Reports received here late today from Masatlan aid flghtiBs was in progress there, with no advantage to either side as yet. JIAZATLAN, Met, July 30. The water supply of this beleasrued city Is exhausted and evacuation will begin at any moment. Federal transports are lying- in the harbor to receive the de camping garrison. Under convoy of the gunboat Guer rero, the transports arrived here today. One, the Fesquiera, received a field piece, to cover the shore in case of interference with the operations of evacuation. In ail probability evacuation would now be under way, had it not been that a heavy tropical sauali swept the har bor today, driving ashore the steamship Bonita, which arrived here yesterday loaded with 600 federal troops, women nnd tattle from Lower California. All on board were gotten safely to land, and are now housed in the federal bar racks. General Tellez, commanding, today Bent 60 constitutionalists prisoners of war. as well as the captured crew of the sunken constitutionalist gunboat Tamplco. to General Obregon at Colima. Arrangements have been made to re move all foreigners still residing in Mazatlan to the foreign warships In the harbor. In case of disorders or danger from the constitutionalist Are during evacuation. With the evacuation of this port, the constitutionalists will hold the entire Pacific coast of Mexico, except for Man zanillo, which is still held by the gar rison that evacuated Guaymas. Con stitutionalist troops are pressing it ha rd. SCHOLLS BRIDGEGIVES WAY Washington County May Have Settle for Accident. to SHERWOOD. Or.. July 30. (Special.) . An accident which, it is reported, will cost the county a settlement, occurred at the foot of Coley hill, two miles north of Sherwood, on the Seholls road yesterday, when the bridge across the creek at that place gave way under the weigbt of a threshing engine, allowing the engine to drop to tho creek ten feet below. The engine belonged to Ferd Linger, of Sherwood, and was badly damaged. The bridge, which is on a main traveled road, has been neglecte-d by the county. It Is said, and at the time of the ac cident was in had shape. It was at this spot that a similar accklent oc curred about a year ago. which resulted in the killing of one man and the Injury of two others. OAKLAND ROBBERS ESCAPE JKbur Men Seen Carrying Off Post office Safe and $ 1 12 Is Taken. ROSEBTJRG. Or., July 30. (Special.) No trace has been found of the four thieves who last night robbed the Oak land psstofflce of $112 In cash. It Is thought almost certain that they drove north In cn automobile. The robbery occurred about 1 A. M. Falling to knock the combination from the safe, they dragged it outside, placed it In a pushcart and wheeled It to a creek some distance from the pDStofflce, where It was blown. One man saw the robbers hauling the safe, but he failed to give an alarm. The car In which the robbers ascaped has been In Roseburg for several days and It is thought the men also have been here for some time. Stamps in the safe were not taken. Falling from the Bear Creek bridge at Central Point 20 feet to the rocks below when their team became fright ened at a parasol In a passing car riage. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Horn, of Agate. had a narrow escape from death yesterday. The team backed through the hand Tall on the bridge and fell on the wagon, crushing it. the occupants es caping by falling under the steel seat back, which protected them. Mr. and Mrs. Horn were taken out unconscious and rushed to the hospital, where the doctors declare both will recover. Aside from bruises and scratches the horses were uninjured. "Seven Sisters" Count Progresses. OLiYMPIA. Wash.. July 30. The final count on the first of the "Seven Sis ters" Initiative petitions was begun to day, that jo measure No. 6, the so called "blue sky law." The petitlona will be checked in numerical order. It Is expected to take three days to com plete the seven counts. SARAH CHASE CASES. Woman'i Defeat Thnn Far In Court Gives Hope That Issues May at Last Be Settled. OREGON CITY. Or., July 30. (Spe cial.) After more than a year of liti gation, invulvlng two hearings before the State Supreme Court and several injunctions and suits in the Circuit Court, the legal tangle between the city and Mrs. Sarah A. Chase may be settled by a compromise. Almost two years ago J12.000 was voted to build an elevator on Seventh street connecting the business district with the residence suction on tne nign ianas Mrs. Chase has fought every step taken since, as the landing would cross her property. A Jury In the Circuit Court valued the land at $1600, but Mrs. Chase re fused the money. If a compromise is reached, it may be along the following lines: That the walk through the property be nar rowed; that her request to move the parking on High street be granted, and that the city pay $1600 for the strip. At the Council meeting last night a committee consisting of Councilmen Albright, Meyer and Long was ap pointed to interview Mrs. Chase on the Darklnir suggestion, but It was not j until this afternoon that It became known that tne scope or cne coiinim tee's activity had been Increased. No conference between the committee and the attorneys for Mra. Chase was held today. FRANCHISE AMENDMENT UP Milwaukee Measure Provides 5 -Cent Fares and Part of Earnings. MILWAUKIE. Or., July 30 (Spe cial.) The amended franchise for right to construct In Milwaukle the street railway of U. H. Campbell will come up for consideration at a special meet ing of the Council Friday night. A 25 year franchise is asked for. A common-user provision has been inserted. Five-cent fares for single trips and 25 tickets for $1 for adults and 20 tickets for 60 cents for school children, are stipulated. If the line is extended lo Portland or If the line Is absorbed by a .railroad company the 5-cent faro must be maintained. Work on the railway must be started within 60 days after the date of the acceptance of the franchise, if the amendment is accepted, and the lines must be In operation within 18 months after the ordinance goes into eltect. The company is required to pay illl waukie $200 annually. CHANGE OF VENUE ASKED Builston Prisoner Accused of Mur dering Mother-ln-Law Pleads. DALLAS, Or., July 30. (Special.) Louis Davis, accused of the murder of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Eliza J. Stew art, at Ballston, July 30. 