THE MORNING OREGONIAN, ' THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1914. 19 ATTACK IS EARLY Foreign Hop Yards Infested by Insect Pests. SITUATION IS WATCHED rnture Coarse of American Market Depends on Condition of Crops in England and Germany. Oregon Prospects Good. The weather at present is flue for the Oregon hop crop. The rains last -week left plenty of moisture In the ground and the ' higher temperature now prevailing; is causing the Tines to make a good growth. Several dealers who have heen through the hop-growing sections lately believe the Ore gon crop will be as large as last year's. The future of the market depends on con ditions on the other side of the Atlantic. Should trouble befall the crops in England and Germany, the high prices of last year would probably be repeated. The European plants have made a good start this year and the insect pests have also made a good tart. Cables for some time have brought the information that the foreign yards were being visited by an early and somewhat severe attack of lice. The Kentish Ob server of May 28 says t the conditions in England: "During the last few days, owing prob ably to the prevalence of northeast winds, there has been a considerable accession of 'fly In the hop plantations and In a few instances in Kent washing has already com menced, while many growers are preparing for making an early start. The. warm weather of last Thursday and Friday great ly facilitated plant growth, but the low temperature of the present week and' the biting wind have given the bine a check and It does not look a particularly good color. Oa the .whole, however, the bine 19 strong and stout and the prospects at this early stage are distinctly good. In many places -rain Is wanted." Belgian conditions, according to a letter from Alost, dated May 22, are as follows: "The aphis flies have considerably In creased In our hop gardens and lice are be coming much more in evidence. The' hot, sunny weather, about 65 Fahrenheit, and the mild nights which are now prevalent have facilitated the arrival of the lady birds and their yellow eggs are frequently found on the leaves. Should the tempera ture not fall briskly, then the niggers will soon appear and hinder the further spread ing of the vermin. "he present position commands careful attention. Old stocks are nil 'and brewers carry no stocks whatever. The contract market on future delivery has gained further strength and sellers are very difficult to find at present moderate quota tions. 5 to 100 francs." London hop dealers circulars lust received Bay: "Vlld. Neame & Co. There Is no alteration to report In our market. A moderate de mand continues and values are steady at their recent level. There Is a fair sprin kling of "fly" In all districts. Thornton A Manger Trade is quiet and restricted, prices remaining unchanged. Manger A Henley The steady inquiry no ticeable the last week continues, being chiefly for present requirements. Keports from the plantations speak of a general sprinkling of fly having made Its appear ance, "W. H. A H. Le May The inquiry noted in our last continues and several parcels have passed Into consumers hands during the past week at prices now ruling. Worcester Under the influence of the hot weather of last week the . bine made con siderable progress, but since Sunday there has been another decided check through the big drop in the temperature, the nights be ing bitterly cold. There Is a small steady trade doing at about late rates. CANTALOUPES OFFER AT AIX PRICES. Good Inquiry for Fancy Cherries Strmw berry Demand Over. Cantaloupes of all kinds and qualities were en sale yesterday, and prices varied accord ingly. The best ripe stock aold at S2.25, and green cants went aa low as $1.16 a crate. 'Watermelons were steady at the opening price. There was a good demand for fancy cher ries. Royal Anns selling at 810 cents and Blngs at 1012H cents, but cheap grades were not wanted at any price. The de mand for strawberries has also fallen off and prices were lower at 85 cents to ft a crate. Five cars of bananas were received in good oondltion. New potatoes were scarce and firm. A car of white potatoes arrived from Sac ramento and cleaned up at Ihi cents. A shipment of fancy head lettuce was re ceived from Hood River and brought 75 cents a dozen. .Front-street houses will be open only a part of the day Friday to receive express shipments. As it will be a legal holiday, the railroad frebxhl Ottices will be closed and no shipping orders will be filled on that day. TRICES OF POULTRY SHARPLY CUT Over-Supply at Hens on Street Other Lines Are Steady. There waa a decided over-supply of poul try on the local market yesterday and but for several liberal shipments to the north prices