NEWBERG, Or., Sept. 1. (Special.) A visit yesterday to the hop yards on the opposite side of the Willamette from Newberg discloses the fact that the crop will be much better than was predicted a few weeks ago. Dr. W. E. Mallory, who has 80 acres which have begun to bear recently, says that a portion of these will produce a ton this year, which is far beyond .the yield of the first crop. He began pick ing today. C. F. Yeager, who has 14 acres and employs 65 pickers, begun work August 26. He says he has the biggest crop on one-year vines in that part of the state and that they will produce a ton and a half to the acre. John P. Ranzau and wife, who have bout 70 acres of hops, have Just com menced picking. They often employ 400 pickers. Last year a portion of their land produoed three tons to the acre. Three hundred and twenty-five pick ers went to work on the splendid farm of A. J. Ray & Sons yesterday. It is expectec that the pieking will last three weeks. The crop is heavy and covers 130 aores. A. J. Ray & Sons have added to their drying capacity. It takes 100 pounds of green hops to make 26 of dry. At all the plaoea visited an Immense amount of work had been expended In preparation for a crop. Heavy posts were set and well braced and from these heavy galvanized wire was strung on which to train the vines. The ground was as free of weeds as a well-kept fjarden. The expense of cultivating, picking and putting into the bins ready for drying is estimated at 6 cents a pound. The hop yards above referred to may be taken as fair samples of those In that vicinity. The pickers include many persons from Portland and Newberg. Pleasant camping grounds are provided and so ciability is a marked feature of the picking season. At the Ray farm Sun day school exercises were held by some of the pickers. On the roads to these yards are posted such placards as:: '"War de stroved the hop yards of Europe. Pro hibition will surely destroy the Ore scon hop yards. Register and vote 333 No against prohibition. Hopgrowers and Dealers' Association. Twenty-five dollars' reward will be paid for the ar rest and conviction of anyone found destroying this placard." COTTAGE GROVE HAS FIRE Store Is Damaged $20,000 to $25, 000 and Building $5000. COTTAGE GROVE. Or., Sept. 1. (Special.) Fire which started Sunday rooming almost destroyed the Rees Wallace Company stock of general mer chandise, owned by J. H. Bolden. The Spray building, in which the stock was contained, also suffered considerable damage. Parker's garage, located in the same building, would have suffered severely but for the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Parker sleep in the building. Clad only in hia nightclothes Mr. Parker re moved all his machines from the build ing, together with considerable other material and supplies. Two hundred dollars will probably cover his loan. J. H. Bolden estimates his loss at J20.000 to $25,000, partly covered by In BUSINESS DIRECTORY DANCING. PROF.
