16 WILLAi MORTON RECEIVES AT 91 Blind Wife of Pioneer, at 81, Able to See Him on His Birthday, Thanks to Fall. OLD MERCHANT HAS SMOKE Suil Run "Water Is His Favorite . William Morton, who entered the commission business in Portland in the Spring1 of '63, was one of the happiest men in Portland yesterday, and Mrs. Morton, who will be 81 in August, was one of the happiest women. They celebrated Mr. Morton's 91st birthday, and from 4 o'clock in the afternoon until 10 in the evening there was a continuous procession of friends calling at their home, 193 Fourth street, to extend congratulations and talk over old times. Both old people are in perfect health, although Mrs. Morton has been blind for some time. Recently she suffered a severe fall, the result of which seems to have been to restore her sight in a measure, for yesterday she declared that she could see her husband quite plainly. nox of CiKars Sampled. As for Mr. Morton, his eyes are still prood, and his handclasp has the vigor of youth, lie was the recipient of a box of cigars from one of his friends and smoked several of them during the day. "Oh, yes, 1 still smoke," he said, puffins' vigorously, "and I drink, too Bull Run water. I can't get enough of it, and the doctor tells me it may have something to do with my good health. I drink at least two glasses before breakfast every morning, and four or five glasses at dinner time. I don't believe I ever pass one of the Benson fountains without stopping for a drink' One of the old friends who called yes terday was Iilalse Labbe, who started a grocery store, at First and Alder streets in 1864. Charles H. Dodd. who established himself in the commission business on Front street, in 1864, was another. J. L. Barnard, who came to Oregon In 1857, but who went East again in 1865, returning to Portland in 1869, was still another. He was in the shipping busi ness on Front street in the early days, and has known Mr. Morton since his return to Portland. Miss Julia Jolin, who has known the Mortons for 20 years, was another caller. Mra. Morton Was Fellow Pedagoelst. Mrs. Ira G. Hottt, who was a school teacher in San Francisco In the '60s at the same time that Mrs. Morton, then unmarried, was teaching the young idea of the then embryo metropolis 'how to shoot, talked over the vicissi tudes of pioneer pedagogy with Mrs. Morton. They recalled with affection the name of Margaret Keith, who taught in the Denman School at San Fran cisco at the same time they were teach ing there. , Among those of the younger gen eration who called to pay their re Bpects to the old couple were Mrs. J. Thorburn Ross and Robert Livingstone. Will F. Morton, a grandson, called with Mrs. Morton in the evening. They live at 533 Belmont street. Mr. Mor ton is employed with Prael, Hegele & Company. G. A. Morton, father of Will F. Mor ton, and one of yesterday's principals, is connected with the firm of Allen & lwis and lives at 515 Kast Ankeny street. So far as is known William Morton is the oldest past grand master of the Oddfellows' Lodge in the world. He Joined Montgomery Lodge No, 3 at Day ton. O.. in the '4i. He was born in Belmont County, Ohio, May 6. 1823. He and Mrs. Morton were married in San l'rancisco 44 years ago. Coming to Portland March 10. 1863, Mr. Morton was bookkeeper and man ager for the commission house of Rich ards & McCraken for nine years. Then be entered the grocery business, which later evolved into the present firm of Wadliams & Co. Later Mr. Morton re turned to the commission business, re tiring 15 years ago. DIVORCE CASE STARTED Colonel AV. M. Inglis Defendant in Wile's Seattle Proceedings. SEATTLE. Wash.. May 6. (Spe cial.! Charging that her husband has lost his affection and regard for her and has humiliated her in the pres ence of others. Mrs. Anna Hughes Inglis today began divorce proceedings in Superior Court against Colonel Wil liam M. Ingils, former superintendent of the Seattle Athletic Club, well known in local and state politics and Colonel of the Second Regiment, N. G. W. The couple were married April 29. 