Man Who Surd Dr. Chalmers for

VANCOUVER. Wash.. Aug. 5. Spe
cial.) Albert E. Wlllsher Is In the
county Jail here charged with assault
nith a deadly weapon with attempt
to commit murder. The object of the
nlleged attack was Dr. J. M. T. Chal
mers, who was sued recently by Will-;-her'for
$25,000 for alleged alienation
of Mrs. Wlllsher"s affections.
Willsher is said to have entered the
office of Dr. Chalmers today and
pointed a revolver at the physician.
The men scuffled and Dr. Chalmers ob
tained possession of the revolver. The
police were summoned and Captain
Bitrbeau arrested Willsher. The police
report of the affair says Willsher
snapped the trigger of the pistol twice
in his scuffle with Dr. Chalmers and
that the weapon missed fire. Willsher
may be arraigned tomorrow.
Willsher's suit against Dr. Chalmers
was filed a few weeks ago and sensa
tional charges were made.
Dr. Chalmers is president of the
Clarke County Medical Association
and president of the Clarke County
Automobile Association.
SETTLEMENT IS OFFERED
Company Suing City Willing to Have
Case Adjusted.
The. Hosford Transportation Com
pany, which procured an order for a
new trial from the Supreme Court In
Its suit against the city, has offered
to settle with the city for the amount
of the original claim, J219.95, plus court
costs of $410.90.
The transportation company sued
the city for damages to one of its boats
when the craft Is alleged to have
struck an obstruction in the river, but
the jury returned a verdict in favor
of tha city.

That th title to $100,000,000 of land
in Eastern Oregon is menaced by the
suit of the Pacific Livestock Company
against the State Water Board was a
statement made by Superintendent of
Water Division Cochran. The company
has asked the Federal Court for an in
junction against the State Board ad
judicating water rights in the Sllvles
River for 70.000 acres.
It is alleged by the plaintiff that it
owns 36.000 acres near the river and
that it has rights to water all of it
to a depth of about four feet. The
hearing was set for August 3, in Port
land, but because of the absence of one
of the judges was postponed until Au
A decision for the plaintiff would
affect the title of all irrigated land In
Eastern Oregon," said Mr. Cochran.

"LOAN SHARK" CASES UP
Restraining Order, Even if Granted,

Despite the fact that a suit praying
for a temporary injunction restraining
the District Attorney from enforcing
the provisions of the 1913 law. com
monly known as the "loan shark" act,
has been Instituted, the Multnomah
County grand jury is grinding in the
case of E. E. Ware and will report its
findings later. The merits of the re
straining order asked for have been
fixed for hearing on August 34.
J. Wiesen. owner of the State be
curity Company, brought the action to
prevent the grand Jury from using the
evidence collected In a raid on the loan
company's office in this city. However,
the evidence is being used and it ap
pears likely that the jurors will have
no further use for it by the time the
injunction suit is heard.
MOTHER GOES, BABE LEFT
Woman, Who Said She Sought Work,
Falls to Return.
Leaving her seven-months-old baby
in charge of Mrs. Lola G. Baldwin, of
the Department for the Protection of
Women, Mrs. Violet Patton, 19 years
old, departed for Oregon City last Fri
day, saying she Intended to try to get
work In the woolen mills. She has not
returned, and the baby is in the hands
of the Juvenile Court.
It was learned yesterday that Mrs.
Patton did not apply at the woolen
mills at Oregon City for work. She
had only 40 cents when she left Port
land. The baby Is in the Baby Home. The
mother displayed such affection for the
child Mrs. Baldwin does not believe
she has deliberately abandoned it.
