Dieck Plans Shakb-Up. A shake-up In the city's department of public works was predicted yesterday by City Commissioner Dieck. He told the City Council he Intends to cut the salary roll either by the abolition of posi tions or reductions in the salary of some of the employes After the Coun cil meeting he said he had not decided where the reductions would be made. Police Thanked for Festival Work. By unanimous vote the City Com mission yesterday adopted a resolution introduced by Commissioner Dieck thanking the police department for its efficient work during Rose Festival week. Five big horsea. which have drawn the street-oleaning machines of the city through the streets for the last lo years, are to be sold at public auc tion this afternoon at J o'clock. The horses, while still in good condition. are said to have outlived their use fulness in the strenuous street-clean- inir service. They are all about 18 years old and are the oldest animals in the city service. The sale will be held at East Seventh and Alder streets. S. Kahn Lands in Jail. Mrs. George F. Boehn's story impressed Municipal Judge Stevenson as being the more truthful, when S. Kahn. a tamale ven der, caused her appearance in Cburt to answer to a charge of using pro fane language. When she learned the nature of the charge against her. Mis. Boehn filed a counter charge against the tamale man. She was released, but Kahn was locked up in jail through his Inability to file a J360 peace bond, Michigan Socibtt Plans Picnic. Man and Woman Sentenced. S. E. Calvin and Mrs. Nannie Miller yester day pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of Isabella Halwax, a 16-year-old girl, daughter of Mrs. Mil ler. Both offenders, have been in the County Jail 60 days. Circuit Judge Morrow sentenced the man to spend 11 months and 15 days at the rock- pile and the woman to serve four more months in the County Call. Motorcyclist Fined for Speeding. L. Poag was fined $25 yesterday by District Judge Dayton for speeding a motorcycle on Sandy boulevard Mon day night. Eugene White, county mo torcycle officer, who chased the young man, said Poag was traveling at the rate of 45 miles an hour when he over took him. Judge Dayton said that he would make an example of every speeder brought before him. Rev. Mr. Fry Goes to Honolulu. Rev. William H. Fry, pastor of Sunny side Methodist Episcopal Church, will leave today for Honolulu, where he will take charge of the mission work in that field. Mrs. Fry and the family will accompany him. The Rev. In getting ready for the strict en forcement of the new city ordinance requiring the cutting of weeds on va- oant property throughout the city, of ficials in the public works department yesterday arranged for 10 laborers. seven inspectors and one clerk to be put into the service at once. The city has been divided into cine districts, six on the East Side and three on the West Side. In all cases where the weeds are not cut upon the property owner being notified, the city will do the work and assess the cost and an additional $2 a lot to the prop erty on the city docket of liens.
