We, the undersigned, are OPPOSED TO STATEWIDE PROHIBITION, for the following reasons:
There is already in existence a law which permits ANY COMMUNITY to decide this question for ITSELW, known as
the LOCAL OPTION LAW.
STATEWIDE PR0HD3ITI0N deprives communities of HOME RULE AND LOCAL OPTION.
CONTINUED AGITATION of the liquor question and its injection into active politics is HARMFUL, not only to the
cause of TRUE TEMPERANCE, but also to the BUSINESS INTERESTS and INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT - OF
OREGON.
Placing Oregon among the "dry" states would RETARD ITS DEVELOPMENT and give COMPETING STATES
TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH Washington and California AN ADVANTAGE IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERCOME.
STATEWIDE PROHIBITION would throw TEN THOUSAND MEN OUT OF EMPLOYMENT in Oregon. ,
STATEWIDE PROHIBITION would CONFISCATE much valuable property and DEPRECIATE THE VALUE OF
ALL PROPERTY. '
STATEWIDE PROHIBITION would DECREASE CITY REVENUES and thereby MATERIALLY INCREASE GEN
ERAL TAXATION.
STATEWIDE PROHIBITION would TURN AWAY FROM THE STATE MANY DESIRABLE SETTLERS, who are
SO MUCH NEEDED to improve our WASTE LANDS. '
STATEWIDE PROHIBITION would cause the VACANCY IN PORTLAND ALONE of not less than FIVE HUN
DRED STORES AND FIFTEEN HUNDRED DWELLINGS, which, at a moderate estimate, are now paying yearly rentals
aggregating ONE AND ONE-HALF MILLION DOLLARS aadin ALL OTHER CITIES would result in a PROPORTIONATE
AMOUNT of vacant stores and dwellings and LOSS OF RENTALS.
We favor the STRICT REGULATION of the liquor traffic WHEREVER LICENSED and STRICT ENFORCEMENT
of the law IN ALL COMMUNITIES, but are OPPOSED TO CONTINUED AGITATION of a measure like STATEWIDE
PROHIBITION, that can accomplish NO USEFUL .PURPOSE.
