V P1NCHQTS VOTE IS NOT ENCOURAGING Only 7 Per Cent of Total Cast for Progressive Candi date in Primary. PENROSE LIKELY TO WIN Even Colonel Roosevelt, It Is Gen erally Believed, Would Not Be Able to Save Situation by Personal .Appeal. OREGONIAN NEWS BUREAU. Wash ington, June 31 Complete returns from the Pennsylvania Senatorial primary show that Gifford Pinchot, the third party candidate for Senator, received only 7 per cent of the total vote cast: Senator Penrose received 40 per cent of the total, and A. Mitchell Palmer, the Democratic nominee. 21 per cent, and the remainder of the vote went to the defeated Republican and Demo ' cratlc candidates. The detailed figures show the total vote cast in the Pennsylvania Sena torial primary to have been as fol lows: Penrose. Rep) Ijlmmlck (Rp.) palmer. I Dem. ) 1i-,Vr, Budd (Dem.) VS'tT Pinchot (Prog.) 40.iSJ On the face of these figures, which were not available at the time Colonel Roosevelt sailed for Europe, it is evi dent that the Colonel will find Justifi cation for not undertaking a state wide canvass in behalf of Gifford Pinchot. The Republicans polled 60 per cent of the total vote, the Democrats 33 per cent and the Progressive ticket had only 7 per cent of the total. The figures cited show that Penrose received practically two-thirds of the total Republican vote cast, and 100,000 votes more than were polled by Palmer, who won the Democratic nomination. His vote was nearly six times that given Pinchot. Apparently the only way Pinchot could be elected would be by adding to his own 40.000 votes the 112,000 votes cast for Dimmick and the 70.000 votes cast for the defeated Dem ocratic candidate, but it is out of all reason to expect any such thing to happen, even though Colonel Roosevelt may consent, later in the Fall, to make a few speeches in behalf of his friend. The Republican party is fairly well reorganized in Pennsylvania today, and the indications are that Penrose in No vember will receive most of the votes that were cast in May for Dimmick. He may not get them all in fact, he does not expect them all but Pennsyl vania politicians believe that only a few of the voters who supported Dim mick will turn to Pinchot at the behest of the Colonel. Pinchot'- chance of getting many of the disgruntled Demo cratic votes is not good. HINDUS MAKE PROTEST bTTJDEJTT SOCIETY AT CORVALLIS ADDRESSES COTJNT OK.TJMA. . With the Turkish government formally protest ing against the proposed sale of the American battleships Mississippi and Idaho to Greece, rumblings of war be tween Greece and Turkey were carried today to the White House. The diplomatic representatives of the two countries called on President Wll. son within a few minutes of each other one to urge and the other to oppose the warship deal. Greece takes the position that if she buys the vessels the balance of power in the Mediterranean will be preserved and peace maintained, while Turkey maintains that peace can be best guar-? anteed by the refusal of the United States to aid in augmenting her rival's naval forces. President Wilson told the callers earlier in the Jay that he favored the sale of the battleships to Greece, be cause it had been representd to him such action would be in the Interest of peace. He said that if he thought the vessels would be used In an Immedi ate war he would not consent to their sale. ' The question of the sale of the bat tleships is to come up in the House tomorrow , on a Senate amendment to the naval appropriation bill. Secretary Daniels desires the $12. 000,000 which Greece is willing to pay for the battleships to build another dreadnought similar to the Wyoming, and most of the leaders in Congress have been Inclined to authorise the step.
