THE HORXTXG. OREGONIATT. TIITJIlSn,VY, AriUL 9, 1914. 19 MOHAIR SALES FEW Growers Are Holding Back for Later Prices. DEALERS NOW PAYING 27 Larger Part or Oregon Clip Has Been Sheared, but Only Limited Quan tity Has Been Marketed. Eastern Trade Slow. (lami Tirozress has been made in the hearing of goatB in the Willamette Valley, but not much of a start has been made yet in the matter of opening up the mar ket. A. Plentiful supply of mohair Is on hand, but little of it has been marketed. The growers are holding back because of the prices offered, -which they consider are not what they will be later in the season They are influenced evidently by the strength shown in the wool market, and by the fact that in past years mohair prices have advanced after the opening. The limited quantities of mohair that are . coming on the local market are being taken at 27 cents. Only a few dealers and Jbeculators are operating so far, and they " assert that the prices being paid here show them a loss in comparison with the Eastern market. Some rather pessimistic letters have been received from the East. The plush mills are not anxious to take on Western hair, claiming they can lay down Imported hair of averaaro quality at less than American prlres. There is no doubt that the business in car plush, as In all other railroad equipment material Is at standstill, and this affects the demand for coarse grades of mohair. Coat shearing Is now under way In Texas. but no large quantities arc yet available I' the markets there, and no sales, on which values can be based, have been reported. In the East trade is inactive and prices are steady and unchanged, with a moderate demand for small lots of graded hair. The Commercial Bulletin says of foreign market conditions: "Spinners in Yorkshire are reported as fairly well occupied on old orders but spot business is of small proportions. Some further transactions in the better hair are reported at Constantinople at full recent rates but large quantities of fine hair are not available there. However, the new clip Is Just beginning to come to market and sup plies will be very largely augmented In the near future. No news oU moment is heard from the Cape." holdings, withdrawing them from the mar ket until better prices are obtainable. Trading was con siderably heavier than during the unnatural ly dull markets at the opening of the week. A violent slump in Canadian Pacific gave the market a setback at the opening. The sweepinff reduction in freight rates ordered by the Canadian Railway Commission led to large offerings of the stock. It was forced under 200 for the first lime since 1911. show ing a loss of 7 points at the day's low price. London and Montreal sold Canadian Pa cific, and other shares were unloaded for foreign account. Prices sagged at the opening and bearish traders seized tiie opportunity to offer stocks. Emboldened by the apathetic re ception yesterday of the strong crop report, which seemed to show that the market was In no mood to respond to bullish influences, the shorts put out new lines in a freer man ner than had been observed during the cautious speculative operations recently. After a general decline of small propor tions, the market stiffened for a time under the lead of the coalers, which were stimu lated by Lackawanna's victory in the anti trust suit. KV WOOL NOW SELUXi IN KAST Arizona 1914 Clip Is Already on Market at Boston. Western wool of tlio new 4-lip is betn rushed to the Eastern markets, where a acute shortage of spot supplies Is beginning to be felt. Sales have been made at Bos ton of niw Arizona wools and 1011 clips from Nevada will be available there in a fjw days. New Oregon wool 'Is on tire way to Boston. Commenting on the .market prospects, the Commercial Bulletin, of that city, says: "The eyes of the trade aro glued str-nlght 3head at the moment and the great ques tion Is. 'What will the future show? Natur ally enough, those houses which have made Iwrre contracts in the West refuse to see anything but a rosy-hued future, while houses with little wooi on hand are bound . to view the future with more or less dls - favor. ; " It would seein, however, as if the prices being pziid In tho country for the new clip at tho moment are fuly as high as the situation warrants and there are those who think that the prices being paid in the territory section today are high Enough to warrant a eliarp competition on yarns from abroad with the advent of the new cloth season. "At the present moment there is ne gain saying the strength of the market, although admittedly the present situation is some what fictitious, owing to . the scarcity of supplies. Manufacturers are not well sup plied, as it general rui. with rsiw material and should substantial duplicate orders come forward on the high stasis at which goods have been placed since the openings, it would undoubtedly keep prices firm and pos aibiy a bit higher, but everyone is agreed that t here is no possibility of a runaway mn rket for wool and thru opera t ions from now on cannot be too cautiously conducted.
