    WILL OPEN SEASON
First Oregon Wool Sale to Be
at Juntura.
DATE SET FOR MAY 18
Malheur Town Will Have 1,500,
000 Pounds to Dispose Of.
Second Sale to Be in June.
Secretary Hoke's Views.
O-wing to the larse amount of wool to be
offered at Juntura, Or., this year, sales date
have been assigned to that place by Secre
tary John G. Hoke, or the Oregon Wool
rrowen' Association. The first sale will
be on May IS, which will also be the first
publio sale In Eastern Oregon, and the sec
ond will be on June 10. For these sales
1,500,000 pounds of wool will be stored
there.
The situation Is favorable, according to
Mr. Hoke, who says:
"The prospects are very good. The weather
lias been very fine on lambing and the mild
Winter insures a good wool clip. Sheep axe
In fine condition, as the range could be no
better. Had we received a just tariff at
the hands of Congress we would be In good
shape. Wool is not selling at prices that
will encourage the woolgrower in this coun
try. When wool of Eastern Oregon aver
ages 20 cents per pound, then we can run
sheep at a profit. Some, however, are mak
ing money, but they are few in number. This
year should be very good, owing to the fine
"Winter and the heavy lamb crop."
TRADE TIRES OF GREEN BERRIES
Day's Receipts Are Not Large, but Market
Is Heavy Cherries 1'irm.
Strawberry receipts were not large yester
day, but the market was rather heavy. Buy
ers are evidently growing tired of half-ripe
stock and until a better quality of fruit ar
rives an active market at good prices can
not be expected. Jessies sold on the street
at $1.50 & 1.75 and Dollars at $2 2.10.
A car of Alameda berries started for Port
land yesterday and will reach this city Sat
urday morning. These berries are of large
. Bize, which makes it necessary to pack them
in quart baskets. They will open at $1.85
'J a. crate and will be packed in the new
standard Oregon crates of 16 quarts, weigh
ing one and a quarter pounds to the basket.
Shippers In that section promise a car a
day from now on.
Only a limited suppy of Oregon berries
came in yesterday. The best sold at $4.80
a crate.
Cherries are holding up firmly and are
till readily bringing $2.75 a box.
Another shipment of local gooseberries
was received yesterday. They were quoted
at lo cents a pound, but were hard to sell.
The gooseberries so far received have been
of the lze of currants and should have been
left on the bushes longer.
Vegetable receipts included a mixed cat
of Texas onions and a car of lettuce.
CALIFORNIA LIBERAL WHEAT BUYER
Heavy Shipments Made From. Northern
I'orts in Fast Month.
California continues to be the principal
market for Northern wheat. In the month
ended yesterday shipments of wheat and
flour from Portland and Puget Sound ports
to California equalled l,037.4u9 bushels. This
is about the same amount that has been
shipped to the southern state each month
since tho firsf of the year and there is every
reason, to believe the California demands
daring the remaining months of the season
will not be lessened. Even without other
buying this should take care of the surplus
wheat left in the Northwest.
The market yesterday, aside from Cali
fornia business, was quiet and firmer prices
were quoted.
The movement of wheat to tidewater is
decreasing as stocks in the interior clean
up. Local receipts In April of" this and last

