THE MORNING OREGOXIAN. THITRSDAY, JULY 9, 1914. ' ' 13 V k SECRET GBUSADE Ofl wiyor Palmer, of Baker, Hires I His Own Detective. CAFE OWNER IS FINED $200 Professional 'Informer,' as Dancing Master, Buys Illegally - Sold Liquor and Produces Kind of Evidence That Convicts. BAKER. Or.. July 8. (Special) Maytjr Palmer has started a secret moral crusade all of his own and It la already showing- results. On evidence of Ramon "Vallare, em ployed by the Mayor secretly to get evidence In Illegal liquor selling: and kindred violations of the law, support ex K either witnesses who upheld Val- lare'a testimony, Frank Kuranlshi, proprietor of the Elks' cafe, Main street, was convicted of selling; liquor without a license, in Municipal Court, this afternoon, and was fined $200. He was released, pending- appeal. Vallare testified he had been em ployed by. the Mayor to investigate Just such cases and that the Elks' cafe case is one only of many similar cases in which he has obtained evidence. Some of these, he said, would come to trial. Others, he said, had learned that they were under investigation and had left town. He cited one woman, who, he said, was conducting a disorderly house and who had left. The particu lar cases against the Elks' cafe were for alleged misdemeanors of the early morning of July 3 and June 7. Vallare, a professional "informer," showed himself an adept at his task, in marked contrast with Special Agent Richards. sent, hero last Fall by Gov ernor West, whose "evidence" con. aisted of blunt assertions and proof. Vallare came here from Idaho, where he had done similar work. He took up work as a dancing master and in every case has worked with local per eons as corroborative witnesses. He and other witnesses testified that they had bought the liquor in the unlicensed place, once at 1:30 A. M. and again on Sunday. They had the beer -in evi dence and gave testimony showing it had not been bought elsewhere. Vallare said that he had been do ing similar investigating for a Sheriff in Idaho and that he had come here Fix weeks ago, studied conditions and then gone to the Mayor and had been employed to be paid an unnamed sum. Ho said that so far he had been fur nished $67 by Mayor Palmer for two weeky expense nwney. New Photo Plays Open jrajestic. STRENGTH without love may he misguided. This is the philosophy upon which "Daughters of Men," a wonderful tlve-part drama at the Majestic Theater, is founded. The eternal inequality between the rich and the poor, the time-old struggle between capital and labor and the jealousy of two women over one man are depicted In this thrilling photoplay. The scene between the two women, the girl labor-leader and the handsome young society woman, Bhows how wo men's petty grievances and Jealousies may be adjusted by the application of a little philosophy and understanding. Matters went from bad to worse until, through the efforts of two kind old men and a young one with an understanding of human nature, a strike was settled and employes satisfied. Sonny Jim "is there" in "The Boy and the Circus." Hearst-Sellg news pictorial concludes the picture offering. Mme. Othick sings some well-selected songs. Star. THE strength of the weak, the weak ness of the mighty, the courage of love and the dare-deviltry of patriot Ism are combined in "Captain Alvarez," a six-part Vitagraph photoplay at the Star Theater. This film, rivaling the "Million Bid" In popularity, is credited by critics with being one of the most stupendous productions ever conceived. For the cause of the down-trodden of Argentina, Robert Walnwrigrht, a young American, allies himself with the revo lutionists. He is watched by Tirzo, the dreaded spy of Rosas, the tyrant ruler. Both Tirzo and Wainwright are in love with Bonita, the beautiful niece of Son Arana, a secret sympathizer with the revolutionists, although a Federal officer. Under the name of Alvarez,- the American-leads i .the. revolutionary troops to victory. By clever ruses he beats Tirzo and catches Rosas in his own traps and stands forth as the savior of the republic. Columbia. "R.LTJB KNOT- Klsa OF POIX." a D society drama by the American Players, which opened at the Columbia yesterday, contains a sensational polo game between the California and Hawaiian players. "Blue Knot," the beautiful polo pony around which the plot of the story is built, is ridden in this game by Elmer Boeseke. The etory concerns two brothers who are rivals for the love of a beautiful so ciety girl. There are many sensational features In "The Leap in the Dark," the third episode of "The Million Dollar Mys tery." The conspirators conclude that Hargreaves has escaped from the bal loon which dropped into the ocean with his money. They are caught in a trap set for them by Norton, the newspaper reporter, and all captured excepting Bra tne, the leader. ."The Eaves - Dropper," , a Keystone comedy, offers the embarrassing situa tion of a man caught flitting by his wife. The All-Star Trio sang mapy nightly entertaining selections. Globe. F:OM ' time Immemorial, woman, when she wants to be, can be woman's worst enemy, which has given rise to the phrase "Woman's inhuman ity to woman," in the powerful photo play now on at the Globe Theater, Kleventh and Washington, "Woman Against Woman." A woman in love with the affianced of another works the mischief. Not daring to attempt the ruin of the woman she wants to despoil, she uses the sister of the girl as her victim, wall knowlnsr that the ruin of the sis ter will be equally felt by the one she seeks to humiliate. By the death of the father, the two girls are thrown on their own resources, the temptress lures them to New York, worms her self into their good graces and then lays her plan. She has not reckoned, on the strength of her real foe, who brings home to the false one the full responsibility. An excellent comedy Is "Back to the Simple Life."
