Despite Good Description Alleged Ac complice of Counterfeiters la at Larere and at Work. SALEM. Or.. April 9. (Special.) The police of Salem and a mysterious woman, who has passed numerous oounterfelt 50-cent pieces here, have been, playing- hide and seek, for sev eral days. Several spurious half dollar were passed at a State-street store early In the week and the proprietor, after an investigation, ""f otrad--that they had fceen left with him by a woman. The clerk, who waited on the customer nave the police a description o the woman and they took the trail but with no niccess that day. The next day the owner of another tore was victimised In similar fash ion and he also complained to the po lice. A woman, evidently the same one who passed the bogus coin at the first store, was accused, but still there was no definite clew. The police found that, other persons had received half dollars that were not made in United States mints. and today still another merchant reponea that a woman had passed counterfeit rnins at his- store. It 1 not believed that the bogus monev was made In. this city or coun iv. but the theory of the police is that the woman is a confederate of the counterfeiters and was sent here to 3ispose of as much of the bogus money as possible. All the coins were print ed in the same mold and were made by an expert. BEGGAR CAMPAIGN, OPENS Alms Seekers in Vancouver Must Work on Streets or Go to Jail. VANCOUVER. Wash., April 9. (Spe cial.) Begging on the streets will not be tolerated by the police and any man arrested for asking alms will be com pelled to work on the streets if he is able-bodied and if not he will be re quired to serve a jail sentence. Van couver is infested with scores of beg gars. A man with a wooden leg stood on a corner today and stopped a num ber of pedestrians. The police were watching and every time the man got a coin he would retire to a near by sa loon, get a drink, and then return to the street, asking for more money. feellwood V. C. T. V. Meet Today. BOOKLET IS DENOUNCED Commercial Club Members Tread on Pamphlet Ignoring Northwest. A magnificent booklet with colored pictures of the Panama-Pacific Expo sition and maps showing the railroads that lead from the East to San Fran cisco issued by a typewriter company. is being severely criticised on the ground that the great Northwest is ignored. It Is pointed out that while Portland and Seattle are printed on the map showing some of the continental railroads, but Spokane is evidently too insignificant to be marked. The booklet Is entirely devoted to advertising California. At the luncheon in -honor of Xoui8 TV. Hill at the Commercial Club yes terday a number of the members ex pressed their Indignation by throwing the booklet on the floor and treading It under foot- Washington Teachers Will Meet. OEENCO, Or., April 9 Special.) The Tegular monthlv meeting of the A Silk Season This is to be a season of silks. Silk suits and silk dresses are of the prevailing mode. Look through the advertise ments of our leading shops as they appear in The Oregonlan and see for yourself the bewildering variety of silken fabrics that are awaiting your selection. And the ribbons and laces and garnitures that go with them surely, never were accessories bo tempting. Simply reading of them in general creates a. desire for In numerable pretty things. Never theless, if you are wise, you will first carefully consider in particular the descriptions and prices an nounced in The Oregonlan and make your purchases when you have determined just what will serve your purpose best.
