THE MORNTXG OREGOXIAN, WEDNESDAY, JUET 15, 1914. V STAPLE WOOLS GONE Supplies in Eastern Oregon Are Now Exhausted. LAKEVIEW IS CLEARED UP maroes are selling on the street at 60 cents to $1.25 a box. CONDITION Ten-Year OF ALL CROPS IS HIGH Only Stock Remaining Is in Willam ette Valley and This Is Fast Be ing Disposed Of Attvances at London Sales. Except for a few email stray clip at scattered points Eastern Oregon is cleaned up of 111 wool. The Southern Oregon supply has also passed out of flnst hands. Practically ali the wool that la left In the state now la In the Willamette Valley, and the quantity remaining there is small. Growers are holding but little of It. and country merchants' stocks are much re duced. Buying In that section has been fairly active In the past week at unchanged prices, ranging from lSVi to 20 cents, according to fineness. The Eastern buyers have all left the state, and the home firms are closing up their accounts. The wool markets everywhere are hold Ing firm. In the East prices are no higher. but the market has undeniably been strengtened by the higher prices paid at the London July sales. Transactions In Western wools at Boston during the past week Included a considerable quantity of Oregon Valley wool at private terms. On lot of about 500,000 pounds of Utah was sold at a clean cost of about 56 cents and a good-sized lot of Idaho original wool run nlns largely to half-blood is reported sold at a clean basis approximating 60 centa. Some graded fine medium Idaho Is also reported at cents In the grease, and 50. 000 pounds of three-eighths Wyoming at 24 cent.- In the grease. A small quantity of half-blood and fine medium clothing Colo rado wool was sold on a basis of about 5 4 cents clean and some New Mexican original brought 5L'53 cents, while Wyoming fine original Is said to have sold at about 58 to 60 cents. Commenting on the London auction the Boston Commercial Bulletin says: "The expected has happened at London. General predictions were that prices would advance 5 per cent on metlnos. and they have shown fully that much appreciation, ranging generally from 1 to 2 cents dearer than last cales. while fine cross-breds have shown a similar appreciation. Coarse and low medium crosbreds are reported firm and unchanged. American operators are taking less wool this series than last. Aa a matter of fact the supply of American style wools Is of coarse much smaller than at the previous sale. The supply of me rlnos is very limited. Of the total offerings of Kb.Ooo bales, about 107. 00O bales offered were New Zealand wools, thus leaving relatively small offering of fine wools. In cluding scoured and greasy Capes. Of Now Zealand wools. It Is estimated that there are some 15.000 to 20.000 bales of scoured wool, the Caputonfa offerings alone amount ing to some 3000 or 4000 bales, and when to these is added 1 a considerable propor tion of sliped wools, the total offering of choice greasy fine crossbreds Is seen to be rather small also." They came from Tasmania, where the seasons are the re verse from this count ry. The samples showed the southern hemisphere hops to resemble closely those of the Pacific Coast. They were picked exceedingly clean. The Tas mania crop this year Is 3000 bales short of last year. The entire crop has passed out of growers' hands and the market is 4 cents higher than at the opening. All the hops grown in Tasmania are consumed in Australia. No business Is passing this week in the local hop market. Poultry Receipts Are Larger. Receipts of poultry were larger yester day than for several days. The market was somewhat easier, and a clcan-up price of 13 cents was made on hens. Dressed meats were steady. There was no change In the egg situation, beyond more complaint of the luality of current receipts. Butier and cheese sold at the new quo tations announced in this column yesterday morning. Wheat buying bat slowed down materially. So far as could be learned, few quotations were sent Into the country yesterday. Most dealers were inclined to consider 77 cents as the outside price of new club. Mill buying: was not in evidence, and oriental purchasers Indicated much lower prices. A good many farmers are disposed to sell, but they are asking the prices that were cur rent a week or ten days ago. Trading in the other cereal lines was equally dull. The flour market In Manchuria la at present dull, writes Vice-Consul Q. C. Han son, of Dalny. The general failure of the crops in North and South Manchuria and the decline of small silver coins have caused a business depression and a falling-off in demands for flour. The overstocked mar ket has forced the owners to sell their stocks. The buyers are looking forward to a further decline in price and are buying only what is necessary to meet the Imme diate need. The existing dull spell may linger for a few months. The standard of Hvlnr of the Chinese masses in South and North Manchuria has been steadily im proving during recent years, and now there is only a amall part of the poorer classes who do not use flour as a staple foodstuff. Therefore there is no reason to believe that the demand for flour will decrease in the long run. Local receipts. In cars, were reported by the Merchants Exchange aa follows: Wheat. Barley. Flour. Several bear raids were attempted, but they were mostly abortive, except in the caso of New Haven. which fell to a new low record of o4Vi. recovering about half the loss. The following summary of the weather and Its results for the week ending Jaly 18, on the condition of the principal crops in Oregon, is baaed upon Investigations made by a number of correspondents reporting to the local office of the weather bureau: The week was dry and warm in the western counties, except during the last two days it was cloudy and cooler. In the eastern counties there were poorly dis tributed showers, which In some localities were heavy, accompanied by hall, and con sequently destructive. No damaging tem peratures occurred. Fall grain is maturing rapidly and its harvest is being pushed. Where the show ers were heaviest considerable Fall grain was lodged, but most of It will recover again, so the loss will be small. The crop i very good. Spring sown grain needs more rain, especially in the western counties. Haying has commenced in Central Oregon, and In other parU of the state the hay crop has been mostly harvested or else it ts in shock and left to dry and ripen. The hay crop on the whole is extra good. Hops, corn, potatoes and fruit are doing well, and the general outlook continues satis factory so far as the staple crops are con cerned. WATERMELON PRICE IS REDUCED Teat Cars Arrive Daring Day Receipts of Peaches Light. Ten cars of watermelons reached Portlamd yesterday. Most of these were disposed ot on out-of-town orders. The local supply, however, proved too heavy In view of the cooler weather, and the price was reduced 25 centa & hundred. Melons are scarce In the south, and as local stocks will soon clean up, the market is expected to recover by Thursday. Outside of melons, fruit arrivals were light. Receipts of peaches were the small est for several days. Fancy Southern Ore gon Triumphs offered at 7309O cents. A car of Wenatchee apricots was received. A car of Malaga grapes will be in tonight. Thar are packed In clusters and will sell at S3 a box. The banana train arrived last night. Two cars of tomatoes arrived, one from canto and the othar (can asUL To- Frults and Vegetables.
