Cibtihtiih 31ay Ifet Be - Bribed by Home-Mflde Plea and Modern Young. atera Retain Old-Time InBcnnity. "Hearts and .Klowers." if you please, professor! Tempus has fidgeted bea; pardon, fuglted and in' the action of time thereof, another tradition has' been smashed. Completely rained, in fact. ' ' :"' And there-is cause to grieve, for the tradition which has gone into the dis card is one which has lasted since long before we all were boys, or girls, for that matter. Remember, in the old days, when the circus came to town, and you sneaked out the back door, all sflossed up for the day? Remember how you came. Jjjorrie in the afternoon, sloppy "and miiiay-"aBd dirty and pant-Inp-, but happy: happier than you ever had been in your life, simply because you held in one srrimy paw a ticket to the circus? Yes. you had carried water for the elephants. Tou had struggled until your back ached, but you had gained that coveted ticket. And therein conies the.srrief. For the Pells Kioto Circus and Buffalo Bill (himself) are cominar to Portland for two days, next Monday and Tuesday, May 18 and l. and. when it comes Breathe it gently: There will be no water carrying for the elephants! "What's the use?" asks Fred B. Hutchinson, the manager of the circus. "There are hydrants near the lot. and so why break the backs of all the small boys In town?" Logical, but ead. For. to go back to the old days, it would seem that those small boys were willing enough to have their backs broken. However, there is hope for the small boys who haven t the 25 cents neces sary to see the circus. There is always a canvasman who needs a new needle, or a seatman who might be reached through the temptations of home cooked pie, or but trust to the small boy for methods of getting into that place of glory and happiness and saw dust and elephants.
