THE 3IORNTNO OREGOXTAX. TTJESDAT MAT 19, 1914. 13 MANY ACTS OFFERED Manager of "Follies" Has Big Task Making Programme. 10 WEEDED, 17 VOLUNTEER Frank Coffinberry Kaoes Unexpect ed Difficulty but Hopes to Have Vaudeville Part of Show Selected by Tomorrow. So many vaudeville artists have vol unteered their services for the 1914 Follies at the Heilig Theater next Thursday night that an unexpected dif ficulty has arisen in the selection of the programme that is to precede and follow "The Two Orphans," the 20-mtn-ute tabloid to be "acted" by the man agers themselves. Seven acts at the Orpheum, five acts at the Empress and aa many at Pantages, making 17 acts . -iter ., . . V INeroua; and Seaman, Keating; and Rtiker. Coffinberry and .lonnson. Six Managers Mho 'Will Max in the Kollles. in all, have besieged Frank Coffin berry, manager of the Orpheum and major domo of the affair, to be as signed places on tho "Follies" pro pram me. As the show is scheduled to be a 10-act affair, exclusive of "The Two Orphans," Mr. Coffinberry is up against a Haminerstein task in the choice of artists for Portland's biggest annual benefit in theate.rdom. Eddie Foy, al ways on the alert to entertain for charity, placed himself and the Foy lets at the service of the "Follies" management; Marshall F. Wilder, also an Orpheum star, offered to stay on the stage for an hour if necessary, and Julian Rose, renowned Hebrew comedian at the Empress, said if charity did not beckon him to the '"Follies" his old-time acquaintance with George L. Baker would. Thus it was all the way down the muster roll of artists appearing at the three vaudeville theaters. All rallied to the banner of charity. Mr. Coffinberry expects to have the 'vaudeville programme arranged com pletely by tomorrow night. In addition to the mammoth vaudeville-show, an orchestra of 60 pieces, provided by the Portland Mutual Musi cians' Association, will give a concert. Webber's Juvenile Orchestra also will be on hand and comedy antics in the front of the house under the supervision of "Bill" Pangle will be a show by themselves. 0. E. Athletics are proving one of the most potent factors in breaking down the caste system in India, according to L. Wilbur Messer, general secretary ot the Chicago Y. M. C. A., who is passing this week at the Portland i . M. C. A. on his way home from a trip around the world. Mr. Messer spoke four tin'es to groups of men at the Y. M. C. A. yesterday. .His remarks about India were addressed to the physical depart ment committee. "The Y. M. C. A. is a big influence in India," said Mr. Messer, "and its physical work particularly is bringing about reforms and paving the way for religious endeavor. More than 50 na tive teachers from all parts of India gather at Calcutta for regular instruc tion in physical department worx. I he contests they promote are tending to do away with the caste system. "Throughout the Orient the Y. M. C. A. is promoting the same games that are played in America. Basketball, vol ley ball, indoor baseball, handball and other sports are played with enthu siasm by the boys and young men of India. China, Japan and the Philip pines. Some of the athletic meets in which representatives of many nation alities participate are most interesting to an American. Mr. Messer will spend a busy week L-L'.j -1 si - 3 an rif. W Till 7. SAXON MAKES FUEL TEST 200-Mile Xon-Stop Bon Required About 3 0 Miles to Gallon. To test its ecenomical use of fuel the H. Ij. Keats Auto Company sent out a Saxon car early last Saturday morning on a 200-mile non-stop motor run under the official supervision of The Oregonian. With Earl Mann at the wheel and a representative of The Oregonian be side him a start was made at 5:30 A. M. from the company's salesrooms at Sixth and Burnside streets. The route lay along the Valley road to Gresham, thence across to the Sandy road and back by way ot Eigiity-second street to the Powell Valley road again. This rectangle measured about 22 miles in circumference and was negotiated for a total of 202.4 miles. One bad tire caused a delay of two and one-half hours because of punctures and blow outs, although the motor was kept running all the time. The actual running time was eight hours, the car covering the 202.4 miles on six and three-quarters gallons of gasoline, or an average of almost 30 miles to the gallon. Without tiro trou ble the average would have tieen be tween 34 and 55 miles. The run ended at 4 o'clock at the garage.
