Elmer Rieger gave a lion-hearted ex hibition of pitching; yesterday at Mc Credie Park. The ex-St. Paul youth held tho Seals to four hits, throttled them 3-0, and, incidentals, boosted Portland into the first division for the first time since mid-April. Roger's twirling. Derrick's batting, some nifty fielding stunts by Speas and Poane and Pernolls failure again to stop the ravaging Beavers contributed to a happy afternoon for 2000 fans. Pernoll was nicked for only seven hits, but three of these were tucked Into one inning and three runs clinched the game. 3 , Derrick's two-bagger scored two of the runs, following a walk to Rieger and Doane's single. Rodgers brought Derrick in with a poke past third. All this happened in the third inning, with two out, and had Rabbit Mun dorff correctly Judged Derrick's liner to deep center field possibly some of It might not have jumped in to jar the fat man's equanimity. Shot Hard to Gauge. It was a difficult shot to guage on the instant, however, and there is a possibility that he could not -have reached it anyway. The victory in this opening game of the series gives the Beavers the very excellent record of eight victories in the last ten games. Some of the more intrepid fans are even wondering 'if Portland Is to pull off a repetition of Its 1911 performance, when it loafed along until the last week In June and then Jumped Into the first division by winning seven in eight from Oakland. Suffice to know that Portland's most recent win, with Oakland's defeat for Venice, narrows the margin between the Beavers and the Angelic leaders to two and one-half games. Past History Recalled. On July S, 191S, Los Angeles was also topping the bunch, but the margin over the McCredieltes was four and one half contests. Rleger's victory yesterday, by an odd coincidence, carbons his team's win ning record. He has chalked up eight victories in 10 starts, not so bad for a man who originated at St. Paul. v. m th fifth Innlnsr did the f.h!-hittlnr Seals register a safe blow, and Del Howard was the man to set an example. In the fourth Rieger fanned three Seals in a row. But, if the Seals could not hit, they could field, and two neat double plays were inserted in the box score. One of these did not suit the fancy of Ul sterlte John Buddy Ryan and he told Umpire Held so in the best of golfing terms. v Forthwith Buddy was sent to the clubhouse and Lober finished the last two Innings in the outfield.
