The Oregon butter season Is now at Its height- The price of the best city creamery product Is holding steady at a range 2 cents under quotations pre vailing at this time last year. Through out the season prices have been 2 to 8 cents less than last year, as the sur plus, which in former seasons was eagerly taken for storage purposes, has this year been a . constant weight on the market. Speculators. It Is said, have been afraid to buy It up, knowing that if they did it would come In competition with foreign butter wnen they tried to take It out of storage. That New Zealand butter probably will be low In price when the Southern shipping season opens In the Fall is Indicated by the current quotations re ceived from that country by local but ter dealers. At the present time, when New Zealand's supply Is not large, the butter may be bought and laid down here at about 36 cents. Country creamery men are complain ing of the low price their cubes or sur plus butter Is bringing on this market, but the dealers find but little demand for it, except on the Sound and in Alaska, and the prices offered by the Northern buyers are low. The same fear exists at all points on the Coast of large Importations in the Fall and Winter. Because of the slack ness of the demand, farmers are obliged to take lower prices for their cream.
