FILM PET AT COLUMBIA TVhlte Slave Picture, "Traffic In fciouls," Is Star Feature, "Fan tomas" at Majestic Amazes and Suneet Has Variety. "My Official Wife," at the Globe The ater. Is the best Vltaerapb Been here. The story. Intensely interesting at all times, is from the book and play by Richard Savaee. Clara Young, as the beautiful Nihilist entering Russia, knowing that the entire secret force Is trying to find her, gives a perfect Interpretation- The American, Lennox, who obliges a handsome woman who has -lost her passport, by allowing her to enter as his wife, little dreams who she is, and what complications will arise. She becomes bis official wife. Helena Marie la ready to leave, but finds this even more difficult, until she makes a young aristocrat believe he Is In love with him, and they use his yacht. The police pursue them. The entire play has most beautiful Bettings, with exciting situations throughout The ball given to the Czar and Czarina Is artistic, and launching of a torpedo and Its explosion blowing up a yacht Is something never before attempted in pictures. The programme ends with a scream ing comedy with that funny pair, Wedd and Darby. This bill will prevail for the remainder of the week. FAVORITE IS AT COLUMBIA Blanche Sweet Shines In "The Sec ond Mrs. Roebuck." BUnche Sweet, the favorite photo play star, scores a great success In "The Second Mrs, Roebuck." a two-part Majestic society drama, which came to the Columbia yesterday.' She Is at her best in this port of play, where she can display her good looks and winning personality, and she Improves every op portunity in this production. Margaret Edwards, pronounced the most perfect example of physical de velopment in the world, and Fay Tln cher, the favorite comedienne, are to be seen In a breezy Komlo company entitled "A Physical Culture Romance." Though Fay's beautiful sister steals all her beaux from her, a physical culture teacher comes to her aid and Injects mime sort of magic into the girl,' which jnakes her far more attractive than the other. There are plenty of thrills offered in the eleventh episode of "The Million Collar Mystery" to satisfy the most ex acting. Plot and counterplot, intrigue and underhand dealing fill every foot of the two reels and there are some wonderfully spectacular features, in cluding a realistic railroad wreck. This bill runs until Sunday. "FANTOMA6" RULES MAJESTIC Comings and Goings of Crook De tctlve Are Startling. "Fan to mas. the Crook Detective," Is back again. He returned to the Ma jestic for a four days' stay yesterday. He Is still up to his old tricks of de ceiving the public. This time he kills an examining magistrate and poses as his victim In the court He Is found out by the detective and the newspaper man and placed In prison, but Is released by one of the guards, his accomplice. As Fantomas wraps his cloak of mys tery about him he becomes more and more Interesting. Virtue Is its own reward In "The Curing of Mr. Goodheart" The kind hearted man attempted to relieve suf fering humanity, but every time he 'got in bad." The "movies" cured him. Complications heaped themselves upon the tramp and the "nice man" in "Mlxup at Murphy's." a bubbling com edy. The plot is new and lively. , The Hearst-Sellg News Pictorial shows the latest war news. WHITE SLAVE FILM AT STAR Traffic In Souls," Thrilling Reel, Has Moral Lesson. "The Traffic In Souls." one of the most graphie white slave pictures yet produced for the screen, is being shown at the Star Theater. The play deals essentially with one (girl, showing how she was made to face a life of shame and how she final ly held out until the police came to her rescue, -in odd machine Is used by the sister of the captured girl to expose the methods of the "trust" The play carries its lesson. Long terms In prison are meted out to those actively engaged in the snaring of girls. "Traffic In Souls" Is a powerful pic ture, with a strong moral lesson. In terest is held tense from first to last and many of the film situations are ex tremely thrilling. The girl in the case battles like a Trojan to escape her foes, and her final triumph prompts spectators to applaud vehemently. Traveler Says Capital Is Desolate aad Expresses Admiration for Its People Germans Disliked. A letter has been received by friends in Portland from 'William T. Carrins- ton, a well-known New Yorker, who has refused all opportunities to come home, preferring rather to remain in Paris to render what assistance he can and to watch the great struggle frora close quarters. He is loud in his praises of the French, both of the military and of the general people, of their prepara tions for the care or tne sicii ana wounded. His letter, in Dart, is: We are In the midst of such wonderful time everything is crowded from our minds except those who are thinking only of them selves and have to get away and home. Paris is cuite deserted. How they have managed it I do not know, for it means discomfort at the best, and no end of de lay, because most of the trains are used for troops and there are but few Channel boats. Many of my friends have gone by motor. 1 am not making any effort to get away: In fact I have refused several chances and am so much interested that I am re maining Just to do what I can to help here and watch the most important event in history. We are so thankful to have Myron Herrick here and Judge Gary is doing such great work.. This caring for unfortunate Americans will soon be over, and Paris will be full of wounded, but preparations are wonder ful and everyone will be cared for well. My admiration for the Frenchmen is great I have seen them in the country, In the city, and marching to the front, only to take off my hat to their character, spirit, manhood and courage; a united na tion, going to war to maintain its honor and to regain its own, while Germany has lost the respect of the world and Its people are not united. Did anyone ever see any thing finer than the Belgian defense? I am sure that this war had to come some time, and from It much good, a united Europe, no more war footing, and even Germany will be a most prosperous republlo with much more territory than she has now. Paris is dead, but a new interest centers. Everybody spends as little as possible and those who remain are going to work. It Is fine to see this great period, and I am glad to be here. I am going to live in cheap quarters and spend the money where so much is needed in other places. IRISH-AMERICANS SET DAY Fellowship Club to Have Picnic at Canemah Saturtlay.
