5 THE MORNING OREGONTAN. THURSDAY, JULY 30, 1914. HIGH PRICES RULE Wheat Market Loses None of Its Strength. FARMERS HOLDING FIRM Less Excitement Prevails In North west, trat Buyers Are. Still Keen for Grain In Spite of Reactions Elsewhere. There was not as much excitement In the North-western wheat market yesterday on the preceding day. but the market lost none of It. .trensth. Buying quieted down In a material degree. This was not only because dealers were more wary in view of the re cessions In the distant markets, but ths farmers had much to do with the slacken log of trad. All are apprised now of the situation abroad, and bullishness In the ex treme prevails In the selling sections. While a number of the larger buyers de clined to venture farther on the advancing market, all did not withdraw, and agents of Coast firms were busy at country points taking in what wheat was offered. Club was quoted at S1H cent and forty-fold at ;u cents, and It Is safe to say that every thing available at these prices found a buyer ready to take It. There was, of course, much uncertainty in the market. Everything hinges on the de velopment, of the next day or tVo. but In the meantime buyers are not idle Lntli there is assurance of a peaceful settlement of the Servian affair or at least proof it will be localised, the market Is expected t maintain all of Its present strength. There was a rumor yesterday of the sale of a small cargo of club and forty-fold a. 7s d. The name of the ship was not given anjl the rumor lacked verification. It "as said the sale was made on the early excitement, and that the deal conuld not be repeated. CLOSING TONE STRONG Investors Seize Opportunity to Make Kxtensivc Purcliases at Bargain Prices Kstablished by TuesdMy'is Break. NEW YORK, July 29. The local stock exchange was almost the only market of Importance at home or abroad to preserve Its stability, though at times, especially In the initial trading, storm signals were In evidence as a result of the seml-paralysls manifested by London and Berlin. Latest developments in the Servian situa tion caused the British and French markets practically to withdraw from all active op erations, while other European exenanges. including Frankfort and Hamburg, deemed It expedient to follow the course of Am sterdam. Vienna, Madrid and Montreal, which suspended business sltogether. An unusual feature of the London mar ket wa. the merely nominal quotations posted for many American Issues, while those In which transactions uctually were made declined two to Ave points. Opening prices here were inclined to fol low London's lead, hut a sudden reversal followed an active buying movement of Canadian Pacific for Berlin. The closing was strong. An Important factor In the advance here was the extensive purchases credited to in vestors, an element which has long been lacking In the financial district. To the buying of this character might be added the substantial support accorded by leading banking Interests. Bonds fluctuated widely, showing less re cuperative ability than stocks Total sales, par value, $3,275,000. United States coupon Is gained H per cent on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. ReDorted bv J.
