11 SHOW PLANS IDE Grant of $4000 Assures As sembling of Land Products. LARGER SCOPE PROPOSED Winners Must Give Association Prlvllcgo or Exhibiting at San Francisco Vnder Producers Xames Date Xot Choseirf Granting- or $4000 to the .Pacific Korthwest Land Products Show by the County Commissioners on Friday as sures the holding of a land show this Fall, according; to John S. Beall, presi dent of the Land Show Board. It is proposed to make the show this Fall a means of gathering- an adequate ex hibit for the Panama-Pacific Exhibi tion at San Francisco. The prizes to be offered this year will be far more generous than those at the show two years ago, and are ex pected to bring the best that the Northwest has to offer. It will be specified that all prize-winning fruits and vegetables shall be at the disposal of the Land Show for exhibition at San Francisco, to be exhibited, however, under the name of the original ex hibitor. The place of holding the exhibit has been a serious problem, but it is under stood that a place sufficiently large to accommodate the exhibits has been pro cured by W. J. Hofmann, chairman of the committee on place of meeting. The plan to hold a combined exhibition with the manufacturers will demand a larger floor space than has been avail able heretofore. Lack of adequate space was one of the factors leading to the determination riot to hold the annual show last Fall. The date has not been set, but it is probable that the latter part of Oc tober will be chosen, as fruits and vege tables are at their best then, and the county and state fairs are out of the way. The show two years ago was held in November, but it is believed an earlier date would suit all concerned better. A joint meeting 'of the board of directors of the Pacific Northwest Land Products Show and the directors of the Manufacturers' Association will be held at the Commercial Club Fri day to make plans for the show and arrange for the employment of a director, the raising of the funds necessary and for the immediate rati fication of prospective exhibitors of the new plans. New Photo Plays Open Majestic. TWO big, gripping dramas and ft roaring farce-comedy make up the picture offering at the Majestic Theater. The "Leech of Industry" is one of the most powerful plays of cap ital and labor yet produced, and will prove a real treat while shown. It deals with the "everlasting triangle." two men and a woman. The story is one of intense dramatic power. The real struggle of industry is felt in this play. One of the greatest moments is when ' the train bearing Romanoff matches its speed with that of an au tomobile, and wins. All through the play one feels the leech. "The Little Madon'na" is another play of merit. It tells of an artist and a little girl of the slums. The father, a drunkard, dashes a Madonna image to the floor. Later, when attempting to steal from the artist, he is con fronted by a woman dressed as a Ma donna posing for the artist. A sparkling comedy is "Mike, the Avenger." Miss Betty Anderson, the charming prima donna. and Miss Esther Sundquist, the clever little vio linist, conclude the programme with their musical numbers. Columbia. THAT the butterfly life brings nothing but trouble and sorrow is the lesson forcibly conveyed in "The Floor Above,' a tremendously sensa tional four-part Reliance drama, which opened at the Columbia yesterday. It is a play with action, a clever plot did character portrayal. There is a mystery which a clever young detect ive solves, winning the girl he loves and at the same time saving another girl from her frivolous ways. Pictures of Portland's business men at work on the Columbia River Highway Saturday are shown. They are ludicrous, many prominent citizens being featured. In "A Bath-House Beauty," a Key- "Fatty" Arbuckle appears in the title role. Harker S. Perkins, organist, plays the overture. "Poet and Peas- ani, ay oupie, wuii;ii is muuu en joyed. One or more of the candidates for Queen of the Rose Festival will appear In the Columbia each night, beginning Tuesday night and continuing until the end of the "contest. Pple's. AT the People's Theater yesterday "Brewster's Millions," the thrilling and humorous comedy drama, which is now a moving; picture drama in five parts, with Edward Abeles. the orig inal star of the piece, playing the vole of Monty, was a big success. It Is a comedy of numerous Incidents and it plays a tune of Joy on your laugh organ. Monty is left one million dollars by an uncle, and before he had time to count the million, another uncle bequeathed him seven millions, on condition that he spend the first mil lion within a year, does not squander the million and yet possess nothing of value at the end of the year. The comedy starts with a ripple and ends with a roar. It is a fascinating comery drama of millions of dollars. ontaining a laugh or a tear for every dollar spent. It is splendidly staged, and has beautiful photography. The play will run the entire week at the Peoples. Star. T HE Star Theater opened its new JL bill yesterday with "The Impers onator." a three-part drama, as a head liner. The play Is an exceptionally good one. It is cleverly worked out and the action Is swift and consecutive. The plot is woven about two girls, one of whom, as a joke and partly because she lacked the beauty required, gives her place to a beautiful girl for a short while. She becomes jealous and exposed the impersonator, causing much discomfiture, especially to the young Congressman who was in love with her. The pictures are exquisite, many having been taken In and around Wash lngton. John Bunny appears in the funniest comedy imaginable. "The Tangled Tangolsts. Bunny attempts to learn the tango, causing much discomfiture for the girl teacher, and much laughter for those who saw him. Bunny has the reputation of being the funniest PORTLAND ABSTRACTS OF TITLE. Escape Made Frtn Steamer Breakwater at Night When Cinard, Enronle to Salem With Chance, Becomes III. While the steamer Breakwater was off the Columbia bar at 4 o'clock yes terday morning, Paul E. Hassell, s.n insane man, jumped overboard. The fatal accident, it is said, was not re ported to the ship's officera until two hours after the man had disappeared. The weather was squally and it was raining at the time Hassell disappeared. No one saw him jump overboard. He was in charge of A. J." Cameron, a keeper, who had been sent to Coquille to take the man to the State Insane Asylum at Salem. Mr. Cameron said afterwards that he was seasick at the time Hassell arose from his berth and left the stateroom. He said that his charge had been act ing rationally and he had no suspicion that the man intended to do anything desperate. As soon as he had recovered from his seasickness Mr. Cameron looked for the man on deck. Not finding him anywhere. Mr. Cameron says he began a thorough serch of the vessel. Fail ing to locate his charge he then re: ported his suspicion to the ship's of ficers. A search of the steamer failed to discover the man. News From Oregon Port?-. A.STORIA,- Or. April 26.