1913. asked for change of venue today. The pris soner wants to be tried in Marlon County, where Davis now awaits fur ther action by the Polk County Court. Davis sets forth that threats were made against him. that petitions cir culated over Polk County, urging state prison authorities not to parole or par don him, and that a trial in Marlor County will be less expensive than in Polk County. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court and reversed, and a new trial was ordered, owing to erroneous in structions given to the Jury. BUG ATTACKS LANE BEANS Dry Weather Also Eactor In Hurt ing Record Crop. EUGENE, Or.. July 30. (Special.) Although Lane County will harvest a record crop of beans this year, dry weather and a mysterious bug will re duce the yield to half, according to J. O. Holt, manager of the Eugene Fruit Growers' Association. According to the statement of farmers, who are praying for rain for all crops, this is the dryest Summer experienced in Lane County for years. Scores of wells have gone dry. The bug which is attacking the beans for the first time since this product has become a commercial -product here Is a long shaped insect with specks on its back. As near as it can be traced scientifically, It is not listed as a dan gerous bug. iOPPICKERS GALORE APPLY Applicants at Salem Most Numerous in History This Season. SALEM, Or., July 30. (Special.) Hopgrowers report that the number of men, women and children who have ap plied for work picking hops this year !s larger than ever before. Hundreds have applied in perso- and many more oy letter and through friends. As a re suit a number of growers have already employed all the pickers they will need. A policy of keeping pickers busy all day will be adopted by leading grow ers this year. Heretofore In many of the yards so many persons were em ployed that the dryers were filled early In the afternoon and work was stopped This plan caused more or less discon tent among pickers and resulted in de creased ranks. LOST MAN,90, IS FOUND La Center Resident Wanders Less Than Half Mile Two Days. LA CENTER, Wash., July 30. (Spe cial.) "Grandpa" Lyons, 90 years old, wandered from his home about two miles north of here Sunday, and al though he went less than half a mile, he was not found until Tuesday. An all night and day search was made, but not until the cows of a nearby farmer shied away from a spot in his field as they were being driven through the field Tuesday morning was Mr. Lyons located. He was carried to his home and Dr. Lasater found him in a weak con dition, but there are good chances for his recovery. Beaverton Has Revival. BEAVERTOX. Or., July 80. (Spe cial.) In spite of the warm weather, the evangelistic meetings opened here by Rev. Harry Scriver have drawn large crowds at every service. The first of the series was held in the Con gregational Church. His last two ser mons on "The Old Time Religion," and "The Religion of Jesus of Nazareth" have been among the most effective of the meetings. Postmaster at Lamar, Wash., Named. Henry Schucknect, presiding elder, who spoke words of welcome. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 10 o'clock Bish op William Horn delivered addresses on Bible topics. His morning lectures will be features of tho campmeetlng and conventions. Sunday appointments are: At 11 A. M. Bishop Horn will preach in Eng lish; at 2 P. M. in the German language, and at 3 P. M. he will lecture on the topic, "Growth of the Reformation." The Women's Missionary convention will be held Monday, the Young Peo ple's Alliance Tuesday, and the Sun day School League Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs. J. B. Meetings are "elng hcd In the tabernacle. A restaurant was opened on the ground yesterday. A large attendance Is expected. MAYORALTY IS WON BACK Circuit Court Holds P. A. Livesloy, of Woodlrurn, Is Entitled to Office. SAJJEM, Or.. July 30. (Special.) Circuit Judgre Benson, of Klamath Falls, has decided that P. A. Llvesley Is Mayor of Woodburn. The decision was received today by the clerk of the Marion Circuit Court. Judgre Benson presided at the hearing at the request of Circuit Judge Kelly. Mr. Llvesley and J. R. Bandon were aspirants for the Mayoralty at the last election, Mr. Bandon receiving a major ity of five votes. Llvesley alleged that his opponent was not a citizen of the United States, and succeeded in having Landon ousted from office. D. A. Mc- Kee sued to have Uvesley ousted, al leging that the courts did not have jurisdiction. Judge Benson held to the contrary and also that Llvesley was entitled to the office. Polk's Court Grist Biff; DAX.LAS, Or., July 30. (Special.) Judge Webster Holmes will preside over the August term of Circuit Court here Monday. More than fourteen criminal eases are to be disposed of, the greatest number ever handled in this county at one term, except when the county wag "dry" and numerous bootlegging cases were tried.
