THE MORXING OREGOyiAN. WEDNESDAY. JULY 1. 1914. 14 HEW RECORD HADE IN YEAR'S EXPORTS Gains Reported in Flour, Bar ley, and Lumber and in , Wheat Sent to California. TOTAL VALUE $12,983,361 Greater Home Consumption and Smaller Crop Account for De crease In Wheat Sales Lumber Movement Increase Big. Of 13,360.366 bushels of wheat floated from Portland for the cereal year end ed yesterday. California purchased 6 666.873 bushels. This figure breaks all records for the amount of grain Portland has diverted to the sister state. The year previous the move ment aggregated 6.602,434 bushels, also a record at that time. Greater home consumption and a smaller crop than in the 1912-13 sea son are" held accountable for a de crease in total shipments of 1,391.85a bushels. , Portland floated 6,263.716 bushels more wheat during the year than moved from Puget Sound, that dis trict having transported 7,096,650 bushels. The combined shipments from both districts, flour Included that was reduced to wheat measure, reached 38,073.715 bushels, as compared with 39,369,060 bushels the preceding year Flour Export Show Increase. In shipping 1.154,561 barrels of flour, Portland exceeded the total exporta tion for the 1912.-13 season by 193,300 barrels. Puget Sound reports a de crease in flour shipments of 11.822 bar rels the manufactured product dis patched amounting to 2.760,261 barrels. Summing up all exports financially Portland is credited with shipping com modities valued at $12,983,361. a gain over the corresponding period of 398, 077. Some of the advance may be credited to a large barley movement. The total for the year was 2,948,401 bushels valued at Sl.872,829. In the Merchants Exchange summary for the 1912,13 season barley exports were 1.764,591 bushels. mat was me iirst material showing in barley. Lumber Gain Immense. In the lumber column the story of Immense gains, told successively during the past few years, is repeated with an Increase for last year of 87,557,748 feet. The aggregate shipped was 397,716,143 feet against 310,158,395 feet during the 1912.13 period. Offshore shipments this time climbed to 177,846.313 feet valued at $2,169,824 against 145,609,871 feet valued at $1, 712,047 for the corresponding period. In the coastwise movement the 1913-14 eeason ended with a total of 219,869,830 feet as against 164,648,524 feet for the previous year. EGG IMPORTS TO INCREASE No Shanghai Hen Fruit Comes In June Following Heavy Shipments. Predictions that the importation of Chinese eggs during the 1914-15 period will be far In excess of that for the fiscal year ending yesterday are borne out through the movement of a heavy shipment of egg containers to Shang hai from Portland, which was valued at $7225, and It is naturally supposed that more containers have gone from Puget Kound and British Columbia territory. When the new tariff schedule be came effective October 3 the duty of b cents a doien on Chinese eggs was eliminated. Up to that time there had been from 205 to 1200 dozen eggs re ceived here each month, consigned, for the most part, to Chinese merchants. Immediately after the erasure of the toll, arrangements were made to ship eggs here for general commercial purposes, so in December 1137 dozen arrived, valued at $121, and in January 1125 doz en, worth $110. came in, February im ports growing to 6200 dozen at $816, and those in March being the heaviest when 184.925 dozen came in valued at $26,388, they being brought direct on the Royal Mall steamer araiganauirts. u 60.625 cases arrived appraised at $4998, and in May 1727 cases were entered at $133, there having been no June entries. FISHERMEN' NOT ACCUSED Iteports of Disobedience Not Made Basis of Complaints. Though a few masters of vessels say a recent Federal order against gill netters using the channel at the en trance to the Columbia is not being obeyed by all small boat operators, a specific complaint has not been made at the office of Colonel McKinstry, Corps of Engineers, U. The vessel arrived at moji iTsi-nirirnTKr Jura 7 and will make her way across the Pacific so as to be here for August-September loading. The Fernley will carry approximately nr. nnn hnshels and probably will load all ' wheat, though a barley option is Included. The trial of the dredge Chinook In the lower harbor yesterday demonstrated the fact that the new 30-inch pumps are successful. All four pumps wera opeiated for a time and they brought up so much sand and water that they nearly flooded the craft. This was on account of the overflow pipes being too small. It was necessary to close the engine-room tight to keep It from be ing flooded and the sand and water poured over the decks In a delusa. The difficulty can ba remedied read ily, as all that Is necessary Is to pro vide for an additional overflow. An engineer from the department arrived this afternoon to prepare plans for the required alterations, and while the equipment It being assembled th dredge probably will operate with the 30-Inch pumps alone and later lay up for a day or two, so that the changes can be made. In this way practically no time will be lost. In IMS Russia Imported T1S.700 bale ' raw cotton, valued at t51.550.ltn). ol News From Oregon Torts. ASTORIA. Or, June 30. (Special.)
