FEDS RAID COftST One From Venice and Two An gels Seek Posts. WHOLESALE GRAB PLANNED Draii Period Druwirig to Close, Great Endeavor Is Made to Glean Men; "Bit" Promised Is Iure to Players. CHICAGO. Sept. 10. (Special.) A loud roar may be expected trom the Pacific Coast League magnates. The Federals are on their trail. What may prove the first of a series of raids came out when one member of the Venice (Cal.) club and two members of the Los Angeles aggrega tion unblushingly announced they were flirting seriously with the third league clubs. . One of the men who admitted thinK ing of hopping to Gllmore'e, circuit is 'Babe" Borton, once a White Sox first baseman and now holding down that position for the Venice club. Borton has already signed with St. Louis, but will finish the season on the Coast. Johnson and Ryan Apply. The other players arc Ernie Johnson and Jack Ryan, shortstop and pitcher respectively with Los Angeles. They have been made flattering offers, Chi cago trying to induce Johnson to jump, while Brooklyn wants Ryan, once with the Naps. Johnson is a. Chicago boy and for this reason probably will desert Los' Angeles for his home town. In a few days the public will learn that additional Coast Leaguers have gone over to Gllmore's circuit. The reaBOn for the Federals' becoming so active at this time is plain. Drafting time Is only four days hence and the "Feds" plan to grab the players who appear good enough to be taken by the majors in the draft net. Chance In Enticing. In this way the Coast League club owners lose the amount of coin hand ed over for a drafted player, but the athlete gets his "bit," hence he is easily induced to sign a Federal con tract. , Not long ago the Coast Leaguers let out a wall against the draft. They wanted it abolished, but the big fellows refused to notice the complaint. Back of it was the Federal League bugaboo. Now that the "Feds" have openly an nounced a campaign for the acquisi tion of the stars of the league beyond the mountains another howl may be looked for. The Coast Leaguers, like other minors, want protection. "Or ganized' baseball" will have to cook up a soothing syrup or a chaotic condition never before known in baseball will exist next season.
