aaaawaH 15 THE SrOTOftNO OREGONIAN, TUESDAY. JULY 14, 1914. SEASON MAY BE LafE No Demand Yet From Orient for American Flour. CLAIM STOCKS TOO LARGE Snippers Believe Market May Be Month Late In Opening Pros pect of Lower Prices Not go Certain. A late opening of tha export flour season U anticipated. In former years the market opened about August 1. but ahlppera believe that this year the demand will not ba pro nounced until well Into September, and some look for It to bo delayed until October. Up to tha present time thsre haa been practi cally no inquiry from ths Orient for flour. The-reason given la the large atocka on the ether aide and tha expectation that with our big wheat crop new flour prlcea will be lower. Whether thla will be the caae re mains to be aeen. As for the Oriental stocks, they are likely soon to show a ma terial reduction, aa but little buying for that account has been done for several months. Reporting on conditions In Asia, the Kpbe Chronicle says: "It was recently reported that about 1.000.000 bags of flour were congesting the market In Manchuria. We now read In the Asabl that the market In Japan Is also heavily congested with stocks. About 400, 000 bags of Imported flour and a smaller quantity of Japanese flour are awaiting buy era at Kobe, and abont 850,000 bags of Im ported flour and about 150.000 bags of the Japanese product are glutting the Shlmon osekl market. Thns about 1,350,000 bags are on the market at Kobe and Shlmonosekl. without reckoning tha atocks at other porta. "Such an enormous congestion of the flour market has not been seen for years past. The low prce of rice and oarley has checked the sale of flour, which has also declined In price In turn. Until recently the standard quotation of Imported flour ruled at fl.87 per bag and the Japanese product at 31.32, prices which barely covered expenses, but on imported flour sellers had to lose I0.0T or mors on every bag. "On May 8 the dealers In the Kwanto market. In view of the anticipated success ful wheat harvest in America, and the do cline In freights, lowered the price of all qualities of flour by 5 cents. The Kwantai dealers followed suit and made the standard rate of the Japanese product $1.27, with the result that the difficulties of the Japanese flour millers have been added to." A Hi cunt decline In butter prices will be effective this morning. The new quotation ob city, creamery, firlsll will lie 29 cents, One of the creameries put out this quota tion yesterday and it will be general today. The general make of butter throughout the valley Is falling off, but the city market has been weakened by the unloading here of a large quantity of off-grade country butter. Much of this Inferior butter Is the consequence of handling a poor grade of cream during the recent warm spell. Coun try cubes have offered at unusually low prices, some of them selling down to 19H cents. The all-around reduction should en able the market to clean up and regain Its former healthy tone. Cheese prices were reduced half a cent yesterday. The Eastern cheese markt has weakened and the Tillamook manufacturers had to come down to meet It. NEW YORK, July 13. Continued selling of securities, a goodly part of which was be lieved to represent liquidations, caused fur ther unsettlement in the stock market to day The movement differed from that of last week In that It affected most of the high-grade Issues. A noteworthy feature was the persistent offering of Canadian Pacific, wnicn wag 6e most active stock for the greater part. It sustained a net loss ol 4ii points. United States Steel was another leader to decline under the weight of heavy offerings, and Union Pacific, the coalers and metal shares yielded from one to two points. New Haven and other issues of the same class were again weak, the former declining to its recent low record, while some of the Goulds, Ontario & Western. Western Mary land, and Toledo, St. Louis & Western added to their recent severe losses. Prices rallied fractionally in the final dealings, probably as a result of short cov ering, but trading became dull and the tone at tho close was weak, New Haven, how ever, reflecting some buying London was a moderate buyer here, de spite dull conditions at home. .Purls was observing a holiday, and Berlin prlceB were lower. Renewed weakness was reported from Vienna. Money rates were nominally higher, last Saturday's low clearing house reserves caus ing a number of local banks to remain out of the market. In the bond list, half score of low-priced Issues lost from two to 10 H points, the lat ter being the extent of the decline In one of the New Haven subsidiaries. Total sales, par value, $937,000.
