Quotations were un changed. Tbe flour market was also quiet, both locally and shipping. Crop conditions In the Northwest con tinue satisfactory, and the weather bureau's estimates are favorable, as shown In the figures given .n the June report. European crop conditions are summarised by Broom' ii a 1 1 Ma luiiowi. United Kingdom The weather has been mostly favorable and the outlook for wheat in fairly rood, while coarse grain- has had Inadequate moisture. France Wheat shows moderate deteriora tion, owing to unfavorable tilling of the soil. The outlook is unsatisfactory. Coarse grain shows a generally favorable aspect. Native offers of wheat are light. Germany Recent rain benefited wheat and the outlook Is mostly favorable. Com plaints are heard from rye and fodder crops. fe up plies of native wheat are small. Russia Supplies In the southwest are Jfght. Azoff good and Baltic ports light. Good rains are reported from the lower Volga regions and this rain Is extending northward. Roumanle The weather Is unsettled, with rain In parts; and this is favorable tor wheat. The consensus of opinions are that thre will be but a bare average yield. This Is the only spot tran sact. ou recently closed In the Northwest. California advices note the sale of the Mad dux lot of 461 bales of Sonomaa and the Cunningham A Shay lot of 104 bales of So nomas, both at about 13 H cents. These deaii and the sales made about ten day sgo reduce the California surplus about 1000 bales. FIRST WATERMELONS ARE RECEIVED Carload Arrive and bells Weil at 8Vfc Cents Pound. The first ear of watermelons arrived yes terday. They were of good quality and sold readily at SH cents a pound. The season la about a month earlier than last year. Three cars of cantaloupes were received and sold lower at fS.titf3.75 a crate. A mixed car of deciduous fruits, the first of the season, arrived and cleaned np well. Peaches sold st 81.3V plums at 81.35 and apricots at Lift, The atrawberry market was firm, with the bee shipping stock quoted at $LI. Cherrlea were plentiful and unchanged. NO MORE INDEPENDENT BANANAS Quality Was Superior and Consumers Will Lose by Stoppage of Shipments Four cars of independent bananas are on the way to this city and will arrive tonight. After this shipment Portland eonnmert will have to fall back: of the bananas of the Fruit Dispatch Company. To date 12 care of Independent bananas have been brought here and they have given absolute satisfaction, all reports to tbe contrary not withstanding. "The Independent bananas were tbe finest ever brought to Portland," said T. Pearson, yesterday. "They were better on arrival and held up better after they were ripe than any I ever saw. The Fruit Dispatch Company never sent such fine fruit to this city and we are sorry no more are coming. but In the Interest of harmony In the local trade we will go back to the fruit of the old company."" . . Number of Failures Decreasing;. Once again the failure record for the United States discloses progressive Improve ment, commercial defaults during May, as reported to R. G. Dun fc Co., making the best exhibit of the year from a numerical standpoint and also showing some contrac tion as compared with the corresponding period of 1U13. Thus, there were 1221 busi ness reverses last month, as against 1330 in April. 144 tn March, 1506 In February and 1857 In January, while in May, a year ago, 1240 concerns were forced to suspend. Larrs Poultry Receipts Expected. The poultry and dressed meat markets were not active yesterday. There was a fair upply on hand, and the feenng in the mar ket waa weak. Dealers look for very heavy receipts of poultry this week. The egg market waa steady to firm at un changed prices. Receipts are declining, hut there is much complaint as to quality. Stone, general secretary of the Portland Young Men's Christian Association, accompanied by Mrs. Stone and A. S. Allen, general secretary of the Seattle Y. M. C A., and Mrs. Allen, left yesterday for the East. They will visit several of the larger Eastern as sociations and attend the annual T. M. C. A. employes-officers' conference at Geneva, Wis.. June 25 to 2S. Mr. Stone and Mr. Allen are on a committee that will report to the con ference on efficiency methods In the organization. They have worked for a year compiling; a voluminous report, which deals with T. M- C. A. finances and Is based on a study of detailed working of scores of organizations. Other Portland secretaries who will attend the conference are: C N. Wona cott, assistant general secretary; H K. Melby, business secretary and H. E. Randall, religious work director.
