The large-sized mane Job oi hutting out those rlp-roarlnK Beavers was accomplished in Oakland taday by Charles Spider Baum, much to the en joyment of a large gathering of spec tators who seem to realize that Port land is mueb in the pennant chase. It was no walkover, however, as the final score of 3 to 0 would Indicate, and that does not truly Illustrate hjw close It was. The northmen contested right up to the last marker, and sensational fielding by Jerry Downs. Corhan and Howard figured prominently on the defense. . With all due respect to the assort ment of baffling hooks and "P1"" served by Spider Baum. the air-tight support rendered by the Seals was one of the game's features. VlVlCE AND OAKLAND DIVIDE Venetians Stay at Top or League With 4-to-l Score In First. LOS ANGELES. July 23. Venice kept Its position at the head of the Coast League list today by winning the first game of a doubleheader from Oakland. 4 to 1. Oakland annexed the second contest, 5 to 4. "Cack" Henley held the Oaks to four bits tn the first game, while his team mates grot 11 off Prough and Killilay. Bayless got a single, double and a home run out of four times at bat. Roy Hitt'n no-run. no-hit reputation, gained Sunday, railed to impress the Oakland batters in the second game, for they pounded him hard. Scores: F-rat gams: though neither Pitchers Malarkey nor Ryan could stand the heat to go the full route today. Sacramento oullt up a safe enough lead off Ryan and added enough from Relief Pitcher Musser to register a 6 to 3 win over Los Angeles, giving the locals two out of three games for the week thus far. This Is the first time this year that Sacramento has won more than one game a week from the Angela Young, an outfielder In place of Shlnn, prac tically saved the game for the Wolves by a wonderful running catch of Pinch Hitter Meek's eighth-Inning drive. Metzger was caught on a double play by the catch. Score: Los Angeles I Sacramento BHOAE B H O A k.
