THE MORNING OREGONIAN,
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1914.
ALL'S SET FOR RAGE
PROGRAMME TODAY
Rose City Track, in Fine
Shape, Awaits Dash of
Speedy Horses Here.
MEET TO LAST FOUR DAYS
Opening Programme Includes Two
Pace?.. Trot and Free-for-All.
Contests to Start Promptly.
Fast Time Expected.
The first annual horse-race meeting
tinder the auspices of the Rose City
Epeedway Association will open
promptly at 2 o'clock this afternoon
with a large list of entries. The course
1s in fine shape, there are large entries
of class horses, with the probability
of exceptionally fast time, and all that
Is wanting for the success of the four
days' meet is a good crowd. The size
of the crowd will determine whether
horse racing, so long dominant in Port
land, will take on a new lease of life.
For today's festivities the manage
ment has put out a large programme of
four eventa a 2:25 pace, a 2:25 trot,
a 212 pace and a free-for-all half-mile
dash.
The entries in the first two races
total 13 apiece, with all the good horses
of the North Pacific Circuit entered. In
the third race there are seven entries,
while the entry list for the half-mile
dash will not close until this morning.
Ceatralla's Opening Is Aid.
Had it not been for the closeness of
the opening of the North Pacific cir
cuit at Centralla August 24 it would
not have been possible to obtain the
large number of high-class horses that
are entered.
Fred Merrill and many expert horse
men predict with every degree of cer
tainty that the fastest time made on
the circuit will be eclipsed by that to
be made at the local meet. In the
2:25 pace they look for better than
2:10.
The management has announced that
the races will be run promptly, and
that every endeavor will be made to
finish between 4 and 4:30 o'clock on
the opening day, when the programme
will be a long run.
The races are being run under the
American Trotting Association rules
with the new system in vogue. This
method makes it absolutely necessary
for all the horses to "stay with it" to
have any chance at the money.
Frank Alley Is Judge.
Fred Brooker has been appointed
starter. Frank Alley presiding judge,
with E. A. Parker and Captain David
iiilmore as his assistant judges.
All concessions will be handled by
the management of the association,
with the Intention of doing away once
and for all with the exorbitant charges
that some concessionaires have been in
the habit of charging in times past.
For the half-mile dash five starters
alo,4v (..rtafn with mnro lllfplv
today.
Among the betting men, Indian Hal,
Bed Hal and Rothada at present are
dividing attention in the first race,
while Great Northern and Sidney
"Wilkes are most Inquired after in the
2:25 trot. In the 2:12 pace Bonnie
Antrim, St- Elmo and Prince Zolock
look the best.

HOP PICKING SOON ON
YIELD ABOUT INDEPENDENCE IS
LIKELY TO BE SHORT.
Buyers Already la Field and 18 Cents
la Offered With Options of 20
Cents, hnt Few Taken.
INDEPENDENCE, Or., Aug. 18.
(Special.) Hopplckers are beginning
to arrive in large numbers and it is
expected that all trains will be crowd
ed by the end of the week. Picking
will commence this week in one or
two early yards, but it will not be
generally started before September 1.
The hops show promise of being clean
and of good quality. The hot weather
has worked its damage and it is cer
tain now that there will be more than
three-fourth of a crop. The estimated
crop is 100.000 to 110,000 bales, against
151.000 bales last year.
A number of hop buyers were in the
field today and offers of 18 cents a
pound were freely made. Buyers also
were asking options at 20 cents, but
growers were not inclined to give any
options. They are willing to take
chances with the late market and seem
to think the shipping conditions will
adjust themselves and that prices will
go higher than for a number of years.
STOPPING DANCE UPHELD
Roseburg Council Refuses to Cen
sure Marshal at Pastor's Demand.
ROSE BURG, Or., Aug. 18. (Special.)
The City Council refused laBt night to
censure T. J. Williams, Marshal of

house of St. George's Church, turning
off the electric lights and stopping

against a report submitted by Council
men J. C. Fullerton, Roy Bellows and
H. M. Bullwlnkle. of the committee of
the Council as a whole. Councilmen
Powell. Shaeffer and Hamilton voted
to sustain the action of the Marshal.
Councilmen Fullerton, Bullwlnkle and
Bellows voted against rejecting the re
port. Since Rev. Mr. Baker filed a formal
complaint with the Council several
weeks ago, in which he asked that the
Marshal be renrimanded for his con
duct In breaking up the alleged ' dance."
the Council has wrestled witn the
problem.

She arose without assistance, and an

Except for three severe cuts received

she was uninjured. Her husband's in

In the car, which had been tossed off

The front of tho locomotive showed
marks of a terrific Impact. Steel parts
of the fender were bent and wooden
portions splintered. The automobile
was struck on the axle, the frame was
sprung and the fender crumpled. Other
wise it was uninjured.
The accident happened at 11 o'clock
this morning in view of scores of per
sons awaiting the arrival of the pas

quarter of a mile distant. A boxcar on
a sidetrack and a building shut off Mr.
Cox's view of the approaching train.
