Finishing- touches are being' put on
Peninsula Park for the Peninsula Rose
Show, which opens there today. Yes
terday an array of men under the di
rection of Superintendent Mische were
at work erecting: the platform. Just
north of the bandstand, on which the
rose dance will be held this afternoon
and In completing brick columns sur
rounding the sunken gardens.
Booths for the rose exhibits have
been built under the direction of S. 1
Osborne. The High School boys
erected the frame for the rose booths,
first grading the grounds. '
Booth No. 1. near the entrance, is for
the deposit of roses, which are to be
distributed to those who enter that
eate by younr women. Next coma the
booths extending eastward, which will
be occupied by the neighborhood com
petitive exhibits from the Peninsula.
There will be about 11 such exhibits.
Tlie last five booths with table are
reserved for Individual displays of
roses.
All the displays are expected to be in
place this morning by 9 o'clock, so that
the judging may start at that time.
Special neighborhood committees have
charge of the competitive booths.
Surrounding the sunken gardens a
wire has been placed on piers to which
are attached 5200 electrlo lights for the
Illumination of the gardens. The
sunken gardens will be seen to best
advantage probably at night under the
rays of the electric lights.
The eugenio contest will be held to
day In the recreation building at the
north end of the park, under the charge
of Dr. Mary V. Madigan and her as
sistants. The library will be used for
the examinations. Several physicians
will be able to work at the same time,
fame of the other rooms will be used
for dressing-rooms.
Opening exercises will be held In the
open grounds this afternoon at 2
o'clock, at which time the show will
be formally opened by Mayor Albee. C

special election will be held Wednes
day for the purpose of voting upon
a bond Issue of 17500 for a septic tank
to take care of the 'sewerage of this
city, and a bond Issue of $5000 for the
purpose of purchasing a site for the
permanent location of the County
Fair.

tion that It can't rain every Saturday,
the children .of Willamette Heights,
who postponed their miniature rose
festival last Saturday because of weep
ing skies, have chosen next Saturday as
the day and 2 o'clock aa the hour for
their postponed pageant.
Sylvia Strain, wee daughter ' of Mr.
and Mrs. T. T. Strain. 1095 Franklin
avenue, has been chosen queen of the
festival. Not even Queen Thelma. ruler
of the adults' festival, will have a. more
brilliant court or more devoted cour
tiers than little Queen Sylvia
George W. Klelser. Jr., who la "next
door neighbor" to Queen Sylvia, is
manager of the festival, and. like his
elder contemporary of the larger show,
has "everything In readiness" and has
had since early last Saturday morning,
when the hopes of himself and hla little
playmates danced away In the patter
ing rain drops.

MAZAMAS CLIMB PEAKS
Angel's and Devil's Rest Afford In
spiring View for Hikers.
The Mazamas took their customary
hike Sunday, despite the unfavorable
weather that greatly reduced the at
tendance. A party of 18 went to Latou
relle Saturday afternoon and camped
out for the night. Another party of 28
followed on Sunday morning.
All members made the ascent of
Angel's Rest, a high, bold promontory
east of Bridal Veil, while a part of
them also climbed Devil's Rest, from
whose summit, at an elevation of 2465
feet, some inspiring views were ob
tained. A fir pole was cut and a flag
raised by the Misses Ethel Freeman
and Clara Miller it being the first one
to ever float over Devil's Rest. The
full party returned to Portland In its
special car.
The Mazamas will have a strawberry
plcnio this evening at the farm of
J. M. Mason, leaving on the Cazadero
line at 6:45 P.' M.

GRANTS PASS, Or, June t. (Spe
cial.) The Rogue River Valley cream
ery has under consideration the pur-
bution among the farmers upon easy
terms. -The creamery - has a surplus
fund for this promotion work. The
officers of the corporation believe that
as soon as the money is turned is on
the first carload that it would be to
the interest of the creamery to buy an
other lot of cows. In May, 15,470
