SPLIT IN RANKS OF
ITS
Bitterness Sure to Follow
Canon -Esterly Race for
National Committee. .
PARTY CONTROL IN BALANCE
Contest, Starting Quietly, Becomes
Virtually Struggle of Lane and
Chamberlain Factions for "
Supremacy in State.
Whatever the result of the contest
tor Democratic Rational committee
man between H. M. Esterly, of Port
land, and W. H. Canon, of Medford,
there Is certain to be a great deal of
"bitterness between the supporters of
the winner and the loser.
Beginning quietly enough, the fight
developed before the primary Into what
Amounted to a contest for supremacy
between the Chamberlain faction and
the Lane faction of the Democratic
party in this state.
Canon, a close personal friend of
Senator Chamberlain, was considered
to have a clear field for the office until
just before the expiration of the time
for any other candidate to file. At
least one other Democrat, Hugh Mc
Clain, of Marshfield, after announcing
Ills candidacy, had withdrawn, so that
Mr. Canon, who was regarded as de
nerving the office because of his work
or the party through the state and
especially for Woodrow "Wilson in the
1918 campaign, should not have op
position. V. S. Myera Takes Band.
Then P. S. Myers, postmaster of Port
land and former campaign manager
and private secretary to Senator Cham
"berlaln. injected himself into the
situation.
Mr. Myers persuaded Mr. Esterly to
run against Mr. Canon. His alleged
reason was that Mr. Canon was a "re
actionary" and that Mr. Esterly. as a
Woodrow Wilson "progressive" Demo
crat, should represent Oregon in Na
tional Democratic councils.
But Mr. Canon's friends, comprising
all the leading Chamberlain men of the
state, refused to see him thus virtually
read out of the party as a "reaction
ary." They pointed to his great serv
ices in behalf of Woodrow Wilson and
to Democratic candidates- in 1912, in
cluding Senator Lane himself and prior
to that time. It has not been disputed
that Mr. Canon was the first Influential
Democrat in Oregon to espouse the
cause of Woodrow Wilson and fight to
get him the votes of the Oregon dele
gation at the Baltimore convention.
Putnam's Support a Factor.
The part taJten by the Medford Mail
Tribune, of which George Putnam is
editor, in supporting Senator Bourne
when he sought re-election in 1912, was
dragged Into the Issue. Mr. Myers and
other Esterly men. of whom It is im
portant to note that the Federal office
holders tn Oregon, appointed through
the influence of Senator Lane, have
been virtually a unit, asserted that Mr.
Canon should be defeated because he
was supported by Mr. Putnam.
Charges of "pernicious political ac
tivity" against Mr. Myers by the Med
ford editor are only Incidental to the
KOneral bitterness the Canon-Esterly
a-uction has aroused.
One of the significant results of the
Quarrel has been the public indorse
ment of Mr. Canon, in a signed state
ment, by Bert E. Haney. chairman of
the Democratic State Central Commit
tee, and by H. B. Van Duzer, chairman
of the county Central committee, both
tstaunch Chamberlain men. In their
statement, which was widely published
before the election, thinly veiled refer
ence to the activities of Mr. Myers,
lieutenant-in-chlef in Oregon of Sena
tor Lane, was made in the assertion
that "Democrats of Oregon will resent
this effort to gain control of the party
lor purely selfish purposes."
Jackson County Men Heard Prom.
Democrats of Jackson County, rush
ing to Mr. Canon's defense in a signed
statement, published in papers through
out the state, have shown their resent
ment even more plainly, as witness this
extract :
"A certain Federal officeholder and
recent party enthusiast, whose presence
of mind is much keener than his party
zeal, realizing that Mr. Canon could not
be handled by tho official's gang, put
a candidate of his own in the field and
prostituted his high office by inducing
other Federal officers to circulate the
petition of his candidate, and by en
gaging in a gumshoe campaign in his
behalf. Not being 'Satisfied with his
flagrant violation of the Federal regu
lations, this gentleman has seen fit to
publicly libel Mr. Canon's party loy
alty." This statement is signed by 54 Jack
aon County Democrats.
But behind Mr. Myers, the hand of
Senator Lane is seen by the Chamber
lain Democrats. Lending strong sup
port to their theory that Senator Lane
is personally interested in having Mr.
Canon, the friend of his co-Senator,
defeated, is the undented story that a
"fund" raised among Federal office
holders appointed, through Mr. Lane
has been used in forwarding Mr. Ester
ly'o campaign.
Officeholders Give Money.
It is no secret that "contributions"
to Mr. Esterly's candidacy have been
made by Federal office holders in this
city, and that they have taken an act
ive Interest in his candidacy. Nor is
it any secret that Postmaster Myers
-was. conferring busily in the laBt few
days before the election with deputies
in the Federal offices, and that pres
sure was brought to bear on deputies
to support Mr. Esterly.
For a candidate for a non-salaried of
fice Mr. Esterly's campaign expenses
have been large. Half page advertise
ments have been inserted in the news
Papers, for one thing. This is the use
to which the "fund" raised, as they be
lieve, with the cognizance and approval
of Senator Lane, has been put.
It will take much more than mere
protestations of friendship for Senator
Chamberlain by Postmaster Myers and
the other Lane men who have been thus
active in trying to defeat Mr. Canon
to heal the wounded feelings of the
Chamberlain Democrats.

DEAF WILL GIVE CIRCUS
Annual Affair to Be Staged in The
ater for Outsiders.
VANCOUVER. Wash., May 16. (Spe
cial.) The annual indoor circus, given
by the students of the Washington
State School for tho Deaf, will be
staged this year in a downtown show
house for the first time, on May 25,
in the U. S. A. Theater.
The circus Is extraordinary and Is
fairly well patronized at the school.
where transportation facilities are
meager. There has been a persistent
call to have the circus put on where
the entire city could have an oppor
tunity to see It and the deaf have
responded.
Their annual parade, in which the
pupils take the part of elephants,
tigers, zebras and other animals, always
attracts great attention and the "deaf
band" is one of the comedies that
cannot be Imitated by anybody.