WILL MAKE BID FOR ALASKA TRADE
Creamery Association Will Send Agent to
Northern Territory.
Tn order to take care of the Increasing
output of the country creameries of Oregon,
the Northwest Butter &. Produce- Company,
an association of country creameries, hopes
to develop a substantial trade- in South
eastern Alaska. To that end a salesman
will be sent into the territory now served
by the Portland-Alaska steamship line.
A special meeting of the stockholders ot
the company wJJJ. .. le:;'tield in Portland on
May 11 at which time the capitalization of
the company will be doubled and definite
plans made for operating on a larger scale.
It i the plan of the association to Install
an ice-making refrigerating plant large
enough to take care of the future business
of tho company for some years to come.
Also it is planned to enlarge the scope of
the company's business by dealing in and
making outright purchases of eggs, poultry,
pork and veal, for which there is always a
ready market in Portland.
sgs May Hell No Loner.
Ejtg dealers believe the market has
reached bottom for this season. Receipts
liave declined considerably in the past two
weeks, and the current demand, with a lit
tle storing:, is sufficient to take care of the
arrivals. The market was steady yesterday
at lSVi cents, case count, and good candled
stock brought 20 cents.
roultry waa weak, but no lower. Good
bens sold at IT'a cents, and well-grown
broilers were quoted at CO cents. Dressed
meats were unchanged.
Dairy produce was steady at former
prices.
Higher Frier l-aid for Lew is. ton Wool.
1.EWISTOX. Idaho., April U0. (Special.)
Woolbuyers in this district are paying
froi one to three cents a pound more this
year than I he prices ot last year. G. H.
liiliuy. of Boston, who is making contracts
for some of the thoicc fleeces, said the
sheep of this district produce a far better
uuality of wool than in many places of the
West. The reason for this, he savs. Is be
cause the flocks have excellent, clean pas
ture, which are comparatively free from
burs and sticky weeds. Also the sheep are
herded on the hills and mountains, where
there is but littlo aand. thus making the
Uiture of better quality.

FROST DAMAGE SLIGHT
SO PIRT11EK IXJtRY TO FRl'IT IS
FE.UIED.
Crops Promise to Be Large, Especially
ot Apples Soft Kruit Blos
soms Thinned.
SPOKANE. Wash., April SO. (Spe
cial.) rrequent frosts throughout
practically all sections of the North
west have threatened the fruit trees
for the past two weeks, but, although
individual growers in certain parts of
the different districts have suffered
some loss, the damage generally has
been negligible, according to reports
that have been received. It appears,
in fact, that most sections will have
enormous crops, especially of apples.
Soft fruits were most affected, but in
many instances the result was a mere
thinning of blossoms.
Despite several frosty nights be
tween April 20 and April 30, the Yaki
ma Valley has accounted for little in
jury except in individual cases in the
lowlands. Strawberries in the extreme
eastern end were affected, but not to
serious extent. The Wenatchee and
North Central Washington district was
untouched except for a slight hurt to
cherries, although several nights were
quite cold. Below Walla Walla along
the Washington-Oregon state line cher
ries again were hit, and in the north
end of the district in some unfavorably
situated orchards other soft fruits, as
well, showed evidences of frost-bite,
while the apple crop of a few orchards
also was materially cut.
In the Spokane and Northeastern
Washington section no damage at all to
apples has been reported. Sweet cher
ries and peaches, of which there Is
only a small acreage, were killed, bat
late cherries and pears escaped. In the
Garfield district in Eastern Washing
ton some effect ivas noted, and in
Northern Idaho, it is stated, the early
irost. some time ago dealt cherries a
severe blow. Almost imperceptible dam
age has been reported by Hood River
so far, except on the earlier straw
berry tracts which were in bloom. Aft
er the April 20 frost it was said that

CHICAGO. April 30. Development of a
good export demand for new-crop Winter
sades had a rallying Influence today on the
t- heat market as a whole. In the end prices
were firm at the same as last night to ttc
higher. Other speculative articles showed
a net gain all around, corn 4c to c. oats
U" to He and provisions 5 to 20c.
Export sales of new-crop Winter wheat
here aggregated bOO.000 bushels. Improved
feeling on the bull side of the whest mar
ket was preceded by a temporarily suc
cessful drive by the besrs.
Important covering by conspicuous shorts
turned corn prices up-grade after an early
period of weakness. Efforts to dislodge
holders of May options were for the most
part a failure, although deliveries tomor
row promise to be large.
Oats had a rally with com and wheat. It
was said most of the deliveries ot oats
would be taken by shippers.
Provisions felt the effect of the revived
strength in grain. During a considerable
part of the day, however, prices suffered
from the weakness of the hog market, and
from a disposition by packers to sell on the
uaru spots.
