PLANT TO GO TO CHINA .oss of Higher Wool Prices, Market for Products and Another Pay roll Is Laid Directly to Democratic Regime. Oregon mohair producers have had a practical demonstration of the dis astrous consequences of tariff meddling by the present Democratic Administra tion. The Wilson policy has not only re sulted in a material reduction of the market price of mohair, but it also forced the Multnomah Mohair Mills, a Portland Institution, the only factory in 'the West established for convert ing the raw material into manufactured goods, to close its plant down In definitely. Plant Hu Steady Grontk. Four years ago John Eben Young and his associates organized the Multnomah Mohair Mills and erected a plant at gellwood that represented an Invest ment of $225,000. The mill had a ca pacity of 1,000,000 yards annually, rep resenting an output of $500,000, and was amply large to handle about one half the combined clip of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, aver aging 750,000 pounds, the bulk of which Is produced in this state. The mill began on a smaller scale, but, as the requirements of the trade demanded, additional units were de veloped until, at the beginning of 1913, it was being operated to capacity, furnishing employment to 150 men and women. The factory was forced out of business In the Summer of 1913, soon after the Underwood bill went into effect. Factory to Move to China. Mr. Young explained yesterday that he Is negotiating for the removal of the plant, machinery and equipment to China, where cheap labor is enabling manufacturers to benefit from the re duced tariff schedules. "When we began operations," said Mr. Young yesterday, "we paid 20 cents a pound for wool, but. through the development of our business, the price increased to 40 cents, due largely to the fact that it could be handled at home. Not only did our operations have the effect of stimulating the mar ket, but a material Improvement in the breeding of Angora goats resulted. We bought mohair on a basis of quality whereas this product formerly was bought more with respect to quantity, as many other commodities. Labor la BIb Coat. "But the reduction In tariff removed the protection from American labor, which alone made our operations pos sible, and obliged us to close down our plant and seek another location. Forty five per cent of the cost of our manu factured mohair goods was labor, and when that protection was Interfered with, our only alternative was to quit business, as we could not compete with the manufacturers of England and Germany, who, with their cheap labor, under the Administration's tariff schedule, today can pay the small duty and ship their goods lHto this country for less than it costs the home manu facturer to buy the raw material and convert It Into the finished product. "In contrast with our price of 40 cents per pound the fact that the 1914 clip brought an average price of 27 cents in this state tells its own story of the havoc the Administration's tariff policy has wrought on an important Oregon Industry." DIVORCE COURTS ACTIVE Five Decrees Granted and One Suit Filed Is Day s Record. Five divorces granted and one new divorce suit filed was the record estab lished by the Circuit Court yesterday. Circuit Judge Cleeton signed three de crees and Judge McGinn and Judge Gatens signed one each. Judge Cleeton granted the following decrees: Iola G. Wade irom ay Wade, cruelty; Bertha Abel from Simpson Abel, desertion, maiden name. Bertha Watkins. restored; Iva McCart ney from George K. McCartney, cruel ty, maiden name, Iva Roper, restored. Judge McGinn granted a decree to Mrs. N. Brigga from B. D. Briggs, habitual drunkenness, and gave her the two children. Judc-e Gatens separated Bertha M Ware from William F. Ware and awarded her the two minors, Llia, is and Ivan. 13. Bessie C. Lars-en filed a divorce suit vesterday against Louis Larson, alias Lee Hardy. They were married at Yorkville, 111., in 7884, and she alleges that he deserted her in 1-889. Since that time, she charges, he gave the children 50 cents each in 1896.
