Business in increasing in the wool market
as shearing progresses at pointH east of the
mountains, and In the next week or two
trade is expected to be very active. Several
of the buyers have gone over Into, Utah,
where a little wool remains unsold, but they
irlll be back In Oregon next week.
Shearing is under way on a large scale
round Arlington, where Smythe Bros, are
removing the clip from their big band of
25.000 sheep. No word was received yes
terday of selling in that section, but buyers
are on the ground and developments re
looked or.
Several clips of later shorn Yakima, wools
vere bought yesterday by Isidore Koshland,
cf this city. The purchases, which were of
tine wools, were made In the Snnnyslde and
Mabton sections at prices ranging from 12
to 13' cents.
A number of important Idaho clips have
been contracted for In the past few days,
particularly those of Ormsby, Sklllern, Scott,
Anderson and Bettls, In the Boise and Hailey
districts. The prices paid were from 15 to
17 cents.
In the Willamette. Valley operations have
been limited, as not much shearing has been
done yet, owing to the 'unsettled weather.
The few clips purchased have brought from

ORDERS FOB WHEAT ARE NOW 8MAIX
With Demand Slack, Market Has an Kasler
Undertone.
The week opened with the wheat market
as Inactive as last week's. The demand
was light and prices were more or less
nominal. Although stocks are" small, the
slackness of the inquiry tends to have a de
pressing effect on values, and this Is In
creased by the excellent crop prospects and
the certainty of an early harvest. Comment
ing on the general situation in the world's
wheat market, Broomhall says:
'World's shipments are fairly liberal, con
sidering the smallness from India and Ar
gentina, while Russia, Danube and North
American contribution is considered liberal,
in view of the fact that, navigation is not
fully reopened. The total weekly shipments,
however, are equal to estimated require
ment, which may safely be placed at 12,
000.000 bushels, and even this level Is not
unlikely to be surpassed, as the demand
from Germany and low countries, also Medi
terranean countries and France, are large
and perhaps the demand from the United
Kingdom may prove large during the Spring
and Summer. Iarge buying has been held in
abeyance for a considerable time, but may
revive at any time, probably when stimu
lated by adverse crops reports. Continued
mailer shipments from Argentina and India
and smaller shipments from Australia from
now on should more or less offset the larger
aupplies from Russia,, Danube and North
America, and the bulk of the demand will
be thrown upon countries where holders are
firm. "Where markets are sensitive, much de
pends on the progress of the new European
crops. - Russian holders are sure to- be slow
sellers unless the new crop promises well."
The official Russian crop report, as given
by Broomhall. shows, the wheat crop to be
62,000.000 bushels over the previous est!
mate and more than 200,000,000 bushels over
last year's outturn.
Reports of the new Russian crop are uni
formly favorable. Snow has fallen on sev-
eral occasions recently, and this has added
to the moisture as the weather generally Is
mild. Arrivals at ports are Increasing and
most of the rivers are now open to traffic
and larger receipts are expected shortly.
Prices for wheat hold steady, with Mediter
ranean countries absorbing.
Local receipts, in cars, were reported by
the Merchants' Exchange as follows:

No strawberries were received yesterday
but a car that arrived from Los Angeles
Sunday was available, and sold well at
former prices. Another car is due from
that place today.
The vegetable market was well snnniisd
The day's receipts included two cars each
et cabbage, lettuce and mixed vegetables,
the latter containing; asparagus,- peas and
new potatoes. A car of Florida tomatoes
is due today. Vegetables of all kinds were
good demand, and prices were generally

Hold Steady.
There was . a stronc and active cattle
market at North Portland yesterday, and
better prices prevailed than have been
current for (tome time past. The hog mar
ket eased off. heep trade was lighter
than- usual on Monday. There was a good
run of about 63 carloads.
Cattle trade was the feature of the
day's operations. About 34 loads of steers
were disposed of, nearly half of which
brought better than 8 cents. Two loads
were sold at $8.23, four at $8.20 and hall
a dozen at $8.13. The bulk of steer sales
were from $7.90 to $8.13. Cows and bulls
were taken at former "prices.
The hog market was about 15 cents under
last week's level. The top for the day
was $s.7o and tho bulk of sales were at
$8.00 to $S.B3.
Prices realized In the sheep house did
not equal last week's. Wethers sold from
3.50 to $6.50 and a load of lambs brought
$6.75.
Recepits were: 1101 cattle, BO calves, 1592
hogs and 1002 sheep.

N'KW YORK. April 20. The decline In
stocks continued today and another string
of low records for the year, numbering
nearly a score, was recorded. In the list
were Reading. Union Pacific and Steel.
At the opening, the market was under
pressure and it lost ground rapidly. A rally
ensued, which 1 restored quotations to a level
w-ith the preceding close, or above, but
during the afternoon the downward awing
was resumed. Distinct weakness appeared
on tnis movement, ana some or the prom
lnent issues, including Union Pacific. North
ern Pacific. Reading and Lehigh Valley lost
2 to 3 points.
The -Mexican crisis was generally referred
to as the predominating bearish Influence
The news tickers devoted a large part of
their service to Washington dispatches tell
ing of warlike preparations. The situation
presented an unusual opportunity for the
bears, and they utilized It.
Oil stocks were particularly weak. The
members of the Standard Oil grotlp on curb
were forced down 1 to 20 points, coinct-
dentally with another cut in the price of
crude OIL
In - tho bond market prices were lower
after - some Irregularity. Rock Island col
laterals made a 3-point advance, only to
lose it. New York Railways Adjustment 5s

Instructions were received yesterday
by Deputy District Attorney Murphy
to begin suit against 37 more corpora
tions which have failed to pay the
license fee, and the collection of pen
alty and interest for the delinquency.
Since the first list of delinquent cor
porations was published last week, IS
have paid their fees and penalty. Hep
uty Murphy said, and 15 have said
they would, pay without suit. Seven
of the corporations listed are
rupt. Deputy Murphy Bald, and
of them are out of business.

Wheat held comparatively firm in view
of the corn weakness, but at the last there
was rather free selling on the part of the
floor traders. Crop reports were In the
main favorable, although noticeable damage
by Russian fly was reported in Ohio and In
diana and there was need ot rain in Nebraska.
Active covering by shorts upheld the
outs market.
There wss virtually no support for pro
visions.- Corn weakness carried the mar
ket down to a point where stop-loss orderj
left no chance for any course but a drastic
cleanout.

A peculiar accident happened on the
road between John Day and Canyon
City Friday night, when a horse, rid
den by Roland Belshaw. alarmed at
the noise of an auto, operated by Ches
ter Shields, reared and came down with
both front feet in the back seat of the
auto. Belshaw was thrown and the
horse in freeing himself, badly demol
ished the rear of the machine. Neithes
of the boys nor the horse were Injured.
Vador, Wash., Resident Dies.
VADER, Wash., April 20. (Special.)
John Curtis, aged 83. died here at the
home of his daughter. Mrs. Amelia
Decker. Mr. Curtis was born in New
York. He married Hannah Lincoln
Maples and to them eight children
were born, six daueiiters and two sons.
The wife and .seven of the children
have passed away. Mrs. Decker being
the only survivor of the family. Klght
years ago Mr. Curtis came to Ljttle
Falls and has since resided with his
daughter. ,
