WOOL BUYING HEAVY Close to Half of Clip Has Changed Hands. COMPETITION IS KEEN Several Sections Closely Sold Up and Number or Scheduled1 Public Sales Ma j Have to Be Abandoned. Wool buying has been carried on in East ern Ore 50 n on a large scale In the past week. At least one-third and possibly one- half of the clip of Oregon has been bought to date. Some sections are closely sold up and It is likely that a number of the ached uled sales will have to be abandoned. Buyers have contracted nearly everything obtainable up to this time, and where grow era have held back It has been with the belief that better prices will prevail at the public sales. About three-fourths of the Heppner clip has been contracted for at prices ranging from 16 .to 17 cents for fine wools. Some few contracts have been made In the Con don territory at a lower basis. Most of the wools at Pilot Rock are being held for the sales days. The larger part of the Shaniko clip is also unsold, as the growers are either asking more than buy ers pay or prefer to take their chances at the public sales. ' A good portion of the Baker County clip has been placed under contract at 15 to 16 cents, and In Harney County a considerable portion of the wool has also changed hands. About 50 per cent of the Wallowa County wools have been sold, Only about a fourth of the Oregon clip has been shorn up to this time. Where shorn the wools are also being readily taken a t prevailing prices. The wools are com ing off much better than in recent years. As a whole, the 1014 clip is probably the best that Oregon has ever produced as to qual ity, condition and color. Besides, the wools are fairly well grown. The baying season In Washington is prac tlcally over. Everything has been cleaned out except In the Ellenaburg section, where out of a total clip of 600.000 pounds from 150,000 to 200.000 pounds have been sold. in Western Idaho contracting has been 'carried on in a limited way at prices rang ing from 15 to 16 cents for ftne wools. WHEAT CROP PROSPECTS ARE BETTER Balk of Northern Grain In Coming Season Will Go to Europe. There was not much demand for wheat yesterday and but little offering. The mar ket was rather weak. Club was not worth over 89 cents, and bluest em was quoted at 2 cents. A few scattered lots on the docks are being cleaned up. It looks as If thus month would wind up the season. Re porta received by dealers from the country as to crop conditions were excellent. In sections where there were good crops last year the stand now Is even better. while In districts that have been poor for years correspondents report the outlook the best It has ever been. At some points yields of 25 to SO bushels to the acre are - 'expected where they ordinarily get ten bushels. If. the wheat crop matures according to the present promise, the Pacific North west may turn out 70.000,000 bushels. In that case there will be about 15.000,000 bushels more to ship than was the case the present season. It is not believed that Oriental business will show much Increase, and California will probably take consid erably less wheat than during the present season, as the crop outlook there is far better than a year ago. It is, therefore, likely , that the bulk of the .surplus North western grain will have to be sent to Eurone. wMch will keep this market on an export basis throughout the greater part of the season. For a number of years past the turn of the year has brought about an in dependent condition in this resnect. The barley and oats markets were dull ana weak. Oate were bought in the coun try on the basis of $33, the lowest price quoiea xor many months past .Local receipts in cars were reported by me laercnants exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay Monday 34 Tuesday 13 Year ago 37 Season to date 15275 Year ago 161'08 1 C 7 11 5597 2-S2 4 3 1577 25SS 2580 1538 210 5 6UGAR MARKET IS AGAIX STRONG Raws Have Upward Turn on Atlantic Sea board burope Buys Cabas. The sugar market has again developed a stronger tone. After an uncertain move ment for several days raws advanced again at New York yesterday. This increases the prospects ot another advance In the refined article. The stimulating feature of the situation irom tne rentier's standpoint is still the ar. livity of Europe in taktng Cubas at rising prices. The Cuban planter seeing that he an find a maaSjl .,. a surplus sugar in Europe, and fortified with easy money, con tinues to withhold offerings except at full prices. Some circles feel tha the advance nas been too rapid, bat on the other hand refiners are compelled to cover themselves aaalnst a possibly heavy consuming move iue country, where invisible sua plies are light. OltEOOX BERRIES MORE PLENTIFUL. rrrsent Week Wlllind Vp Shipment. From California. This week will wind up the California iruwberry season, so far as this market is concerned. Receipts of Oregons are Increasing rapidly and soon the local fruit will shut out the Southern article. Oregon berries sold yesterday all the way from 81.50 to $2.to a crate, according to quality. Alameda berries cleaned up at 82. Half a car Is due today, which will probably end shipments from that quarter. Florin Dol lars ranged In price from 1.25 to 81. 75. Some Jessies from the same place sold as low as bO cents. Vegetable arrivals Included a car of Texas brown onions, which offered at 8 and a car of lettuce. That Oregon can grow artichokes was shown by a sample lot brouKht in by an Italian gardener. These artichokes sold at 1.251.4p a dozen. I'OTATO STOCKS REMAINING. ISO CARS. Srvr,.tj-flve Cents Paid for Best Shipping trude Season Nearly Over. The potato season is almost at a close, and as the end approaches prices are grad ually being elevated. shippers are- offer ing up to 75 cents at country points for the best stock remaining. The Valley la now well cleaned up and the stock that Is left is very much scat tered. Not over 100 cars can be located by shippers, and this supply win probably be exhausted in the next two weeks. The ship ments going out are mostly headed for Cal ifornia points. Only a few cars are being sent to Arizona and Texas. Bank Clearings. Bonk clearings of the Northwestern cities yesterday were as follows; miss 8100.535 Wattle . 2.3M.S29 laeoms. 487.4:15 Spokane T20.341 ,100,040 40.356 Eggs in Demand at Advi There was a strong demand for eggs at 20 '4 cents, case count, with the customary premium for candled. Several shipping or ders were on the market and local con sumption was active. There was a fair supply of poultry, bat buying was not brisk. Former prices were quoted. Driused meats were also j!dt and the previous day's prices prevailed. There were no new developments in dairy produce lines. PORTLAND MABKEI QUOTATIONS, Grain, Flour.
