Difhthbria Epidemio Rages. Wash
ington County has an epidemio of
virulent diphtheria, according to a
statement yesterday by Dr. Calvin S.
White, secretary of the State Board
ef Health. Thirty or forty cases, with
one death. Dr. White says, have been
reported. Beaverton, St. Marys. Whit
ford and Cornelius are among the
towns in which the disease has broken
cut, says the report Miss Effle Tost,
a nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital, con
tracted the disease while nursing one
of the patients, and is now ill in. St.
Vincent's Sanitarioum.
Forestry Maps Offered. The dis
trict office of the Forestry Service
yesterday received a small supply of
maps of the Washington National For
est, which It will distribute upon re
quest. This forest is located in the
northern part of the west slope of the
Cascades In the State of Washington,
known as the Mount Baker region.
District Forester Cecil has left for
Hemlock, Wash., to inspect the forests
there.
Ad Club Presents Flatlet Tosat.
"The Anniversary of the Wedding of
the Potlatch and the Rose and the
Christening of the Child, Miss Tacama,"
will be -the feature of the meeting of
the Portland Ad Club in the Portland
Hotel at noon today. Among the per
formers in the playlet will be Mayo
Methot, Mayor Hi Gill, of Seattle;
Mayor Albee, Charles Berg, president of
the Ad Club, and George F. Vranden
burg. Alleged Hold-Uf Taken to Jail.
Robert Lipp, accused of two hold-ups
hrfe last Winter, was brought to Port
land yesterday from Spokane by De
tective Tichenor, and is held In the
City Jail. He was arrested by the
Spokane authorities. Lipp is reported
to have been Identified by a second
hand dealer, to whom he sold the
watch he Is alleged to have taken from
one of the vlctirrJa. .
Indian Faces Murder Charge.
Thomas G. Smith, alias Williams, an
Indian from the Klamath reservation,
was brouRht to Portland yesterday by
Denuty Marshal Jackson. Smith is
charged with the murder of Link
River Beal, another Indian. Beal is
said to have ordered Smith off his
allotment. The latter was supposed to
be crazed with drink. The tragedy
followed
Ball Committee Wants Roses. The
committee in charge of the Rose
Festival ball . would appreciate dona
tions of red and white roses to be
used in decorating the ballroom. Thp
roses should have as long stems as pos
sible and should be delivered to Mrs.

Michigan Soctett Gives "At Home."
The Michigan Society held a large re
ception Monday night in their club-
rooms in the Masonic Temple. The
evening was planned as an "at home'
for out-of-town guests. Announce
ment was made of the plcnio at Bonne
ville, which the society will give June
27. Other state Wjcietles will be In
vited to participate in the outing.
Veteran's Funeral Held Todat.
Funeral service will be held at Oswego,
Or., at 10:30 today for Henry Piatt, who
died at his home there Monday. Mr.
Piatt served five years as a corporal
of Company C, Twelfth Michigan, dur-
insr the Civil War. At the time of
his death he was a member of George
Wright Post, G. A. R. He was born in
Stark County, O.. May 14, 1838.
Art Museum Free to Visitors. The
Portland Art Association invites all
Rose Festival visitors to regard the
Museum of Art, on Fifth and Taylor
streets, as an auxiliary of the Rose
Festival centeF. Admission is free at
all times during the Festival and th
special attraction is an exhibition of
original etchings and drawings by
Kembrandt.
Theft of Monet" Reported to Police.
Karl ' W. Evans, who lives at the
Boston House, 91 Broadway, reported
the loss of valuable papers to the po
lice yesterday. He Bald that someone

a gold watch. Detectives were de
tailed on the case.
Woman's Club Makes Market Plans.
Committees from the Alberta, Woman's
Improvement Club expect to complete
all arrangements for the new public
market, at Alberta and Twenty-third
streets, by next Tuesday. The market
days will be Tuesday and Saturday
of each week.

Blanche Hersey Hogue, of Portland,
who was elected yesterday by the board
of directors of the First Church of
Christ. Scientist, in Boston, to be sec
ond reader of the Mother Church for
the next three years, is well known
here. Since its inception, Mrs. Hogue
has been identified with the First
Church of Christ. Scientist, in Port
land, and In recent years she has served
as a teacher of Christian Science.
Commencement Exercises Todat.
Commencement exercises of Columbia
University will be held this morning
in the college chapel at 10:30 o'clock.
President Joseph Gallagher will pre
side. Archbishop Christie is expected
to be present. Degrees will be con
ferred and award of medals for spe
cial scholarships will be made.

16 NURSES ARE GRADUATES
Dr. J. F. Sell Makes AddTess at St.
Vincent's Training School.
A class of 16 nurses graduated from
St. Vincent's Training School last
night. The exercises were held in St.
Vincent's Hall, which was decorated in
Ivy and the class colors of gold and
brown.
Pr. James F. Bell delivered the ad
dress to the graduates. Misa Anne
Margaret Derapsey responded for the
nurses. Archbishop Christie was. one
of the speakers. Others who took part
in. the programme were the Misses Rita
Manning, Carrie Manning. Marguerite
Evers, Agnea Hughes. Claira Kremer.
Mrs. Minnie Thompson Carty and Earl
L. Williams and Benjamin E. Chappelle.
The musical numbers were rendered
by the pupils of St. Mary's Academy
musical school and the Christian
Brothers' College. After the exercises
the graduates attended a banquet given
by the junior class.

Just what the representatives of the
Seattle Dad's Association are preparing
to "uncork" when they reach Portland
is still a matter of conjecture, but the
Portland Ad Club foresees "great do

In the spelling contest conducted re
cently in all ' grades of the Portland
schools between 4A and 9B, Inclusive.

highest building average,, S.3U per
cent, but the largest percentage of its
pupils, i.b, made perfect individual
Bcores and four of its grades, 4 A, TB
9A and 9B, carried off the city honors

Capitol Hill. Takes Points.
Right behind Failing- School In the
matter of building average came
much smaller school, Capitol Hill, with
98.30. The suburban school at Mult
worth fourth with 97.7 and Holman
and Lownsdale tied for fifth with 87.6.
At the bottom of the list came Ken
nedy School, with an average of 74.7,
and Frazer Home, with 77.6, the only
two below 80 per cent.
Fifty-four per cent of the enrollment
of the Failing School spelled all of the
100 words correctly, Capitol Hill came
second with 60.6, Ainsworth third, with
48.4 per cent, Holman iourtn, with 4.8,
ana uavis mm, witn 41.1 per cent.
Eastmsrelaod Missies "Words.
Curiously enough, not a single pupil
in the Lastmoreland School spelled all
wods correctly. At the Frazer Home,
4.1 per cent of the pupils had perfect
scores and at Kenton School only S.S.

The operations of Harry 8. Stone, a
member of a gang which flooded the
Northwest with counterfeit 5 gold
pieces, were ended yesterday when Fed
eral Judge Bean sentenced him to two
and one-half years on McNeill's
Island.
His partner. William C Vauehan,
was sentenced to four years at the
same penitentiary a week ago. A
third member, Charles Dutcher, awaits
sentence.
Stone presented Secret Service Agent

career as a criminal up to the time of
his capture by Mr. Glover and a later
prophetic series shewing the Judge
sentencing him. his life on the "Island"
and concluding with his release as a
time-expired convict.

and has been a member of the state
militia for a number of years, serving

Commissioner Blgelow has presented
an ordinance to require boats to put
spark arresters on smokestacks. Com
