'The Great Light Way," or Third Street, as it was formerly known, isplanted with giant steel
double arches, which measure across every street intersection from Yamhill street to Burnside
street. These arches weieh nearly five tons and span a full 82 feet. There are ten of them, each set with a
750-watt bulb at the apex of the arch and with 200 40-watt globes along its arms. In all, over 87,000 watts
of electric energy are consumed in an hour while the full current is turned on. It took two weeks of hard work to erect the
arches. And mightily risky work it was, too, because of the proximity of the wires and trolleys. Insurance protection
on the work cost 164 per cent of the pay rolL But the job was put through without injury or interruption and "The Great Light
Way," which we now have, stands as a fitting reward for the labor and money expended.
