CANADIAN CAMP ASTOUNDS
General Tinzer Says 3 5,00 0 Men
Mobilized Xear Quebec.
A wonderful sight is Valcartier, the
Canadian mobilization camp near Que
bec, declares Adjutant-General Finzer,
of the Oregon National Guard, who has
just returned from a trip to Boston,
where he attended the annual meeting
of National Guard officers of the
United States. On his way back he
passed a short time looking over the
Canadian mobilization camp.
"It is a wonderful sight," said Gen
eral Finzer. "It covers about 40 square
miles in a pretty valley. Over this en
tire area are tents in which the troops
are living while the preliminary train
lng is taking place preparatory to the
troops being sent to Europe.
"The camp was excellently laid out
and shows results of much hard work.
Roads have been built, sewers installed
and training places are laid out. The
main street of the camp is four miles
long. I saw target practice on a range
where 1400 ?rnen could shoot at one
frrie. There' were about 35.000 men In
the camp."

MOBILIZING SEEN TWICE
COLONEL HAMMOND VIEWS ARMY
AT JCAREZ ASD QUEBEC.

EUGENE, Or., Sept 30. (Special.)
Telling of witnessing mobilization of
troops in Montreal and Juarez within
two weeks, and of general war condi
tions throughout the continent, Colonel
Creed C. Hammond, commander of the
Oregon Coast Artillery Corps, O. N. G..
returned last night from a 10,000-mile
circuit of the United States covering
almost a month.
He was in Quebec when an army of
35,000 Canadian volunteers were mob
ilized, and in Juarez when Villa's de
nouncement of Carranza was an
nounced. He saw the operations of
the Mexican General in rushing his
troops to Chihuahua, where he re
viewed 40,000.
Colonel Hammond says Juarez is a
wide-open town, with gambling-houses
every few feet. A Villa sdldier stood
in every doorway and appropriated
half the winnings of the gamblers, he
said. He declares the feeling is strong
in favor of Villa In Northern Mexico,
along both sides of the river.
The army in Quebec is described by
Colonel Hammond as the finest body
of volunteers he ever saw.
"All are mature men, there are no
boys among them," he said. "Fifteen
per cent of them have seen active serv
ice in the Boer war or in British en
gagements, and they are a fine-looking
lot."
He declares that Western Canada is
prosperous as a result of the war
wheat selling there at tl.32.
"In Brockton, the shoemen are turn
ing out all the shoes with cloth tops,
because they can t get kid from Ger
many, said Colonel Hammond. -
Colonel Hammond attended the Na
tional Guard convention in Boston.

attractions to hold the spectators, some
on the track and some in the arena,
and every minute was an interesting
and exciting one for the onlookers.
They were kept on the qui vive to see
everything that was going on. There
were all kinds of thrilling excitement
and close finishes.
The first event of the afternoon
swept the crowd with enthusiasm, tl
wa sthe "wild bull riding." Several men
of the cow country tried to ride the
big red animal which was brought
out. About all each did was to cut
iimes in tiie air oeiore hitting
the grit, the bull promptly dumping
every would-be rider.
Another bull appeared on the scene,
but he was equally determined to carry
no extra weight and he, too, got away
wit it.
The Indian relay race was a fine
exhibition. For two-thirds of the mile
and half, three of the redskins were
neck and neck. William McBride grad
ually drew away from his competitors,
however, and was an easy winner, be-
ish for second, .Te?se George winning by
a nose from Wllkins Williams.

Sale of Hunting Licenses an Arms
Greatest on Record.

FARMERS FEAR FIREBUG
Camp Creek. Barns and Crops Are
Destroyed in Series of Blazes.
EUGENE, Or.. Sept. 30. (Special.)
After the mysterious destruction by
fire of three barns within scarcely
more than a week, farmers in the vi
cinity of Camp Creek, a. tributary to
the McKenzie. 12 miles east of Eugene,
are alarmed for fear that the unknown
incendiary will continue his work.
Last night the barn of John Potter,
with all of the stored crop and with two
horses, was destroyed by fire which
broke out shortly after 1 o'clock. It
was a total less. Less than a week
ago a barn belonging to Folk Harley
was burned with all its contents, and
a few days before this, a barn with
crops owned by Andrew Stevens was
destroyed.
