Farmers Cease to Offer and
Dealers' Stocks Are Slim.
DEMAND FROM SOUTH
Trade AVitH Orient Is Not Stimulated
by Reduction in Freights.
Japan May Buy Later
- in Season.
The reduction in freights to the Orient
haa in no vay stimulated the demand for
wheat and shippers do not believe the cut
will have any effect on the movement. It
is questioned whether a further reduction of
SO cents in the rates would help much.
There has been some inquiry from Japan
for wheat prices, but the Orientals show
no indication of buying now. They loaded
"up heavily with wheat tn January and Feb
ruary, but it is not likely that the supply
. trill last throughout the season, and ship
pers believe the Japanese will be in the
market again in April or May if the freight
situation Is satisfactory.
There was demand from California, but
dealers had put little wheat to offer. Orders
were filled, as far as possible, out of stocks
in hand, and more could have been sold,
but scpplies could not be obtained In the
country. In fact, farmers have ceased en
tirely to offer wheat, at either high or low
prices. The trade In general is, therefore,
of a most un satisfactory nature, for which
the smallness of stocks in the Northwest is
responsible. The market is firm In tone, but
prices are more or less nominal.
Trade was very quiet in the coarse cereals.
Oats were quoted weak at $2X50. There i
was almost no demand for barley and none
".was offered for sale.

KOKHIGX MOHAIR MARKETS BETTER.
Spinners More Anxious to Buy Turkey and
Cape Supplies.
- Goat sheariug.is general throughout the
Willamette Valley, and the clip is coming
off In fine shape, according to reports re
ceived here. Several small lots of hair have
reached this city, but tho market Is not yet
established.
; The Kantern mohair market is Inactive, as
regards both domestic and Imported hair.
Tory little of the Texas Fall clip is now left
In the country, according to recent advices,
.which state Mi at a large block was sold last
week at -STi cents. Reporting on the for
eign outlook, the Boston Commercial Bulle
tin says:
"Abroad the situation is somewhat im
proved, according to latest accounts, yarn
spinners appear to be better situated at the
moment and there is more of a tendency to
'buy the raw material, especially for average
Turkey and Cape firsts, which have been
hitherto more or lets neglected.
- "Constantinople advices report larger in
quiry for stocks still left in that center and
some business being accomplished at full
recent quotations. Holders of hair at Con
stantinople are very firm in their ideas of
vaiue and refuse to make even fractional
concessions. However, their attitudo may
change a bit with the advent of the new
-season. "-although stocks to be carried over
will not be heavy. No news of moment is
received from the Cape
MILLS ARK BUYING I-KS8 WOOL
Transfers of Old Clip Decrease as Price
Advances.
Sales of spot wool in Boston are decreas
ing, according to advices received yesterday.
Buyers ere holding back, because or higher
prices asked.
Not only have manufacturers been affected
in their buying by the price advances re
cently, but less reselling of foreign wool to
dealers is now seeen. The strength in Lon
don finds further reflection in the Ameri
can market, both In domestic and foreign
wools. Consequently the scoured basis of
territory wool has advanced a number of
points in the past fortnight, though this
can only be figured nominally because of
the scarcity of good supplies. -Fine staple
is quoted on the scoured basis of S? to 68
cents; half-blood staple. 53 to 55 cents;
- three-eighths-blood staple, 43 to 50 cents;
-ejuarter-blood staple, 43 to 45 cents; cloth
ing, choice fine, 53 to 53 cents, and aver
age fine and fine medium, 48 to 51 cents.
BUTTER SCrPLX - IS NOT LARGE
Market Holding Firm, but Change Is Not
s Far Distant.
Butter is holding; firm and city creamery
stocks are light. S3 the active local and
shipping demand keeps the market cleaned
up. Present conditions are not likely to
last long, as the weather is favorable to
an Increase in cream production.
The egg market was steady at the old
prices. Storing Is active and quotations are
-not likely to change soon.
There was a good demand for poultry of
all kinds, especially chickens. The best
bens sold at IS cents and broilers of good
size readily brought SO cents.
Dressed meats were unchanged in price.
Pork was steady. Veal sales dragged.
&TKAMER ORANGES IN' GOOD DEMAND
Los Angeles Berries Due Thin Morning.
Telephone Peas In Market.
About 11 cars of oranges were unloaded
from the steamer yesterday. There was a
sood market on the street and prices were
firm. A car of Florida grape fruit was re
ceived. The first shipment of Los Angeles straw
berries will arrive by express this morning.
The initial lot will consist of only a few
pony refrigerators. Car lot shipments should
be on hand by the latter part of next week.
The first Telephone peas were received
from the South and sold at 12 cents.
Early varieties brought S(&9 cents. As
paragus was firm at ?a a box for white
and .50 for green. California rhubarb
offered at ?2 a box and local at 6 cents a
pound.
California Hop Contracts Firm.
Much bearish talk is heard In the hop
market these days and this Is usually an
indication that the dealers want to buy.
Many of them are working on limits which
will not permit them to pay the top prices
lately paid, but the market has been es
tablished at the IR-cent level, and efforts
to buy under this figure are not successful,
except w here the usual discount la made
for lower quality.
A firmer contract market exists in Cali
fornia, where the Goldridge Development
Company yesterday sold 300 bales of 1311
Sonomas at 13 U cents.

Stubborn Resistance Shown to Un
favorable Developments of Daj.
Lehigli Valley Strong in F;tce
of Anti-Trust Suit.
XEW YORK, March 1. Soeculatlon ap
proached a deadlock today among the stocks
whose movements usually determine tne
character of the market. The leading shares
showed no improvement, vibrating through
out the session, and the must that could be
said was that there was a consistently good
undertone.
Amomr the sneeialtles fluctuations were
wider. The Tobacco stocks. Fertilizer and
Oil shares advanced sharply, but the move
ment .was by no means uniform. Express
stocks and some of lower priced railroad
shares were weak.
The influences of the day for the most
part were of unfavorable nature and the
resistance of the list to their force sup
ported opinion that the market had reached
a sold-out condition. Piling of the anti
trust suit a-rainst Lehigh Valley after the
close yesterday was without effect on the
anthracite group. Lehigh Valley, in fact,
was strongest o'f the active stocks. The
Government's action apparently had been
discounted in the late decline yesterday.
Liquidation in Rock Island was resumed,
and new low prices were made for tho col
lateral bonds and both issues of stock. In
dustrials were indifferent to depressing re
ports from the trade.
In the bond market movements were ir
regular. Rock Island collaterals recovered
after reaching 87. Selling of these bonds
was due to fears of a default in the May
interest payment, the usual March dividend
not having ben declared thus far on tbe
stock underlying these bonds. Total sales
of bonds. $2.7iO.on. rnited States is de

The Willamette Valley Southern Railway Company is constructing a high-grade
standard interurban railway from Oregon City to Mount Angel, a distance of 32
miles, connecting at Oregon City with the Portland Railway, Light & Power Com
pany system, giving a through line from Portland to Mount Angel.
The Willamette Valley Southern Railway Company is controlled by and will be
operated under supervision of the Fortland Railway, Light & Power Company. This
new line taps a very rich section of the Willamette Valley and will unquestionably
develop through future extensions into one of the' most important interurban sys
tems radiating out of Portland.
We consider these bonds an eminently attractive investment, secured by direct

established public service corporations of the . Pacific Northwest and representing
65 only of the actual reproduction value of the property mortgaged. .
