. Suits are under
way by the District Attorney to collect
the outstanding indebtedness.
