THE arORNTN-G OREGONTA. THURSDAY, JUXE 23, 1914. 17 EARLY WHEAT SALES Free Movement Is Expected by Grain- Trade. FARMERS NOW OFFERING Downturn of Chicago Market In duces Growers in Northwest to Seek Buyers Business in Coun try on Larger Scale. A free and early selling movement is m dfcated toy the reports that are now coming In to tha local wheat trade. In the past two or three days farmers have shown an Increased willingness to meet buyers, with the result that business In the new crop has been considerably enlarged.. Trading In futures, however, is still light for this period. The change of attitude on the part of many growers has, no doubt, been occa sioned by the elumpy condition of the East ern wheat market and the belief In enor mous crops about to be harvested. Other fanners are more reserved and figure that the recent heavy declines In the specu lative centers are certain to be followed soon by a reaction, a view that certain of the dealers also Incline to. A good part of the baying that has been done has been in the early sections of Uma tilla County, where coast dealers paid a fraction better than SO cents, tidewater bass. for club for prompt shipment. For August club, a cent less was paid on con tract. In the loosl market yesterday 70 cents was quoted on new club, and It was asserted a considerable quantity could have been handled at that price. Red was also wanted at about the same basis. This early demand was practically all on account of Oriental business. The European market was weak and trad ing could not have been done, in view of Liverpool eables. at the same prices the Japanese were willing to pay. The cargo market was reported depressed by the weakness of the American markets and Australian wheat was offered cheaper. Local receipt In cars were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay still bang on, for our American cousins have a bone to pick here and we shall be able to- join Tn tne well-earned" reward later on. There Is a strong demand for Oregon hop contracts at 15 cents. Buyers are not able to xnalte much impression on growers, but at the same time are not disposed to raise their bids. The spot market is blocked. A California wire reported 15 cents offered for 1013 Sonomas. Too condition of the English market and crops Is shown by the following London hop dealers' circulars: Wild, Neame A Co. Business continues quiet and values unaltered. BALES OF OREGON WOOL IN EAST Graded Staple Offered at Boston 'on Clean Basis of 62 Cents. New clip Oregon wools are beginning to figure prominently In the transactions in the Eastern markets. The Boston Commercial Bulletin says: "Sales of original bag territory wool have Included almost every class; but principally Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon and Idaho. A lot of 90,000 pounds of original Colorado wool brought 23 to 22 H cents In the grease and clean costs on various lots ot this class of wool are figured anywhere from 64 to 68 cents. "Original bag Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming wools which have a fair percentage of staple wool in them not infrequently range as high as 60 cents, clean basis, but the average run of them bring about 67-68 cents. Sales of good Utah original wools were fairly heavy at 6a to 67 cents clean basis. Original Wyoming wool is reported to. have sold as high as 24 cents In the grease for medium original wools this week." " " "Very little graded wool has been offered in the market. Inquiry Is reported for high half-blood and fine staple territory wool, but no business has been disclosed up to this writing." ONION MARKET HAS UPWARD TENDEN Califomla Buyers Trying to Contract in This State. The real onion season in California is now about over and yellow onions are coming on the market. The situation is evidently bulltsh. as prices are firm and advancing in the south, snd it is reported that a num ber of California buyers are trying to make contracts for Oregon onions. New potatoes are coming forward more freely and are holding steady. There is but little demand lor old potatoes, and they are hardly quotable. The fruit market was moderately active with few changes in prices. Cantaloupes were firm and watermelons were steady. Peaches from The Dalles offered at 75 cents a box. Loganberries showed the effect of the rain and sold for the most part at 75 cents. Other berries were unchanged. Cherries were again iu large supply. Bulk quotations were 6 to 8 cents for Btngs and 6 to 7 cents tor Hoyal Anns. Eight cars of bananas were received, two of them Independents and six United Fruit. The general quotation was 3H cents. Vegetables of all descriptions were In adequate supply. Eggplant is again on the market and is quoted at 16 cents. COl'NTRY PRODUCE IN GOOD- DEMAND. Poultry, Eggs and Veal Move Readily at Finn Prices, There was a firm market for country pro duce yesterday. Poultry receipts were light and hens readily sold at 14 li cents, with a fraction better occasionally paid. Broilers were worth 20 cents. Egg receipts were rather light and stocks moved resdily at 23 cents, case count. For candled eggs, 25 cents was asked. The supply of veal was also small and the demand was good. Pork was the only weak feature, as arrivals for the day were excessive. Dealers quoted 104 cents as the top. There were no new developments, in the cheese or batter msrketa London Csscara Bark Situation. A letter from a London firm says of the csscara bark market: - "Everyone seems nonplussed over this ar tlole and has given it up for good. We say POTATOES Oregon, new, 2o per pound. Clackamas County Witnesses Tell of Reputation of Defendant Wkile Resident Before Charge. ROSEBUBO. Or., June 24. (Special.) That be shot and killed John Becker, near Cleveland, on April 16, in self-defense and not because of any differ ences that exlBted between the men was the substance of the evidence ad duced by Morrison Campbell, when he took the witness stand in the Circuit Court here today. Campbell said be went to a gateway some distance from his home to talk with Becker regarding the pasturing of some cattle, when he was attacked by the latter and pulled through the gate. In the melee that followed Camp bell said he pulled his revolver and fired three shots, each of which took effect. Becker fell dead In his tracks. Campbell declared that he had been on friendly terms with Becker and that his visit to the scene of the murder on the morning of the tragedy was purely a peaceable one. The defendant denied the contention of the state that ne went to the scene armed and for the express purpose of killing his victim. Numerous character witnesses were introduced by the defense, including Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Schubel and Grant B. Ulmmlck, of Oregon City. These testified that Campbell formerly lived in Clackamas County and was quiet and law-abiding citizen. The defense rested its case tonight, when District Attorney George M. Brown, who is conducting the prosecu tion, made his opening argument. The case will- probably go to the Jury not later than tomorrow afternoon, ine courtroom was crowded throughout to day's session. LIVERPOOL LEADS FALL Chicago Quotations Go Below Point at Which Even Russia; and Rou mania Can Compete lie action Is Due. CHICAGO, June 24. Wheat prices here tumbled today far below a level at which even Russia and Roumanla refused to com pete. Increasing certainty of an overwhelm lng crop In this country was mslniy respon slble. Closing values were relatively steady at a range e off to Ho np oompared with last night, corn snowed a net aecune oi 1-1S to So and oats off Ho to e. In pro visions the outcome was unchanged to cents higher. Flattering reports abont the harvests In tne United States had caused a severe bresk in prices at Liverpool before trading here be- gsn. The result was an abrupt setback for the Chicago market the Instant that business opened. Liberal acceptance of bias from here for wheat to arrive from the country had much to do with keeping the market de. pressed, notwithstanding advices tbat Euro pean rivals had withdrawn from efforts to undersell the ijnitea states. Oats weakened in sympathy with wheat and because of reports that rural holders were showing more willingness to sell. Provisions averagea higher with bogs.
