17 THE MORNING OREGOXIAXv TUESDAY. JUNE 30. 1914. 1 HkRMERS HOLD BACK Less Wheat Is Offered Since Prices Decline. BUYERS ALSO RESERVED Ko Contracting In Country for Early Shipment Is Reported Market Is Sow on European Export Basis. No wheat contracting was reported at the opening ot the week. It Is bellered tHat most of tho rales made for early shipment to the Orient hare been covered. The prices now quoted on new club are on the European export bails of 77 cents. These prices are not attractive to sellers, an offerings from farmers were much lighter yesterday than a week ago. After the first of the month. It Is hoped, business will open up more active ly, but In the meantime buyers are not In clined to operate in view of tho unsettled condition of the market. Chicago was weak yesterday, July clos ing c under Saturday and the distant months losing nearly a cent, but there was firmness at Liverpool, where gains of a to fc cent were recorded after the slumps of last week. Commenting on the late decline In European wheat markets, Broomhall says: . . . . .,k-,.IiU m "This weakness was largely to the outlook for tne American wheat crop, and with early harvesting ex pectations for early shipments, and this, together with cheaper offers of Canadian and Indian, has served to cause a bearish feeling. "At present Boumanla and Russia are re fusing to compete with America at reduced prices, and they continue to hold firmly, and this accounts for the liberal American (export taking during the past fortnight. Russian crop outlook continues fair, ana al though the outlook In Roumanla is rathet poor, tho crop will move early. I think that Russian sellers are likely to offer sparing ly If prices continue at the present depres sion, as the general belief is that shipments from tho Southern hemisphere and India Vlll continue small during August and thence to December. The import demand Is still Indicated as being large, although crops In Importing countries are better.' The foreign crop summary or ijroomnau follows: United Kingdom The general outlook lor wheat is satisfactory, but the Spring crop Is wanting rain. France There are fewer complaints com ing to hand regarding th outlook for wheat and some Improvement has been noted as a 'esult of recent rain. Crops In some parts lire very Irregular. "Weather good. Germany Tho outlook' for wheat, coarse grain and potatoes Is good and rye shows an Improvement. The weather is generally more favorable. , Russia The general outlook for wheat is considered as favorable. Supplies are in creasing. , Roumania The weather Is ansettled. Crop rospects continue to show an Improvement nd this Is especially true of corn. The wheat crop will be very short and liberal importation will be necessary. Hungary Weather Is slightly more favor able, but there is little If any Improvement In wheat 'and the outlook is generally poor. India Wheat is freely offered at lower prices. Austria The weather favors crop prepara tion and early seeding and our agent ex pects that there will ke some increase In the acreage. Local receipts. Two cars of new; crop Walla Walla onions will reach Portland today. They are being brought hero because of the high price of California onions, . but dealers discourage such shipments, because the northern onions t are Immature, and it was not expected to start the snipping, oi mem until juiy lu. when they would be In good condition for market The strength of the California onion market is due to the light stocks there, the crop having turned out short. California dealers are now contracting for Oregon onions at $1. Fruit business was brisk yesterday, be cause of the warm weather. Two cars of watermelons arrived and were quoted at 1 a to 2 cents. Two cars of California green fruit. Including Bartlett pears, plums and peaches, also arrived. The berry market was inclined to be top heavy. Strawberries are still coming in, but are going begging at 73 cents. Cantaloupes, in spito of excessive arrivals, are holding their own with $2 about the top. On tbe rr'our.d the same grade of fruit Is bringing 12.75. Kxckanste May Stop Gold Exports. KEW YORK. June 29. With two except (inns. July 11 and November 24 of last year. today's business on the Stock Exchange was tho smallest of any full day since the mem orable billiard of 1888, when New York was cut off from most of the world's markets. Transactions tor the session amounted to 69,00s shares. The movement, what there was of it. ranged from Irregular to heavy. Opening prices were mostly higher, in keeping with London, which showed no outward concern over the assassination of Austria's heir. Domestic news was of a negative charac ter, including misgivings over the Mexican situation, a gain In the movement of West ern tonnage and a sharp break in exchange, which probably had the effect of abating gold exports. Transfer of S4O0.000 to the Pacifio Coast called attention to demands from that center. A new low record of pig Iron at Pitts burg was registered and copper metal prices were agan revised downward. The band market was irregular, with weakness In some of the low priced Issues. Total sales, par value. Sl.480.00u. uovern ment bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J.
