TPTE MOBTTOfG OREGONTAN, WEDNESDAY, JTTLT 15, 1914. 15 VERDICT 'GUILTY IN FRIARS' CLUB CASE B. Barish, VJ. and J. Wilbur Are Found to Have Sold Liquor to Minor. GIRLS' STORIES CONVINCE Witnesses Assert Stranger Could Be. come Member or "Club" in Five Minutes for $1 and Farci cal Ceremony, OREGON CITY, Or., July 14. (Spe cial.) 'Guilty as charged in the Indict ment" was the verdict of the Jury in the 'Friars' Club case" against B Barish, TV. Wilbur and J. Wilbur, on a charge of selling liquor to a minor. The Jury came In with their verdict at :10 o'clock after going out at B:3o o'clock this evening. Circuit Judge Campbell gave the defendants ten days in which to file notice of appeal. District Attorney Hedges based his case on the testimony of Esther Gibson, Josephine Gerhart and Marian Hoffman ' The complaint charged that the three ffirls secured liquor at the r riars liuo between 1:30 and 4 o clock on tne morn fnsr of Sunday. May 17. John Ditchburn. attorney for the defense, attempted to prove that the three girls were not at the club that night, and introduced two waiters and several Portland men, I..im1ns T T n VlhUv and Dr TjOnST f who testified that they did not see the three girls in the place. Night's Adventures Told. The adventures of the night of May 16 were brought out in the trial. Ac cording to the story which each of the girls told, they "picked up" the three men, who are not known to the local authorities and who were not known to the girls at the time, early in the evening on the streets of Port land. After they had been together a short time, one of the girls sug gested that they go to a certain grill and "have a good time." The party stayed at the grill until closing hours, when a taxi was secured and the six went to the Friars' Club. This far in the testimony there was no dispute. The defendants maintained that the girls and their escorts were denied admittance because they were trunk and because the men were not "members of the club. The girls testi fied that they were admitted to the club about 1:30 o'clock In the morning and that they stayed there until about 4 o'clock, when Dr. Long and several others took them home, their original I escorts having deserted them. Club's Methods Aired. Many of the alleged methods of the elub were aired by District Attorney Hedges. The defense claimed that the club had a membership of 800 and that no person was admitted into the grounds unless he could show a card. Attorney Hedges Introduced witnesses to prove that "a stranger could become a member of the club in five minutes." All that was necessary was the II in itiation fee and the recommendation of two other members was declared to be a farce. Attorney Hedges also attempted to prove that the club had agreements with taxicab companies "to bring par ties to the club. The statement was made several times by Attorney Hedges In his address to the Jury that the club ecured the patronage of those who had been sent from Portland grills after midnight and that the principal time for business was In the early morning hours. Attorney Ditchburn for the defense attempted to attack the character of the three girls who formed the leading witnesses for the state. Their motive for testifying as they dW today was, he aid, to secure the pity and forgiveness of their parents. VETERANS TGHAVE PICNIC General Good Time Expected at Peninsula Outing Today. If all subscriptions that citizens of Portland have pledged to the 1914 Rose Festival are paid in. the present board of commissioners will be able to turn over a substantial cash balance when they retire from office, besides several thousand dollars worth of machinery, decorations and other properties which represent a permanent investment. This was shown at the annual meet ing of tho commissioners held last night by the daily balances for July 13. Election of officers of the association for the coming year was postponed, since it was the unanimous opinion of the commissioners that the popularity of the Rose Festival and its strength and continual novelty will be best con served by the succession each year of an entirely new board of commission ers to Its direction.
