Holding Wheat at Prices Above
Market.
TRADING ON SMALL SCALE
Growers In Pendleton and Walla
Walla Districts Demand 70
Cents Xet Exporters An
ticipate Lower Values.
Nearly all the dealers are In the market
for wheat, but not at the prlcee that grow
ata ara asking. Farmers in the Pendleton
and tvalla Walla districts are holding for
7) cents net, which Is more than millers or
exporters can afford to pay. While some
wheat has been bougnt at 70 and even at 71
cents to fill Jnly sales, buyers decline to
psy these prices for later delivery.
A cargo of white Walla Walla and ship
ping bluestem wss sold yesterday at 35s d.
which la equal to 8014 cents f. o. b. on SOs
freights. On this showing. It Is evident that
prices In Europe will have to Improve or the
market quotations in this territory recede.
Grain men declare they will not be able to
to much business until this occurs.
Local wheat prices are now on a level
with Chicago and out of range with the Eu
ropean consuming markets. The canal will
not be open for commercial traffic prob
ably until the first of the year, and lower
freight rates cannot be expected in the
meantime. The export flour business In
sight Is small and no early California trade
Is anticipated. For these reasons, and be
cause of the liberal buying of American
wheat that Europe has already done, grain
men believe that prices must go to a lower
level in the Northwest.
In discussing the question of how much
wheat has been sold for export, an Eastern
grain authority writes:
"Estimates vary greatly. Some of the
large sales reported may be more psy
chological than real. Clearances from the
seaboard will tell the tale. One of the
largest grain firms In the United States,
which has the reputation of'knowlng every
thing before it happens, hesitates about
going on record as to the amount of ex
port sales of wheat which have been made
this season. It says: This Is too hard a
cues for us to make. It is pretty big. but
snybody guessing Is apt to be a great many
millions off, and we do not even care to
try If
"Another large exporter who has the repu
tation of doing the most via the Gulf ports
riw-.-i the largest estimate. He says: 'It Is
a very difficult question to answer, but If
we were compelled to make a kucss we
would feel like estimating the amount of
wheat worked for export so far to be not
far frjm 75.000.000 bushels. Both Chicago
and the Gulf ports have worked very large
quantities.
"Another large Chicago firm, which ex
ports freely, says: 'A rough estimate for
Ju!. August and September would be 00 to
7.. millions. The amount of ocean freight
and lake tonnage contracted clear into the
four months has been on an enormous scale,
but figures on the same aro Impossible to
el.- "
Portland dealers yesterday quoted clubat
7S cents track and red at 77 cents. It was
declared there should be more than 1 cent
difference between fife and club, aa there Is
ni'trfc red than club wheat and less demand
for it. Europe buys our white wheat to
ml with red wheat from other countries,
and 3-cent differential was suggested as
nej'rer right.
No trade of consequence was reported In
the coarse grains. The demand for oats Is
poor, but farmers arc holdiug for full prices
In spfte of the good crop outlook. Not much
apot hurley Is available.

t'onfnsliicr Reports Regarding Eastern
Freight Hate Sitnatlon Bond
Prices Hold Strong.
NEW YORK, July 20. Confusing reports
regarding tne Eastern freight rate situation
and a budget of unfavorable rumors from
abroad contributed toward today's drooping
stock market.
Conditions abroad Indicated increased ten
sion at ail prominent Continental points,
particularly Berlin and Vienna. London's
final prices for Americans were substan
tially lower. In addition to the 15.000
shares sold here for London, direct sales
for Amsterdam were also reported. Balti
more & Ohio common and preferred de
scended to new low levels. Heavy offer
ings of both issues for future delivery at
tested the persistency of the foreign liquida
tion in thes.i shares. Erie and Wheeling .fc
Lake Erie broke new low ground.
Texas Company was the most prominent
of the specialties, dropping five, points as
a result of the suits against the company
promised by on or more Houthwestem
states.
Anthracite shares were under pressure and
St. Paul fell a point on tlie poor crop dis
patches from its territory, with, similar
heaviness in Canadian Pacific. Union Pa
cific, minus Its extra dividend, was one of
the few strong stocks, but fell back at
tha close.
Bonds were but slightly affected by the
sagging tendency In stocks. Total salas.
par value, $1,307,000. L'nlted States bonds
.were unchanged on call.

MARKET STRONG AT CLOSE
Canad-iHii Crop Estimated at 75,

Year Chicago Receipts Are
Largest on Record.
CHICAGO. July 20. Assertions that if un
favorable weather was encountered in the
Dakotas and Minnesota this week, the
damage from black rust would be grave
led to a decided rally today in the wheat
market. Prices closed strong at o to
ic net advance. Corn finished
c to 0c up. and oats with a gain
of c to c, but provisions unchanged
to 13c down. .
Wheat speculators at first were disposed
to believe that the favorable conditions
for maturing the Spring crop would outrun
the danger of black rust. The bears also
had in their favor the fact that receipts
here from the new Winter crop amounted
to a huge aggregate, 1S31 carloads, said to
be tho largest total on record. In addition
there was a big Increase of the domestic
visible supply. Additional encouragement
for the bulls came from estimates that the
Canadian crop would prove 75.000,000 bushels
less than last year.
Uneasiness over a renewal of drouth com
plaints from Missouri and Southern Bltnols
carried the corn market upgrade. A big
falling off in the visible supply counted also
against the bears, and so. too. pessimistic re
ports regarding the outlook for shipments
from Argentina.
Oats ranged higher, influenced mainly by
the strength of corn.
Although provisions opened firm in sym
pathy with the hog market, a break In
prices followed. Selling on the bulge was
aid to be due to signs of more liberal ar
rivals tomorrow at the yards.