would have suffered more than they did. Some of the dealers cleaned up their stock of bens at 14 cents. While the en larged receipts are due In part to expecta tion by shippers of a strong holiday de mand, some of the Increase Is occasioned. no doubt, by the fact that the egg-laying season IB winding up. Receipts of eggs are gradually falling off and the market is In a firmer position than it has been for some time past. Prices are no higher, but may be advanced next week. There was a fair supply of poultry on hand and as the demand was equal to it. prices were steady. There were no new developments In the butler or cheese markets. WOOL SALES AT BOSTON ARE HEAVY Transfers of Week Estimated as High Eight Million Pounds. The wool-selling movement at Boston is growing rapidly. Saes during the past week are estimated as high as 7.O0O.OOO or 8. ooo.OOO pounds. Both domestio and for eign wools have been absorbed freely by leading mills and the business has been dls triuuled well among various houses in the "trade. Territory wools from the new clip are moving In a satisfactory way at top prices as recently quoted. Medium cross oreds and South American low quarters Dave received considerable attention and holders of foreign grades are encouraged in consequence. During the past week the Williamson clip in Montana waa secured by a Boston house at slightly over 20 cents. The cost laid down la the East, at this level, would be 22 cents or more. Yet the same clip was aold at Boston last Fall at 18 cents. All over Montana 20 cents Is being paid freely for the best wools. Average clips bring 18 to ibh cents. As high a 21 cents has been paid In the Triangle. Commissioner Says Condition of Many Places la Bad and Courts Kail to Give Proper Relief. SALEM, Or., Juno 10. (Special.) Al leging that rats Infest many restau rants in Portland and other cities of the state. J. D. Mickle. State JJairv and Food Commissioner, announces in his bulletin for June that he will wage war on the vermin. He declares that unless his requests that the proprie tors ria tneir places of the rodents nre heeded he will make a ruling that all rood prepared In places where there are rats be labeled "Rat Infested and if that is not done he will see to it that a placard containing the words Rat Infested" shall be posted at the entrance or each restaurant where mere are rats. There are dozens of restaurants in t-oruana many consider among the bet ter class,' says the Commisslmmr that are literally alive with rats and some of the towns of 2000 Inhabitants or more have hardly a building where food products are handled that are not lniestea witn rats. Lack of law has prevented us from closing a number of restaurants where rats abound, and in the absence of assistance from the courts this office is helpless unless Puduc sentiment can be aroused to the danger of rats, as it has been aroused to the danger of flies. Until we can get a sanitary law clothing us with authority to close . rat-infested establishments, this office will continue urging proprietors and owners of buildings to rid themselves of the pesky nuisance. If this is not heeded we will make use of the misbranding law that provides that all food prod ucts shall be propertly branded.". CHANGES ARE SMALL Only Fractional Variations in Wall-Street Prices. NEW WHEAT MOVING Shipping of First Cars Has i Bearish Effect. CLOSING PRICES ARE LOWER Kansas City to IteeelTe Initial Ship ment From Southwest General European Buyinp Is on Largo Scale and May Continue. CHICAGO. June 10. New crop wheat In cars actually on the road for the big termi nal markets gave the chief advantage to day to the bears. Closing prices, although steady, were o to c under last night. Other leading staples all showed a net ad vance, corn c to lc, oats to c and provisions 2 95 to 17 c. Under free selling, part of which was un doubtedly hedging of the new crop, wheat values broke to a lower level than any pre vious time this session. Belief that the short selling of wheat on account of the prospective big crop ltad beeen overdone caused the market to rally at the opening. In addition, there were advices from Liver pool that general European buying was on a big scale and was expected to continue. Pit offerings here were light. Later the mar ket eased off because shipments of new wheat were reported as on the way to Kan sas City. Alarm over drouth carried the corn market higher. Temperature so hot as to curl the eaves In the field was an additional source of anxiety. Oats climbed as the result of crop dam age advices from Illinois and other impor tant states. Prospect of a falling off In receipts of hogs brought an upturn in provisions. At first, however, the market was weak, in sympathy witn prices at the yards.
