AUDITORIUM FUND
IS CALLED ENOUGH
Mr. Freedlander Thinks Ade
quate Building Can Be Put
Up for $450,000.
CLAIM FOR FEE PRESSED
Architect Willing to Negotiate Set
tlement for Discarded Plans and
Prepare Xew Set for Mar
ket Block Structure.
That Portland can get a good, ade
quate and attractive public auditorium
on the Market block on the West Side
for $450,000 is the opinion of J. H.
Freedlander, of the firm of Freedlander
& Seymour, architects, of New York,
who arrived in the city yesterday to
confer with members of the City Com
mission regarding- the auditorium mix
up. At a meeting with the Commission
ers yesterday the question was gone
into thoroughly, but no definite settle
ment of the question of the fee due to
Mr. Freedlander for drawing the orig
inal plans for the building was reached.
Mr. Freedlander came here to press
Tiia claim for J16.000, which he says is
due for the preparation of the plans for
a building to be erected on a double
block, which plans have been discarded
by the Council because a double block
for the building Is not available, and
the building as planned would post
J745.000 instead of $450,000, which is
the limit of the amount available for
the structure.
Money Held V by Council.
The money which Mr. Freedlander
pays is due has been held up by the
Council because of the fact that he pre
pared plans involving an expenditure
of J745.000, whereas the rules of the
contest in which the design was se
lected limited the cost to $450,000.
Mr. Freedlander says that while he
realizes the Council is limited legally
to $450,000 for the building it was not
so reprenented to him by the old Audi
torium Board. He says an additional
bond issue of $200,000 was pointed out
rs a possible asset in the building fund.
The bond issue referred to was de
feated by the people later, he .says.
He says he believes the city owes
Kim something for the preparation of
the original plans. He says he went
to a great deal of expense In making
the plans. As to the amount, he says
be is willing to negotiate with the
city in an effort to arrive at a mutual
agreement.
IVo-w Contract Invited.
With this question settled he says
be is willing: to bo ahead and prepare
new plans for a smaller building. The
pay he would receive for this work
was not discussed at the meeting, but
will be taken up at another meeting
to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock
In the office of Mayor Albee.
Mr. Freedlander says by changing
the general plan of the buildintj from
a "circus" or "horse show" affair to a
theater effect. a satisfactorr and
Adequate
uditorlum can bo built on I
the Market block for $450,000. He says
ine oki pians miprnt just as well be
dropped into the wastepaper basket as
they would be of no use for the new
building-. He eays the city can put up
a. building; on the Market block with
just as stood a design and as frood a
finish for J450.000 as could have been
put into the larger building: for the
additional amount.
He expressed a willineness to gro
ahead with new plans. He desires to
select a local architect to work with
nim in developing the plans and
supervising the construction.