1903. and have one child, a boy 10 years old. The community property consists of lots on Rainier boulevard and a quan tity of household goods. Mrs. Inglis asks for a decree of divorce, the cus tody of the child and 100 per month permanent alimony. BOYS SEEK ADVENTURE Oregon City Lads Get Home After Four Days of Sightseeing. OREGON CITY. Or, May 6. (Spe cial.) The past few days have been full of adventure to Willie H Joseph Zadinaker, who were brought back to their parents in Oregon City after spending four days seeing the world. The boys left here Friday afternoon. With a stolen boat, they went to Port land. There they sold that boat for $2 and left for Vancouver, Wash Sat urday morning. Sunday they decided to return to Clackamas County. The schooner Salem is due from Newcastle, N. S. W., and the British bark Howth has been on the way from Shields, England, since December 6. HAXS CHARTERED FOR GRAIN Erbrin Crosses Bar on First Slant Toward Port of Ipswich. Grain tonnage listed for Portland loading: was augmented yesterday through the addition of the German bark Hans, which is to proceed here from Santa Rosalia. The vessel put out from Hamburg: March 4 with gen eral cargo for the Mexican port. The Norwegian bark Erbrin was towed to sea from Astoria yesterday, grain-laden for Ipswich. Stetson's Capacity Will Be Considerably Enlarged AViicn. Steamer . Makes Its Next Trip . to Alaska. New stunts are already being intro duced by the Dodge Steamship Com pany in the operation of the Portland Alaska line and one that is being out lined is to decK over the forward deck of the steamer J. B. Stetson, which sailed last night for Skagway. Joseph Supple had men aboard the vessel yes terday measuring for the work and it is to -be done when conditions wil1 al low the Stetson to reach here a .few days earlier than usual. With the vessel decked over it is estimated she can carry about 400 tons more cargo, her underdeck capacity at present being about 600 tons. More steerage accommodations will also be provided and the deck will likewise serve as a promenade. Certain cargo not subject to damage by weather con ditions will be carried there. Captain Herriman had two new sub ordinates when the vessel got away last night, James W. Creighton. son of a former well-known steamboatman of the city, being signed as purser to suc ceed George C. Cummins, and Steward Vaughn, formerly in charge of the nose city's saloon, presided over the culinary branch, relieving "Billy" Holt. The vessel had a fair cargo and large list of passengers. COLUSA'S PURSER SAYS SEXOR "San Francisco" ' Drops Mexican "Ilombre" in I earning Tongue. Captain Lobez, of the British steamer Colusa, which sails tomorrow to the soutli coast, says that Purser S. F Casey, known as "San Francisco" Casey, among his intimates, is losing his sailorman's antagonism toward the followers of Huerta and Carranza, which resulted from previous ungen tlemanly treatment of "gringoes" In Mexico. The best evidence of Casey's change, says Captain Lobez, was shown on the last voyage of the Colusa, when he addressed the Mexican laborers working on cargo as "senor," whil heretofore they had to be good work ers if even called "horabre." The British steamer Strathalbyn, under charter to the China Import & Export Lumber Company, reached the river yesterday from the Golden Gate and left up. The British steamer Frankmount got to sea with a lumber cargo for Melbourne. Two vessels that brought large car goes for the Dodge line got away last night, the Davenport going to San Francisco with lumber and the Francis H. Leggett heading for Grays llarbor to work lumber for the south. . Delayed at Skamokawa for two weeks because of having grounded there while on the way from Portland to Alsea Bay, the gasoline carrier Nen omasho has returned here. The En terprise and Delia are also in port from Coast harbors. As arrangements had been concluded to berth the steamer Breakwater at Municipal dock No. 1. because of the strike of longshoremen that would pre vent them being employed 'on any por tion of Ainsworth dock, she was made fast there last evening on arrival from Coos Bay and will sail from there as well, as cargo had been delivered for her in advance of the strike being settled.
