It was & beautiful jam to see.
Portland won the third game of the
series yesterday afternoon on the local
field, when Harry Krause held Venice
to four hit. The score was wruano i,
Venice 0.
The Interesting- periods were when
Harry Krause pulled himself out of the
holes, band orer band.
It looked for a brief moment as II
Venice might have a chance to win or
tie the score In the ninth, when Krause
walked Hosp. batting; for Elliott. Me-
loan ran for Hosp and was disposed of
when White forced him at second, but
Harry put another on first with a walk.
That, with only one down, gave Port
land another real thrill.
Everybody I Aroused.
Leard made a vicious liner of one of
Krause's offerings and everybody got
p. "The ball just sailed, fairly high,
but pretty fast and Speas had to make
time. But he got it. That left one more
chance for a thrill and It was disposed
of when Kane was put out at first.
But In the majority of the innings
Krause had the Venetians doing his
bidding. In the first he fanned a couple
of them. Seven more, scattered through
the several Innings, hit nothing but
air.
Then Just to make things more inter
esting, he also walked six men and hit
Kane. Possibly those things, com
bined, help to make Harry the popular
boy that he is, for like a trip in the
"figure eight." you get the thrills, yet
are pretty sure of getting out all right.
Derrick Makes Lone Score.
Portland's lone tally came in the
fifth. Bancroft had fanned and Derrick
placed when McCarl gummed up a drive
to short. Derrick stole second and
scored when Rodgers put a "Texas
Leaguer" out In back of second.
Portland might have got another in
the sixth. Little old Dutch Korea had
the wool pulled over his eyes and let
the Venetians pull the old hidden ball
trick on him.
Korea was so surprised he stood there
and thought It funny that Hap Hogan
should be having such a good time over
on the sidelines. McArdie was we per
petrator of the "stunt" when Speas
drove over between first and second
and a mass play resulted. In which the
Venetians generally took a band. The
score:
Venice I Portland.

pitchers to the clubhouse because hits
came too often to suit Mike Lynch, the
Indians again "brought hom .the
bacon" after a ball game that was, a
real ball game. The score was Spo
kane 9, Portland 6.
It must be said In extenuation of
Nick Williams' willing hands, that he
was shy on real outfielders, while Spo
kane had the real article. The bit
column does not tell how hard Port
land hit the ball. Three, If not more,
drives which left the bat, labeled three
bases, were converted Into outs by
Lewis and Hogan.
On the other hand, short flies that
afforded only fairly difficult chances
were missed by Murray and Milligan,
and that's when most of the- damage
was done. The game had hardly started
when Spokane had a run. Lewis hitting
the first ball for three bases and scor
ing on poor handling of the ball.
It was In the fourth inning that Port
land made the bid for the game with
two men out. Milligan got a life on
Butler's error. Guigni singled and Mc
Kune followed suit, scoring Milligan.
Williams planted a safe beauty in cen
ter and Guigni scored. McKuna came
home on a wild throw by Hogan and
a two-bagger down the left field foui
line brought Williams home. It was at
this Juncture that Hughes replaced
Arlett. . . .
Hughes got out of some tight places
until the eighth, when Portland got its
Becond wind with the bat and clouted
the ball "for fair." With one run In
and men ou bases Noyes was called to
ths rescue. He proved fresh enough
to last the game out, while Spokane
was clouting Callahan. Portland's er
rors were costly, but failed to dismay
Callahan, who worked as hard in the
last innings as In the first. Score:

Oregon Wolf IV can turn 41 miles an
hour and that she can defeat the Ore
gon Kid II any time they flnlah.
A blinding sunset completely oblit
erated one of the buoys opposite the
flagship," said Engineer Wolff tonlghU
explaining the second visitation of the
hoodoo.
-"We could not see it and so ran by
twice without turning it correctly.
"However, the Wolf waa fsr ahead
of the Kid, and my honet belief Is
that my boat can run away from tha
Kid any old time." ...
"Do you think the olf Is as fast
your former designs?" the writer saked
Wolff. . ,
"You bet," he shot back, wiping the
grim off his weather-beaten features.
"This boat can turn 4 miles any time
I let her out. I think the Wolf IV could
trim the Kid I. and It Is my opinion
that the Kid II Is not as fast as the
first Rninler hydroplane."
Wolff attributed the slew time In the
first heat Thursday to a combination
of nasty water and a watchful waiting
policy.
"I did not open her up until the fifth
lap, content to be in the lead, but when
I did throw everything open we began
to literally run away from Smiths
'"Wolff lost this heat through the
breaking of a feed pipe at the 234 mile.
