The second round of the Winters
escheat case, brought by the State of
Oregon against claimants as heirs to
the estate of Henry D. Winters, Port
land recluse -who died In June, 1911,
was begun before Circuit Judge Mor
row yesterday. When there were no
available jurors 1 of examination late
yesterday Judge Morrow adjourned
court until this morning, when the Im
paneling of the Jury will be con
tinued. When the trial was commenced two
weeks ago yesterday it was agreed
that the same jury should try the entire
case, but evidence which the court held
might have been prejudicial against the
other heirs was brought out at the
hearing of the Purdy claim, which was
denied last week. On motion by Judge
Lionel Webster, appearing for one set
of claimants. Judge Morrow discharged
the first jury and ordered another one
selected to try the claims of the other
litigants.
As the case will be presented to the
Jury, the 102 claimants probably will
divide themselves into five or possibly
six groups, each claiming relationship
with Henry D. Winters, whose property
Is in dispute through as many different
families.
Klfty-alx Claim Same Man.
The greatest number of claimants, 56,
charged that they are the heirs of
Henry D. Winters through William
"Winters, whose home was in New York.
These 56 claimants live now In Iowa,
Kansas, Indiana and Oklahoma and are
represented at the trial by attorneys

Clark & Clark.
Twenty-one claimants, whose homes
are In New York, claim the property
through Elisha Winters, whose home
they say, was In New York. They are
represented at the trial by Attorneys

eleven claimants, who . are repre
sented by Attorneys Manning, White &
Hitch, Barge Leonard and George
Gearhart, claim that Henry D. Winters
was born in 1829. his father being John
Winters, whose home was in New York.
Attorneys U'Ren & Scheubel, of Oregon
City, represent litigants who claim that
Henry D. Winters' father was Henry
D. Winters, Sr., who had two brothers,
John and Michael Winters, all of whom
lived In New York state.
Jury to Be Completed Today.
Attorneys Emmons & Webster, of
Portland, and Langan & Mendenhall, of
Oakland, represent seven litigants In
Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and Cali
fornia who claim the property through
Lewis Cline Winters, of New York
State.
According to Attorneys Moser & Mc
Cue, who represent four claimants,
Henry D. Winters' father was named
Claus Winters. These claimants charge
that his home was In Germany.
In all 11 firms of attorneys represent
claimants to the property, all of whom
are opposed by District Attorney
Evans and Attorneys John K. Logan
and Ralph Citron, counsel lor the
fctate. -
When the jury Is completed today.
Judge Morrow will take up first the
claims of those litigants represented by
Attorneys Manning White & Hitch,
Barge Leonard and George Gearhart.
30 IS LIMIT OF CLASS
Public Speaking Extension Course at
Pacific University Popular.
So many persons are registered for
the public speaking extension course
of -Pacific University, to open at the
Portland Young Men's Christian Asso
ciation this evening, that it has been
decided to limit the registration to 30.
The cass will be conducted by Pro
lessor W. G. Harrintrton. of Paolflo
University, and will meet in the Y. M.
C. A. auditorium at 7:30 o'clock.
This course is to consist of six les
sons and will be conducted under the
auspices of the Y. M. C. A. -educational
department. Professor Harrington is
an - experienced teacher, a member of
the bar and an alumnus of Boston
University and the Emerson College of
Oratory. He has had great success In
training college orators and debaters
for Intercollegiate contests.
YOUNG WIFE FILES CHARGE
Husband of 70 Accused of Trying to
Poison Mate, 2 5.
"May and December met in Municipal
Court yesterday, when Mrs. John G.
Minns, 25 years old, faced her 70-year-
old husband and accused him of in
tending to poison her with arsenic and
blow her up with dynamite. They have
been separated, and Minns' said his
whole object in going to 1481 East
Nineteenth street, where she Is stay
ing, is that he wished to see their child.
Mrs. Minns said her husband stole
the family Bible, which was given her
by her Bible class In Australia. He
denied It. They were married In St.
Helens. Judge Stevenson ordered
Minns to keep away from his wife and
not annoy her.
