At Los Angeles Los Angeles 7. Oakland 8, At San Francisco Sacramento 2, Francisco 1. San The ninth-inning rally flash Intro duced to Portland baseball fans Tues day made a second appearance yester day afternoon. It waa a beautiful flash with but one objection it did not last Inn it enouerh and Fortland had to sub mit to defeat at the hands of Venice, Hi-nm: Portland 5. Venice 7. A bad get-away put the game in the Tiger lair. Buddy Ryan maae a Daq throw from center and Litschi came all the way in on what should have left him on first. West helped by mak ing a poor throw to Fisher which failed to head off Lltschl. But that was the only shady part of the whole transaction. The Beavers kept rfght on coming, picking up a couple of runs in tne tnira ana lounn, but saving the brilliant but futile work until the ninth. Bancroft Shines In Tata Little Dave Bancroft did valiant duty by clouting out a home run with two down and Walter Doane on second. Not a man had stirred from the stands, and fans were Just greedy enough to expect the Beavers to finish up that ninth as they did Tuesday. But it was not to be. as the 10-cent novel would read. While the fans atill were rioting over Dave's masterpiece of clubist art. Derrick flied out to Mc Kane. It was not a victory, but there was a lot of satisfaction in seeing the Mackmen play that kind of bail. For the Tigers the game fared worse as time went on. Hi West stayed until the fifth, but even before he gave way to Evans things were no longer so easy for the organ-grinders. True. Evans allowed Venice two more, in the sev enth and eighth, but they were not the result of a disastrous pace. The first inning runs were made by rlisle Kane and Litschi. Carlisle placed on a walk, went to third on Kane's hit and was brought in by the hit part of the Litschi melee. Kane followed around and went past third when Ryan's throw to third went awry, and Litschi followed him up, getting In when West made the hurried ana bad throw to Fisher. McArdle Gets Doable. McArdle was responsible for the two runs in the seventh and eighth. His first double was made Into adamant by Carlisle's hit In the next he brought in Litschi with one Just like It. Portland's other runs came about through hits. Speas, Lober and Fisher brought in the one in tne lourxn, ana a walk resulted in Fisher scoring in the third. The TVilliamses warmed up their arms for four Innings and when they felt their whips were at their best unleashed a series of high and long heaves, like of which, are seldom seen. Several of these aeroplane tosses had the long distance throwing record beaten by rods. Hausman and Murray were in fine form and the heaves they made would have gone farther had the fence been moved back. Pitcher Leonard . had not been ad vised of the wild-throw" stunt and looked tatned. He was breezing along fine and had the Indians eating out of his hand. But he got plumb dls couragerl and finished his labors in desultory fashion. Weak hitters fat toned their averages, that is, the weak Spokane hitters. Hughes, pitching for Spokane, was naturally elated at the help given him by the Portland strong-arm squad, and did his best to prevent nls op ponents running themselves to death on the bases. Only in tne seventn inning did he offend and then, by din of a savage tilt or two and a bobble by a Lynch hireling, Portland runners twice dented the home plate. That was enough, for Spokane re sumed the swatfest in. Its half of the seventh and made three. It was enough and to sDare and the remainder of the game was as tame' as a dead automobile engine. Pespaln, a Spokane high, school youth, pitched the last two innings for Portland and showed plenty of stuff.
