FEWER EGOS COMING
Imports From China Will Be
Smaller Next Year.
THIS MARKET NOT NEEDED
Heavy Movement to Coast in Past
Season Due to Poor Buying Power
of Japanese, According to K.
Ij. McAdam, of Shanghai.
Shipments of Chinese eggs to the pacific
Coast In the season now closing were ',
larger than they will be, probably, for sev
eral years to come, in the. opinion ot Ed- !
in L. McAdam, an egg exporter of Shang
hai. Mr. McAdam, who passed through
Portland, was formerly in the produce busi-
ness in Chicago, but is at present a resi- j
dent of China and Is thoroughly acquainted
with egg and poultry conditions in the
Orient.
The usual markets which take the bulk of :
Chinese eggs, he said, are the Straits Set
tlements, Formosa, the Philippines and Ja- ;
pan. This latter country is the heaviest i
buyer, but the famine there this season has
forced the Chinese producer to seek a new
market for his stock, thus accounting for
the large shipments to this country. It is
more than probable that affairs in Japan
will be nearer the normal by next -year and
a large share of the goods now coming here
will be diverted. The Japanese do not use
the eggs In the manner of this country, but
consume their purchases In the manufacture
of cakea and sweets, of which as a race
they are Very fond. It is very evident that
in stringent financial times these goods will
be the first food abstained from.
As to the charge that Chinese eggs are
hipped here uninspected, he states that
under orders issued by the American Con
sul at Shanghai immediately following the
unflattering success which the initial lots
met with in this country owing to no In
spection all stock leaving Shanghai Is
carefully Inspected by an American doctor,
in addition to the candling done by the
agents of the importing firm.
It has been charged that the Asiatic hen
is a "gutter snipe" and gets most of its
living from manure piles. Mr. McAdam
says this latter product is far too valuable
to be us3d in this manner, as the egg-producing
section of China is synonymous with
the tea-growing belt, and when it Is con
sidered that the farm lands of China have
been tilled continually for over 4000 years
and require constant ' replenishing, manure
is naturally going to be a pretty expensive
"chicken feed." Most of the egg producers
of North China are poor families who count
on the output of their flock for their sub
sistence and in many cases the poultry re
ceive really ' better care than the children
of the family, as they produce revenue and
the latter do not. The principal Item of
food for the Chinese hens Is cull rice,
which Us bought at next to nothing after the
exporters have taken all the stock fit tor
human consumption.
MOHAIR SEASON CLOSING IN WEST
Frier In Eat Are lnchnged African and
Syrian Markets Arc Quiet.
'" A few stray lots of mohair are being
picked up at current prices, but the large
local dealers are showing Jittle interest in
the market novr. The Texas clip has been
to a large extent sent forward on consign
ment, a very little of it having; been our-
chaser! around 27 to S cents. The Eastern
jnerket continues quiet and quotations are
unchanged. Of- the foreign situation, the
Helton Commercial Bulletin says:
"In Yorkshire spinners of mohair are
keeping distinctly out ot the market and
watching the Turkey and Cape new clip
operations with caretul -eyes. Spinners,
however, are able to keep their machinery
well occupied on old contracts and appar
ently are still fairly well covered with raw
materials. Turkey average and Cape firsts
ar in fair supply, but the trade continues
to neglect them.
"Smalt transactions are reported again
at the Cape at ITS'td for kids and 11 lid

portance is yet reported from Constant!

Another Shipment of Apricot - Received,
fine Florida Tomatoes,
The local berry supply, contrary to ex
pectations, was not Increased yesterday,
and the market was fairly steady. Newberg
berries sold at $- for pint crates and $-.u
for quarts. Southern Oregons ranged m
price from $1.75 to $"2.2o. A number of
shipments of Florins were received and sold
at $1 to $1.75, according to quality.
Another lot of apricots arrived and
brought $2.50. They were decidedly better
than the first shipment. Receipts of cher
ries were small. Local gooseberries were
a drug on the market and offered at as low
as 3Vfc cents. The demand for gooseberries
usually opens up when no more are to be
had. Bananas are cleaning up well.
Among the vegetable arrivals was a car
of Florida tomatoes in fine condition. , They
were quoted at $4.50 & 5 per crate.
EGGS OFFERED SOMEWHAT FREER
Butter Steady at Advance Cheese May In
cline Next Week.
The egg market was quoted firm yester
day at 2Q21 cents, case count, but offer
ings were freer than on the preceding day.
Poultry receipts were not large. The
market, however, was still affected by the
liberal arrivals of the preceding day and bot
tom prices were necessary to make clean
up sales. Dressed meats continue dn.L
There were no further developments in
the butter situation. The market for prints
was steady at the advance. Cubes were of
fered at 23 Vt 24 cents. At Seattle cubes
and prints advanced two cents.
The cheese market remains unchanged at
the 16-cent basis. A decline of about one
cent is expected next week, which some
dealers believe will - establish the bottom
quotation for the year.

Business was quiet in all departments of
the local grain market. Not much was

and the undertone of prices was weak
throughout the list. Wheat was quoted about
as formerly, but prices given are largely
nominal. Suyers would not offer over $22
